Subject: The Internet Gone Wild?

I'm sure all you have heard about the American Idol contestant who has her pictures posted all over the internet. Is it a hoax? Photoshop is a very powerful tool. They may or not be real but are sure to destroy a reputation.

Last week, I put a story about a 13yr old who got assaulted by a man she met on the internet.

I've also read about malicious kids cyber-bullying their classmates.

You can destroy a company's reputation by posting a bad review.

But what do you do? Do you regulate the internet? You can't do that because the spam / porn /destructive sites will just go off shore.

Also there is the freedom of speech issue and if you try to restrict it, it's a very slippery slope. Then who decides what is acceptable or not?

It's already against the law to be a pedophile and the 13 yr old's parents have a responsibility to restrict their daughter's internet usage.

But what about the AI girl? Did she pose for her boyfriend privately and he decide to put them online? The irony here is that she isn't a good singer but if they keep her on the show, many are likely to vote for her just because they've seen her on the internet.

It's a mess but I don't see an acceptable solution. I don't want the internet regulated. Maybe they need to be able to prosecute someone like this girl's boyfriend for putting those private pictures up there. Can she sue him? Is there a precedent for this?

What do y'all think?

[> Hi, I have not all answers but if she posed for him privately he can't put the picture by internet without her writing permission. If he did it she could sue him asking the judge 2 things delete the pictures and condemm the boy friend to pay her. -- GRa, 12:45:19 02/27/07 Tue [1]

[> [> I don't know if he can or not. I'm not sure about the legalities since she is a public figure. Did Paris Hilton's bf get into trouble for posting her pics? -- judi, 12:52:53 02/28/07 Wed [1]

[> Where have I been? I haven't heard anything about the AI contestant. This is a difficult issue--there's a lot to consider. One thing I can say is that there is a lot of filtering software out there--surely some of it works decently. And I think parent's should not let their kids freely surf the net. Most parents wouldn't let their kids wander the streets in a bad part of town at night, would they? The Internet can be just as dangerous if you're not careful. -- JAG Junkie (Ronda), 17:17:19 02/27/07 Tue [1]

[> I think the rules for the internet should be the same as the rules for any other media. There is legal action that can be taken if someone sells or gives a nude picture of another person to a magazine for publication, without permission. The laws for the internet should be the same. The way to regulate it, is to transfer the laws that govern other publications to the internet as well. Things that are already illegal should be enforced regardless of the venue. Child porn, stalking, slander, etc. All of it should carry the same reprocussions. -- Theresa, 18:12:47 02/27/07 Tue [1]

[> [> If the pics are real, it doesn't fall into any of those categories. She posed for them and trusted her bf not to distribute them. Now, the fake sex ones are a different story. No word from AI yet on her fate. She is not a good singer but this will get her votes. -- judi, 12:56:48 02/28/07 Wed [1]

[> [> [> If they are real and she didn't give permission for them to be published the laws apply. You bet she would have a case if she pursued it and it was a normal paper publication. Now tabloids get away with things like that more often because famous people see it as a waste of time to try to sue them, when it's all just lies. But even if a tabloid crosses the line, they can be sued and fined millions for releasing private pictures without consent. -- Theresa, 09:27:01 03/07/07 Wed [1]

[> Long before the internet, anyone with an ounce of sense didn't engage in scuzzy or private behaviour in front of any kind of camera. (inside). -- Cece, 18:14:30 02/28/07 Wed [1]

I don't think the internet can be easily regulated. www stands for WORLD wide net. There may be international laws which govern internet providers, but I don't imagine there would be any teeth in those laws.

As for law suits, my b.i.l. was sued for writing something bad about an executive of a public company. I don't know the details as I don't speak to my b.i.l. anymore. I believe he was on some kind of blog or message board on Yahoo. I believe he tried to write a public apology, but it didn't work.

The long and short of it is, treat the internet as if you were standing on a stage in front of television cameras. And whatever you do, don't let anyone photograph or film you engaging in sex acts, not even your husband.

Why are there always so many video tapes of people having sex? Why would you film it? I guess some people get turned on by watching themselves having sex, but I personally think that's a little weird. When DH and I are getting romantic, the LAST thing I'm thinking about turning on is a camera! LOL

[> [> You're right, Cece. Fraud, hoaxes and scams have been around as long as there's been oral communication! The 'net just makes it easier & faster. As for cameras, there's even an old adage about never allow yourself to be photographed holding a drink. You never know how it will come back to haunt you! -- The Chief, 07:00:29 03/05/07 Mon [1]
