Subject: I knew this would happen sooner or later

Music industry is suing Limewire

For those of you not familiar with Limewire, it's a site that allows you to download music for free. It's a P2P (peer to peer) site which loosely means you are sharing files with other users. It's like you let a friend borrow your cd and put it on their computer. However, sites like Limewire takes it on a much larger scale and just about everything is up there.

At what point does it go from file sharing to outright piracy? I guess that will be determined in court.

Any thoughts on this?

[> I don't use Limewire, but I *did* use Napster A LOT back before all these lawsuits and anti-piracy campaigns started. Inside -- JAG Junkie (Ronda), 19:31:39 03/27/07 Tue [1]

I won't tell you how much time I spent on Napster way back several years ago. I used it because I was looking for Christian pop and Christian rock from the 70s, most of which is out of print. Some of that stuff was rereleased onto CD, then went out of print again. But a lot of awesome treasures never made it onto CD. I searched for months for some songs and I was finally able to get them when the ONE person who had those songs was actually on Napster at the same time I was. Alas, some stuff I never found. sniff, sniff!

My point (and yes I have one) is that I was getting stuff that was not available for purchase. Believe me, if I could go out and buy that stuff, I'd be there paying top dollar. But I don't have that option in most cases. Some of the stuff I got from Napster has since been remastered onto CD and I *have* actually gone out and bought the CDs (at a premium price) despite the fact that I have downloaded versions on my computer. For one thing, when you have the actual CD, you get all the liner notes and pictures. And being the music junkie that I am, I actually read the liner notes--I want to know where it was recorded, who the studio musicians were, who sang BGVs, etc.

I tried Limewire briefly a year or two ago when I was looking for two new Christian songs that I actually liked (gasp!) I didn't want to buy the whole albums, so I looked for a place to buy just the two songs online, but everywhere I checked, it said that those songs were not available for online purchase. DH suggested Limewire and I looked for several days, but never found them. I eventually gave up. Then my computer crashed and I never bothered to reinstall Limewire because I hadn't had much success with it. (But I probably didn't give it enough time). Incidentally, I did find one of the CDs at a used CD store and spent $10 for it--all for one song--hated the rest of the songs. I never did find the other.

I have been tempted to download Limewire again and start searching for oldies again, but I know from past experience with Napster that it will completely suck my time, and I don't have a lot of that right now, unfortunately.

It saddens me to think that Limewire may end up with the same fate that the old Napster did. I feel like a valuable potential resource is being taken away with no alternatives. And it makes me regret that I didn't get involved with Limewire sooner. Because those old songs are just going to get more and more rare.

[> [> I should add that some of the songs I was downloading were songs that I already had on vinyl. I had already bought those songs! I just wanted copies on my computer so I could keep my precious records from getting scratched. -- JJ (Ronda)--yes, I still have a turntable. And I won't mention the 8-track player..., 19:39:16 03/27/07 Tue [1]

[> [> [> okay - I can honestly say - I never had an 8 track tape- lol - but yes I like you still have a turn table and I know my daughter downloads songs all the time, but I don't know what she uses. I'm thinking it's something that starts with a k though... hmmm -- chris k, 06:14:59 03/28/07 Wed [1]

[> I suppose this must somehow affect music profits - but - when I was a kid you could go out and by a 45 of your favorite song- now you have no choice (that I know of) but to buy a $15 CD of the whole album - I suspect things like limewire is the 'mother of invention' that modern technology has come up with to replace the old single song 45 -- chris k, 06:16:45 03/28/07 Wed [1]

[> [> You can spend a buck and buy your favorite song off itunes, or the new napster etc. You can buy individual songs for about the price of a Taco Bell Burrito. -- Theresa, 11:22:22 03/28/07 Wed [1]

[> [> [> [> [> Usually, yes. But recently there was a new song on the radio, & I wanted that one song but not the whole album. But when I went online to buy the song, only *some* of the songs on the album were available to be purchased for download. The song I wanted, however, had a nice little disclaimer next to it saying it could not be purchased online. Maybe this is a rare occurance, but I was pretty miffed about it. -- JJ (Ronda)--hopefully that experience is not the norm!, 19:03:38 03/28/07 Wed [1]

[> [> [> [> [> [> What do ya know? I just checked online, and that song is finally available for purchase, TWO years later. I wonder what they're reasoning was for holding it so long. Maybe they were hoping that people would give up and buy the whole album. shrug. -- JJ (Ronda), 19:11:49 03/28/07 Wed [1]

[> [> [> [> [> [> [> I wonder if contacting the record company in an instance like that would help, BUT, here's why I'm guessing that song was unavailable... did it have a "guest artist" on it? Someone who "appears courtesy of XYZ Records"?? Maybe XYZ's lawyers were negotiating for a cut of sales and there was a disagreement.... I could see it happening. -- The Chief, 17:18:31 03/29/07 Thu [1]

[> [> [> [> [> [> [> [> Funny thing is, only 5 of the 11 songs on the album are available for download on iTunes and the RealPlayer music store. Only Walmart.com has all 11 songs available for purchase individually, and that was not the case a year or so ago. You may be on to something. This particular album is all guest artists, so to speak. It's a praise and worship album by various people, but they are all virtually unknowns. Shrug. -- JJ (Ronda)--sorry for hijacking the thread with all my ranting. LOL, 19:55:22 03/29/07 Thu [1]
