CHRISTIAN CAMP FACES HUMAN RIGHTS COMPLAINT

A Mennonite Brethren camp in Manitoba will soon be the target of a human rights complaint because it refuses to rent its facilities to groups that promote homosexuality, the Winnipeg Free Press reported Thursday.

A Winnipeg-based homosexual choir, the Rainbow Harmony Project, says it will file its complaint against Camp Arnes, located north of Gimli on Lake Winnipeg, with the Manitoba Human Rights Commission in a few days. Choir spokeswoman Brenda Froese alleges that when they tried to rent the facility for a winter weekend retreat, they were turned down because the choir does not fit the camp's criteria for prospective guests. According to the Free Press, a camp policy states: "While on the Camp Arnes site, campers, guests and visitors shall refrain from . . . engaging in or promoting/supporting homosexual activity or organizations." The Rainbow Harmony Project - which reportedly "sings songs celebrating gay relationships and struggles for equality" - will argue they were discriminated against on the basis of sexual orientation.

In a news release, Manitoba Canadian Alliance MP Vic Toews called on the provincial government to immediately clarify the Manitoba Human Rights Act "to ensure that Canadians' rights to freedom of religion and expression are protected." Toews added that this case underscores the danger religious organizations face from New Democrat MP Svend Robinson's "hate-crimes" legislation, Bill C-250[*5] (formerly Bill C-415). If passed into law, Toews warned, it "will interfere with the right of religious leaders and institutions to communicate and adhere to essential matters of faith." That bill is now before the Commons Justice Committee.
