Subject: A view of Iraq, war, the UN, resolutions, etc., from Kuwait

\nSaddam's regime has always threatened us: Kuwaiti Ambassador Pramit Pal Chaudhuri

\n
\nHow is Kuwait reacting to the start of the war?
\n
\nWe've always said we are against the war. We are not going to fight. But we will certainly defend our country. Since 1991, the international community has been trying to disarm Iraq. Saddam Hussein's regime has made no attempt to build real trust between itself and its neighbours, especially Kuwait. We do not trust Hussein's regime. We have always been under threat from it. No one, no country can stop this war. We only hope that it will be short. We are only against this regime. We are sure the region will be safer, more secure if Hussein's regime is removed.
\n
\nIs Kuwait concerned about the lack of a second UN resolution?
\n
\nWe would have preferred a second resolution. Kuwait was, after all, liberated through United Nations resolutions. But that the war has started without a second resolution is not our mistake or our concern. Kuwait is not a Security Council member. That is the concern of certain permanent members who threatened to use their vetoes.
\n
\nWhat do you feel Saddam Hussein should do?
\n
\nIt is probably too late for him to do much. But even now he can leave the country or resign. I don't think he will do either.
\n
\nDo you think that the US-led invasion will lead to an upsurge in Arab terrorism?
\n
\nI hope not. I don't think so. The US army will be liberating the people of Iraq. I am certain that the people of Iraq will be happy. In 1991, the US army was only 90 km from Baghdad. But not one Iraqi took up arms against US troops. Instead, the Iraqis took up arms against their ruler.
\n
\nWhat do you think of India's position on the war?
\n
\nIndia and Kuwait have more or less the same position on the war. We were both for UN Security Council resolutions to disarm Iraq. We both want to finish this through peaceful means and feel that more attention should be given to the Security Council. In the end, both countries are praying that this war will be finished with few casualties. Our friends in India will understand our position: how Kuwait has had to live in fear of Saddam Hussein all these years. In the near future, we expect to open an embassy in Iraq and turn things around.
