  I noticed that some dancers moved back to prelim this year even though they placed at nationals last year, and also some of those kids that placed in the younger age groups were only novices until the last competition? Novice to open seems a big jump even though they DID deserve to place at nationals!

  • Movement back to prelim after nationals is at teachers descretion and is always advised to the other teachers at meetings and discussed if best for that dancer. Don't forget the u7's & 8's did the soft jig at nationals this year. (NT) -- LD, 22:51:11 10/06/08 Mon

  • Schools do seem to stick together but I have also found everyone fairly friendly. Sometimes you have to make the effort. I have people I always chat to from different schools and the kids get on well with all the dancers in their age group. New beginners are ALL GOOD keep them coming BUT they take a while to get up to Nationals level and if we want nationals to keep going and to still have scholarships etc we need to also retain the ones already at that level.   • Oh yes I'd say they have dropped...being an ex Irish dancer it comes as no surprise to me that the nationals are getting smaller and smaller. The main reason for most people leaving is the cost hands down. Solo dresses are getting crazy and fees, shoes, wigs-the cost for Irish dancing per year could no doubt pay a year and half of university tuition fees!   Fesh: An Irish Dance Competition. (Note: “Feis” is an acceptable alternative spelling in less refined regions)
  
  Four Inches: A unit of measurement used by dressmakers to conform to skirt length requirements of dance dresses. Typically varies between four to twelve inches.
  
  Growth Spurt: A rapid increase in the rate of growth during adolescence that occurs immediately after mailing out final payment for a new solo dress.
  
  Irish Points: Scoring system used in championship competitions. Nobody knows exactly how it works and dancers generally accept the results without “quibbling” (the ultimate act of faith for Irish Dancers).
  
  MAID: Mother Addicted to Irish Dance – A woman who voluntarily chooses to leave mainstream society renouncing all worldly pursuits in order to devote her life to contemplation of her daughter’s next solo dress.
  
  Oireachtas: A large regional Irish Dance Competition which occurs the weekend before the arrival of your daughter’s new solo dress.
  
  Podium: (< Latin: elevated place, balcony < Greek “pódion”: little foot) One small step for a man, one giant shrieking, sobbing, grinning, crying, happy leap for an Irish Dancer.
  
  Sock Glue: Definitive proof of the absurdity of Irish Dance. A type of roll-on glue used to affix garments on a dancer. The use of sock glue became very popular in the late 1990’s following the ban on surgical fasteners and staple guns.
  
  Solo Dress: A particularly ornate dance outfit worn by girls competing in upper competition levels. Purchasing a solo dress should not be attempted until you are at least a 3rd degree Feis Mom as the process requires advanced knowledge of financing, fabric care, international monetary rates, dressmaker negotiating skills, international customs law, airline carry-on baggage limitations, and odor removal techniques.
  
  Spike Curls: “Wig in a bag” kit for do-it-yourselfers typically applied in a ratio of 25 spike curls per glass of wine.
  
  Whilst In Motion: A designated competition period created by An Coimisiún le Rincí Gaelacha during which parents may take illegal photographs of their children.

Pre-ordered merchandise will be given out with competitors numbers and IDs where possible, and we have plenty of people to help give these and the 3-day passes out and sell day-passes first thing on Thursday to make sure you don't have to wait too long.   I need a dress to fit a dancer with a bust of about 36 and a waist of 32, 5'3" tall. (I'm ok with a smaller dress as long as there's enough let out.) I need the bodice to be no shorter than the skirt (no high waists please) and the dress to be suitable for a prelim dancer.
  
  My budget is $1500 NZD and I'd need the dress by mid to late October.

  • When I used to compete (and was doing my first year of a forensic chemistry dgeree) I used to make an effort to get up 30 mins earlier every day to fit in some practise, and I used to use the ads of the tv programmes I watched to do exercises, and I also made a day planner to try to fit in an extra couple of hours a week.... the day planner was really helpful!   When I was 10-11 dancing in the ChCh Competitions i was on stage by myself and had just finished my dance- waiting for the Judge to ring the bell(think it was Jill Croft) and I suddenly fainted...
  Now today this would have caused great pandemonium then as i lay there with my Kilt up around my chest the stage crew were a little uncertainn as to what to do. Some bright person decided to drop the curtain- which was great except that the curtain dropped on top of me with my legs still sticking out- imagine the scene as a set of legs were unceremoniusly pulled under the Curtain

Seems their routine wasn't on tv, which is a bummer as we really wanted to expose Irish dancing as much as possible. It was a great experience for them. They got great comments from the judges.   At a time when Dancing in NZ has reached a crucial point- I would like to offer unreservedly my support to the Organising commitee for the National Championships this year.
  It can be an onerous task but these people do this out of a love for Irish dancing.I think it is time we start showing these people some respect- put aside attitudes and axes to grind
  If you have a constructive criticism to offer and you feel so strongly Put your name beside it - your real name!
  I would ask that we all stop the wining and moaning - its 2 weeks to the biggest event of our calendar - a successful event is about participants wanting it to be successful as well

  Know most focus on exciting nationals at moment. But wonder about Feis over Labour weekend. Early in year almost die for comp, and many NZers cross the Tasman in June for Gold Coast, MacAleer, Solstice comps. Anyone else think it would be nice if Feis was held on say Queens Birthday weekend instead?

  • The feis is run by the Irish Society and is not just Irish dancing so might take a bit of effort to change. The Feis at Labour weekend has been like that for a long time.
