Was back to Saskatoon this weekend checking up on the FIL. Stopped at the U of S to get an update on their view of election.

In October, I was surprised by the high expectations amongst the University crowd(professional staff and profs) for SP. Couldn't put my finger on why their projections were so much higher than my expectations. But in 1982, I had no inkling that Grant Devine was going to sweep the cities. Only later after talking to friends who I had every reason to believe were solid NDP did they explain how important Grants promise to provide Mortgage assistance was to the homeowner.

After two polls, and what I consider to be a rather mediocre Sp campaign, I was thunderstruck when the analysis was as high or higher than two wks earlier.

Response I got was that personally for them, the "grow business" theme was the key item to make them believe the SP was a serious contender. But the reason they were certain of the SP solid majority was from their students. According to them, the students are solidly Sp. The issue of staying in Sask to work has caught the students psyche and has become one of those once in a generation issues that unite all age groups. Supposedly, this issue is broader than the University and has also caught fire amongst Kelsey and even high school students and their parents.

Anyway, for what it is worth, the Saskatoon Boffins bar table consensus group projection is for eight SP seats in Saskatoon.

My feeling, what have they been sniffing? Or is this Deja-vu all over again. Has the Saskatchewan family of Crown corporations been the death knell of another NDP administration? Will another giant killer take Riversdale? Has the lack of jobs that we have suffered in rural Sask for the past 12 years spread across the Province enough to become the lightning rod that will destroy the NDP plutocrats in the cities?

But I agree with you, Malcolm. The Sp victory will be in spite of the SP campaign. In fact, it will be totally because the NDP screwed up even more.

Makes one really optimistic, doesn't it.
