Alexis-

You know I think that these old shows had a lot of wholesome family values and were a lot of laughs. We have several of the Avonlea movies on tape. You know I was thinking of other old favorites like Abbot & Costello, Laurel & Hardey, Roy Rogers & Dale Evans, Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers, The "Road Movies" with Bing Crosby & Bob Hope. All of these have their own charm and my kids actually love older movies- sometimes. They did not like an old SMURFS episode that we got for them once. I think they really thought it was dumb. Their Grandma buys them a lot of the older movies. They loved National Velvet with Elizabeth Taylor, Mickey Rooney, and Angela Lansbury. Then there are also all of the musicals: Showboat, Meet Me in St. Louis, The Technicolor Dreamcoat, Brigadoon, etc. These can be a great way to expose them to Broadway and a different genre of entertainment. We have a family/movie night once a week and we get pizza and watch a movie together. They really look forward to it. Another idea is that you could make your own drive-in. Get a projector of some sort and all of you pile in the car or back of the truck. Then show the movie on the garage door or on a white sheet suspended on a rope or pole. You could make the kitchen the concession stand and serve that style of food. Or the Living room could be turned into a theatre and you could have the kids make tickets. Then call up the extended clan and have them over for movie night. It could be a pitch-in; or you could serve finger foods. I think that you can even rent the same type of popcorn poppers that they have in the real theatres!
There are so many resources. Another idea I had was to go to the library and get a film about a certain country. Then you could have a theme night based on that country. Have food from that country- if they eat on the floor or at short tables- you could do that. You could sing children's songs, have key phrases in that language for them to learn, dress up in their native dress- if possible. This may take some improvising or a trip to a local costume shop. You could watch a kid geared movie based in that country. For instance: I think that the Aristocats is based in France. You could have books in that language- so they can see the written language. Also you could have books at all their reading levels about that country. You could have music from that country- like bagpipe music from Scotland. You could play games that are common to their country. You could have the kids do small reports about the country and present them that evening. You could decorate the living room like that country, for instance; You could get a lot of plants and stuffed animals if you are doing Ecuador's rain forest. You could use a blue sheet and blue balloons to represent water. You could hang blue streamers from the ceiling to be a water fall and green streamers to be vines. You could use boxes to create a Aztec village- cover it in gold spray paint or paper and it could be the lost city of Gold. There are so many ideas. You could give them a treasure map with all kinds of clues and then have brownies or something as the treasure. The kids will remember that stuff forever! Have fun!
