I absolutely agree. Just remembering how upset John Boy got when John was just thinking about selling the mountain in season 2 is enough to convince me that John Boy wouldn't do it. I find this episode hard to watch.

However, one aspect of this episode that does seem to be in step with the character of John Boy is the fact that he was impetuous and didn't always think before he acted. Examples of this include the time they bought Five foot shelf of books and the whole vanity press incedent.
