I think it's because they realized Curt was all wrong for Mary Ellen, but by that time, David had moved on to ABC to Days of Our Lives and it ruined everything. IF MARY ELLEN HAD MARRIED DAVID...ahem...things would have ended much happier. I am sure of it. :)
