I live a few hours from the beach (3) and a few hours from the mountains! If I go one way, I'd eventually find the ocean, go the other way, and find the mountains. Very nice! VA has a lot to offer, in my opinion, for vacations since you do have both mountains and ocean, and you also have DC which is interesting to visit too. VA can be HOT in the summer though. HOT and humid.
