Hi, I just saw your post on my board about learning how to sell Mary Kay cosmetics. I can help you with your questions.
The minimum start up cost is $100 for your starter kit. You would also have to add in sales tax & shipping (depending upon where you are located.) Shipping would be about $8. Sales tax probably about 8.25%.
In your starter kit you get $267+ worth of free full size retail products in addition to lots of great samples, forms, catalogs, tapes, carrying case, day planner & etc. so it's well worth the $100 investment.
After that what you spend is up to you. There is enough material in your starter kit to do approximately 30 faces so you can technically work from the samples & take orders if you want to. That is the cheapest way but it's a little harder to sell that way than if the customer gets to take the product home with them. But it's probably the best way to start if you are on a tight budget.
Other possible expenses are that you can purchase a Mary Kay web site for 1 year for only $25 first year ($50 additional years). You can take on-line credit card orders on the web site 24 hours a day, 7 days a week & the company can even refer people to your web site.
Another offer is that for $10 you can list 30 preferred customers & they will send them catalogs for you & you also get 30 business cards free.
That is all the start-up stuff.
When you place your first order you want to be sure that it is for at least $200 wholesale ($400 retail) in actual user products (not sales materials as they don't count in that equation.) Because once you have placed $200 in wholesale orders ($400 retail) that order & all orders for that month & the two months following you get at 50% off so that is when you start earning your 50% commission on everything you sell.
You can earn 100% commission if you sell some of the things in your starter kit & maybe use that money to get the $200 in wholesale to get your inventory going, etc.
In order to keep getting 50% off all products you do have to have $200 wholesale per quarter ($400 retail). But that isn't really hard to do. Even if you think about the stuff you use yourself (and when you sell the products it's kind of important that you actually use the products so you can give an honest testemonial & so people can see that you believe in them & know how to use them & trust them yourself & all that)...well I know that between myself, my husband, my 2 daughters & gifts I could probably spend $200 per quarter just on that if I wanted to but I am fairly new to it & I've had several hundred in sales already.
It's also a great way to invest a tax refund if you think about it. Starting your own business & all that. You get terrific tax write-offs in this business so you can pretty much always count on a refund if you keep track of expenses.
Some of the best things about selling Mary Kay are these. (From my personal experience).
1) It sort of forces you to take better care of yourself...take care of your skin, do your make-up better, dress a little nicer & etc. This is tough at first but then it makes you feel better about yourself & then you want to keep improving & do your hair & nails & lose weight & you just keep feeling better & better about yourself. Your husband or boyfriend will love this too. Even my kids noticed & appreciated the change!
2) You meet a lot of great women & make some great friends in the business by attending meetings. Anywhere in the USA there are meetings that you can attend. If you signed up under me as a consultant you would still have the opportunity to be trained and work with a leader in your area through the "adoptee" program Mary Kay has. The women in the meetings are always very positive, upbeat, movers & shakers...women you want to be like because they are happy and excited & look & feel great & are making their dreams come true.
3) You get to feel like you are helping other women feel good about themselves. Every time you teach a woman skin care or make-up and see how she feels prettier & happier about herself you feel a positive sense of having been a part of that experience.
4) The products are superlative, the company is awesome, they treat employees fantatically, the customer service is top notch, they have 100% satisfaction guarantee on everything & the reputation of the company cannot be matched. I'd say this is the best company in the USA for a woman to work for in my opinion.
5) Company values - this company is founded on the principle of God First, Family Second, Career Third. The company encourages you to make your family a priority (unlike most in corporate America).
6) Ability to work at home & set your own hours. It's really a dream job in that sense. Especially if you have children or just have a phobia about living your life in a gray cubicle. You have the freedom to choose when & where you work & with whom.
7) If for any reason you decide to get out of the business the company will buy back from you any unused merchandise that is less than 1 year old (excluding the starter kit) at 90 cents on the dollar. If you do this you can never be a consultant again so this almost never happens because most women want to keep that option open even if they temporarily quit selling for awhile due to personal reasons...most want to be able to start up later again. But worst case scenario - you get 90% of what you paid back. And the stuff in the starter kit you could always use yourself or give as gifts or sell to other consultants at a discount or whatever. So you really can't LOSE a lot of money at it unless you choose to.
8) Rewards - okay - who doesn't want to drive a brand new car for free? AND work for the company that pays the most women the highest amount of money in the USA? And it's nice to get appreciated for everything you do...there are always little & big rewards coming to you along the way & different forms of recognition & appreciation. You can make a lot of money & win vacations, fur coats, diamond rings & etc. That doesn't suck. :)
9) Achivement - no glass ceilings...no competing to be more manly than the men. You can achieve what you decide you want to achieve & take satisfaction in what you accomplish.
10) You can be feminine, a girly-girl, and still be a successful business woman. You don't have to dress like a man, talk like a man, act like a man and nobody frowns at you for taking time off to take care of a sick child.
There is so much more I could add but I wouldn't know where to begin. Please feel free to contact me for more info anytime!

Last Year I'd paid the full amount for your Pageant for my daughter. A few weeks before the Pageant you had cancelled, due to health reasons. You had promised a full refund and to this date you will not refund, respond to my numerous phone call, letter, or messages via E-mail.
Please contact me to clear up this matter. You claim that you sell MK you are making good money etc. Please return my daughters photo and money.
Respectfully,
A disappointed Pageant mom

Re: Begin Selling -- Toni (Be careful be very very careful), 03:31:53 04/05/08 Sat [1]
Wow!! I would very much like to tell you the truth about Mary Kay and how to start up successfully.
First, you must purchase a starter kit and the cost is $100 plus tax. Between the full size products, samples and bags the consultant has approximately worth $437 worth of items.
Now, please pay close attention. DO NOT ORDER HIGH VOLUMES OF INVENTORY. IT IS NOT NECESSARY. I always suggest if consultants want more than $200 wholesale / $400 retail, do not start any higher than $600 wholesale / $1200 retail and do not place another order until this product is close to be sold out. DO NOT ALLOW ANYONE TO TALK YOU INTO FRONT LOADING OR MONTHLY ORDERING SO THEY CAN REACH THEIR OWN PERSONAL GOALS. It is necessary for recruiters to go and sell products and share the opportunity.
I highly suggest that if you are going to put this product in a gift store, beware, you will get reported to the company left and right; however, we are now in the 21st century and I for one do not see anything wrong with it. It beats the other alternatives that your recruiter will tell you to do..warm chattering, book family and friends who eventually will want nothing to do with you. So again, I say, go for it and set up a display and if a mary kay consultants complains, oh well, tell them to go to flea markets the products are all over the place.
I would suggest to you to just sell and leave recruiting alone unless someone approaches you. You will understand this statement once you go to a few rah rah meetings. Remember selling you honestly get 40% profit, because you will need 50% to repurchase product and 10% for tax (no one will tell you this). Please do not run this business with your own personal funds after your initial purchase of the start up kit and your initial order. I promise you if you do, you will go into debt. Be a wise business women no matter what avenue of business you choose; do not get caught up in the glamour or excitement of this business or any other. I wish you luck and if you want more info, please feel free to contact me. Oh yes, one other thing, the majority of women in Mary Kay are lucky if they make $10,000/year...keep your eyes and heart wide open. Good luck.
Toni

Be advised that Mary Kay products are not vegetarian. They contain brain and spinal fluid.
You have to inform everyone you sell to that they contain animal products or you can leave yourself open to law suits similar to the one I am going through now.
You also have to take in consideration what the FDA states on this.

While visiting London, don't forget these popular attractions. If you have always
dreamed of visiting London and seeing the sights, you may have wondering what
to do when you get there. There is so much to see and do in London when visiting
that to see everything could take months. What if you only have a couple of
weeks? Finding the tourist attractions that fit your agenda can be simplified
by using this list of some of the top hot spots for tourists visiting London.
Obviously, there is much more to London
than what is listed here. These are just the essentials to touring one of the
oldest cities in the world. Top Museums To See While Visiting London
First on our list is the National Gallery. It houses one of the greatest collections
of European paintings. If you are familiar with Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt
or Van Gogh, this museum houses those collections and several others from famous
artists. There are literally thousands of exhibits to see and it could take
days to see it all. Special guided tours and holiday events make visiting extra
fun. To get there, just ask to visit Trafalgar Square and walk from there. This
museum is often considered the number one place to see while visiting London.
Another great spot is the Natural History Museum. Kids dig the dinosaur exhibits.
Not to be missed is the earthquake simulator and an elephant bird egg. This
museum is interactive, educational and rewarding for anyone with a curious mind.
Located on Cromwell Road, this museum is great for families.
London isn't just a great place
to visit the hundreds of museums; you can also take a peek at some of its most
favorite landmarks. London is well
known for its palaces and other historical buildings that allow visiting and
tours. One of the most highly visited buildings in the London
area is Buckingham Palace. It gives you the opportunity to see the Royal Throne
Room, Ballroom and more on it's tour. Don't forget the world famous changing
of the guards. Also, the Palace gardens are exquisite for anyone who likes to
see a little green. You won't want to forget your camera.
The Tower of London, a highly recommended place for anyone visiting the city,
offers tours throughout most of the year. This tower began its life in 1078,
when William the Conqueror first ordered its construction. The tower itself
has been the location of palaces, prisons and even a zoo. Learn of its history
by taking a free guided tour of this most famous tower, home of the Crown Jewels
of England. The Rest Of The Best To See While Visiting London If looking for
an experience you'll never forget, London offers its unique London Dungeon.
This frightening tour offers an image of London in its most deadliest and frightening
times. This fun adventure let's you explore the Great Plague, Jack the Ripper
and more killer fun. For a family vacation, London offers its visitors a fantastic
zoo. The London Zoo offers exotic animals, tiny and strange bugs and loads of
fun for guests of any age. With over 650 animals on display, you won't want
to miss this adventure. Admission also includes exquisite gardens, exceptional
architecture and fine art exhibits. Whatever sort of attractions you crave,
London offers some of the best in the world. When you book a trip, remember
the top picks but also invent your own adventure while visiting London, England.
We run a High-Class escort agency and it’s been a good number of years since
we first launched the London escorts
agency Bond & Mayfair web site. Originally we weren’t based on the
web at all, business has always been booming and all we had to do is rely on
adverts in magazines such as What’s On etc…good advertising is partly
what we needed to do. Times have changed but in fact for the better in many
ways as we are now the most recognised and respected escort agency in the UK.
To have a successful London escorts
agency you need to put in long hours with a lot of determination and dedication.
This is the minimum effort you need to actually stay in business in this industry,
a lot of people will try to bring you down and try to make you look small. They
think they know everything that there is to know but really and truly they don’t
know much at all, these are the ‘Bedroom Boyz’.
Looking at the industry from a distance it is getting much better as more and
more people are beginning to realise that acquiring cheap service from a so
called high-class London escort
agency is not always the right choice. Most of the time they get burnt.
Bond & Mayfair will at all times strive to provide the best value for you
and we constantly keep a perfect blend of old world service at the same time
keeping modern demands and comforts as high priority.
There are many others just likes us that are trying very hard to keep things
nice, clean, friendly and professional but the list is now beginning to grow
endlessly and only the best are being remembered.

Beware if you don't intend on really working the business. I have been a consultant for 2+ years and it definitely has it's ups and downs. The trick is to make it work for you and roll with the changes. You can't give up but you also can't get yourself into credit card debt either. Make sure you are able to sell the product - don't simply stockpile inventory and hope that customers "will come". They won't. It's up to you. If you don't have the determination, don't bother. Been there, doing that.

Re: Unsure about Mary Kay, need some help -- Deb, 21:46:20 04/02/04 Fri [1]
I was a Director for Mary Kay for several years, earned 2 cars and was in the National Court of Sales twice. I resigned last Fall after deciding that working 80 hours a week and never seeing my family wasn't worth a car and a $1500 paycheck. Mary Kay is a racket and is the most dishonest, fake, superficial, sleezy Company I have ever known. They TOTALLY (with much help from the Directors and Sales Force) take advantage of women who are trying to make some extra money. The Consultants lie about their success and exaggerate how much money they make - MOST aren't making a dime and are thousands of dollars in debt from inventory. The 90% buy back guarantee is a lie - there's more to it than just returning your product and getting a check - much more. I made some money (many Directors are broke and I have a friend who had a Cadillac and 2 Director offspring her first year who also resigned last Fall - never looking back, and 2 Director friends that filed bankruptcy) but my Consultants made nothing - even those with 8+ recruits. It's terrible - Mary Kay knows this is going on and they do nothing - they just keep selling selling selling to Consultants while the products sit in their basement and the credit card bills keep coming.
PLEASE don't even CONSIDER joining this terrible Company - you'll regret it for sure.

I am interested in knowing how Directors went bankrupt? I have been a consultant for two years now. I started off as a personal user who wanted to get a discount and not pay full price. In the meantime, my client base has grown to family and a lot of friends. I am by no means rich, but I am not in debt either. I know many Directors and Consultants, not one of them is broke, or going bankrupt. Would these be a situation of poor money management? You don't just go bankrupt in a few weeks. I also firmly believe, whether you work for yourself or for an employer. If you go bankrupt, it's your own fault. And such an easy way to NOT pay the debt back. If I decide to not pay a bill and something gets cut off, I don't blame it on my boss. I put the blame firmly where it would belong-on my shoulders.
I also do not know another Director that worked that many hours in one week-wow! It sounds to me like you're angry that you didn't get your unit to sell. I mean they made nothing? Or did they not make enough for you? If a whole Unit isn't doing that poorly then I would take a good look at their Director and ask, "What's up?" I know that there has to be more to this than that, it sounds like bitterness to me.

Re: Unsure about Mary Kay, need some help -- Kimberly Pugh, 13:49:10 02/20/06 Mon [1]
Hi I sell Mary Kay, and I think it is a great company. Yes you do have your ups and downs just like any other company. This business works when your heart is right, and you work the business. You have to know yourself, and what you can and can't do. I did not have the funds to start my business with nor the credit to get a loan. So I used my friends and family to help me get the inventory I needed. Yes I did have to make money and turn around and reinvest it. But thank God I have no debt. This way also made me a strong consultant. It allowed my team member to see that you really don't have to invest in large orders to make this business work. This way it keeps my team ordering every month because they need the product. This way builds their momentum, and keeps them working. If you invest in a whole lot of product at first it will tend to sit on the shelf, and you won’t move it. But if you continual to build your product you will be more successful.
Read more about this business at my website.
Thanks
