I assume John was careful not to initiate anything and he and Stephan disucssed books, played chess, drank brandy and hunted thus deepening their friendship. It could be that what John perceived as desire from Stephan could have been infatuation stemming from Stephan's realization of his own inclinations. Now that he has to deal with Webber's death on top of his own injury the infatuation may fade with time and the friendship survives that. It happens between men and women also, an initial attraction acknowledging the desirability of the other that fades as the impossibility of a relationship and the reality of the personanlities involved overcomes the attraction. I think you're right. And this is also a parallel to Lord John's relationship with Jamie, which will (eventually) get to a similar state.     - Well, no, that wasn't my point. I think that John and Stephan are both seriously contemplating a relationship. The thing with Percy and Webber has them more frightened than ever to act on their feelings. Remember when Stephan told John about the Prussian king? I think the point of Stephan mentioning THAT was to put John at ease about the ability of people to look the other way. I am STILL hoping both men will get what they want, whatever that might be, in Scottish Prisoner. In my heart I refuse to believe herself could have built this relationship for us between these two AMAZING characters for more than three years and NOT give us some satisfaction.
