Subject: I assume John was careful not to initiate anything and he and Stephan disucssed books, played chess, drank brandy and hunted thus deepening their friendship. It could be that what John perceived as desire from Stephan could have been infatuation stemming from Stephan's realization of his own inclinations. Now that he has to deal with Webber's death on top of his own injury the infatuation may fade with time and the friendship survives that. It happens between men and women also, an initial attraction acknowledging the desirability of the other that fades as the impossibility of a relationship and the reality of the personanlities involved overcomes the attraction. Stephan and John can have high regard and affection without sexual involvement.
