The following quote is taken from Lord John and the Brotherhood of the Blade by Diana Gabaldon, Chapter 32, The Path of Honor. Copyright © 2007 by Diana Gabaldon. All rights reserved.

This is the scene in the stable where LJG speaks with Jamie man-to-man, presents his dilemma, and asks his opinion regarding "the path of honor" in his situation.

Grey stood still, and let the jumbled pieces fall.

"I see," he said slowly, and did. Grey understood now what Fraser meant by honor. In the end, it was simple, and the relief of reaching the decision overwhelmed his realization of the difficulties still to be faced.

"It is honor--but not the honor of my reputation. The end of it," Grey said slowly, seeing it at last, "is that I cannot in honor see him hanged for a crime whose guilt I share--and from whose consequences I am escaped by chance alone."

LJG had approached Jamie with a 'pearl' beginning to form. Their conversation brought things into focus, both as LJG recounted his story and as Jamie gave his opinion. I very much enjoyed their meeting of the minds and the fact that Jamie could so simply and easily get to the heart of the matter and bring to light what LJG had really already known deep down and was beginning to see.

Of course that only makes what happens next so much harder to read.
