  • I agree pamelalass- I think John so easily reels us in because unlike many of his contemporaries, he treats them more as equals. Having been surrounded by independant, intelligent women throughout his life, he respects, admires, and listens to the women in his life. He has affection and admiration for them. John's friendship with Brianna is the thing that just put me over the edge in love with him... *G* He's gallant and charming, yet not afraid to "mix it up" with her, because he appreciates her as a woman of sharp wits and keen intellect, as well as strength of character and personal honor. He just never falls into the trap of treating a woman like a shrinking violet, even when Bree is actually vulnerable and in need of an ally. He is flirtatious in precisely the right amount, and during their faux engagement his devotion to her actually becomes something lovely and genuine.         • Ooh, just seeing this now, and I very much like your connection of his manner with Bree to his role as a husband. I don't know why I hadn't thought of it, but it's entirely possible Isobel's experience was as delightful, or more so, as Bree's. Especially since she might not have had Bree's - - and ours - - modern sensibility about romance, sex, and marriage flowing seamlessly together. It's easy to forget that the emotional, spiritual, and utterly romantic connection between Jamie and Claire would not necessarily have characterized many 18th century marriages, especially among people of the Dunsany's and Grey's social position.
