Subject: Vicki, you are doing such a great job pulling out moments that capture both the grace and charm of John's women, and something more about John himself. I so enjoy what we learn about John through his interactions with the women in his life. >>>

We get to see him through female eyes, as handome, strong, charming, oh-so appealingly military, and yet graceful and witty. And when we look at women through his eyes, the qualities he admires, and the "paradoxes" he notes show him to be amazingly perceptive and intuitive. He doesn't talk down to women; although he has protective urges from time to time, he views women as intellectual, social, political, and strategic equals, and this must have quite a lot to do with Benedicta.

His deeper emotions may not be engaged by relationships with women, but, interestingly for a military man, I get the feeling he welcomes them as friends, comrades, and allies on the "battleground" of London society, and he even shares a unique kind of intimacy with some of his women friends. I'm especially interested in the ways he shares himself with women, and how that functions to make me, as the reader, fall in love with him in spite of knowing he's utterly unavailable - - in addition to being fictional, of course!
