I am investigating my ancestor David Shippee who was born about 1645 in "Maidfield" which is possibly a farm on Prudence Island. Has anyone heard of this farm? If so, please send me any info you may have.
Thank you!

From Prudence Isalnd Historian, Joe Bains:

David Shippee arrived on Prudence Island shortly after William Allen, and like Allen was a tenant of John Paine at the north end of the island in the area near Potters Cove. Actually, the settlement was located along the ridge of land that runs between Potters Cove and the little Pine knoll further north. Wm. Allen arrived on the island about 1660; and Shippee, probably between 1660 and 1664. He was definitely at Prudence by 1664 because in August of that year he married a young woman on the Island, named Margaret Scranton. It was most likely the first wedding on Prudence Island. Margaret was the daughter of Thomas Scranton, who established a farm at the south end of the island around 1660. The Scranton Farm was located about where the large quonset hut is on the way to the T-wharf. The Scrantons named their farm "Maidfield Farm." The farm was known by that name for more than one hundred years. David and Margaret Shippee lived on the Island until about 1680 when they moved to East Greenwich, taking advantage of an opportunity to have a farm and land of their own. There is land evidence on descendants of David Shippee in the East Greenwich town records. In addition, there is genealogical information on David & Margaret Shippee in a book I am writing about land use on Prudence Island.

Just yesterday I found a book on the David Shippee Family geneology at the CT State Library in Hartford, it is in Isle 37B in the Rhode Island section. They also have books listing Marriages, Deaths, Births and a cute little blue book on Deserters and Runaways which listed Nathan and Prudence Shippee. Nathan was a deserter twice and Prudence was a runaway both had rewards of $5.00 a head for thier return.
