He stopped, and just stared at her. When he spoke, his voice came out in a low growl. "Just killing them? You say it because you don't know what it's like... what it's like to spend nearly four years wandering, neither dead nor alive, spirit nor flesh. I wouldn't go to the Beyond, Lairleader, because I couldn't find Dremalithas. I couldn't come back to find him! Four years without my dragon! You couldn't even fathom losing your Kareen for four hours! It's... it's a painful existance, Lairleader, that no rider deserves. There's you, and everything you can see and smell and hear, but not touch, not talk to people you watch as they go on living without you. And there's this emptiness, where your dragon once was, it's a raw, gaping wound that never ceases to remind you of what had been, or what could have been, or-"
He paused, contemplating the blade in his hand. He let the blazing sun catch the steel that wasn't sticky with blood, and sighed deeply. "I don't know why I'm explaining this to you. You could never understand. Never-" He paused, his gaze shifting over to the scene which had caught Aiyana's eye. Murderous rage overtook his features, and he uttered a growled curse as he wiped the sword's blade on the scanty leather plates that made up the Ghazard's pathetic armor. It was a small improvement, but he had no time to spend wiping blood away when he intended to spill more with it.

Keira let out a warning hiss, her eyes dark and suspicious of everyone around her. The familiar sensation tugged at her memory, sought purchase in pockets of doubt and mistrust and unconfidence. She glanced at Mortelia, and the woman stared back- her coal black eyes burned into Keira's frightened blue gaze, but she could not break the eye contact.
"You, girl," she addressed Keira, "are another failure. Another waste of time. You could have been great, you know. You could have had anything you wanted. And you threw it away." She turned away from Tilana, stepping towards the blonde rider. Her fingertips found the tip of the smaller girl's chin and tilted it up, while her searching gaze delved into Keira's mind, sensing the entity that fed off of the weakness that lay inside. "You still have a chance, girl. Don't make the same mistake twice."
