 First, you write beautifully. Second, I have been struggling with how to respond to this. I grew up in an outer ring suburb of Minneapolis back when it was safe to ride my horse to the PDQ mini-mart (well, "safe" maybe isn't the best word, considering the temperment of the horse). In many ways, I had the best of both worlds - near enough to a decent-sized city - far enough out not to be oppressed by it, and my parents are almost perversely middle-class.

But I saw what you saw, first when I was a teenager working at a ranch where I made 50 cents a trail-rider plus free board and went everywhere with at least a little bit of horseshit on my pants, and then later, during my first year of law school, when I had no hidden means and was working desperately trying to keep body and soul together without getting too far behind in my studies. People look at you funny when hay falls out of your book bag. I tried not to be bothered by it. They didn't know me. They were assholes. But it hurt. And it angered me.
