Johnson on the COT test at talladega:
I can say though the thing that I've done on other tracks, because I haven't raced one here, but on short tracks, if you use the bumper too much, the way that the front bumpers have the struts attached to them that hook to the splitter, if you hit someone too hard t will pull the splitter up and actually change the shape of it and create lift in the car, which would be a big problem.

let me see now.... front end lift, at 200mph at Talladega. If I'm not mistaken, planes that weigh less than a Cup car can get off the ground at slower speeds.....The roof flaps might come in handy, although the car could still be going forward as it leaves the ground. Yeah, I agree Jim, that could be a problem. I wonder if they are going to tell the air traffic controlers in the region that there may be some UFOs on their radar screens that day.

Junior oughta just cut his losses, write DEI a check to cover his salary for the next 10 races and then go to the Bahamas for 10 weeks. see you at daytona Bitch. did I say that out loud?

I sure hope Doug Yates has a shrink because I think he will need one after putting Kvapil and Gilliland in cup cars for 08. If a veteran with the skills of Rudd couldnt get it done in the 88 what makes them think Kvapil will? And I think Gilliland will be on eggshells for 08 knowing that he has to step it up a notch in order to keep the ride.

had to be a typo but I am sure I'm not the only person who saw it.

so today we had an agility show... second one in two days. Our club president is a very nice lady named Yan. Not sure where she got that name but anyway. She breeds german shepherds and usually has five or six in her house at any one time. So a couple of ladies in the group are standing with me next to Yan's truck. One of the ladies said her daughter wants a second dog but she heard you shouldn't bring a puppy into a house with a full grown dog. I said I never had a problem except with Bear and Shadow. All my others were successful. The other lady said, "Yan never has a problem and she brings new dogs into her house all the time." I said, "Thats because Yan is the dominant dog in her house." Both women burst out laughing. I said, "She's standing behind me, isn't she?" They just kept laughing. I turn around and there she is standing there snickering at my red face. She said, "I come around the truck in time to hear you say I'm the dominant dog in my house." One of the other ladies says, "But he meant it in the most flattering way."

After that every time she told us to do something she'd remind us all that she's the dominant dog.

could someone look at this an explain it to me...

Top-35 in Owner Points and guaranteed a starting spot at New Hampshire:
#21 still 35th and increases its lead over the #22 to 19 points [was 4 last week
33) #70-Sauter/Haas 2075, 150 pts ahead of 36th
34) #45-Petty/Petty Racing 2013, +88
35) #21-Elliott/Wood Bros. 1944, +19
these teams and drivers must qualify by speed:
36) #22-Blaney/Bill Davis 1925, 4 pts behind 35th
37) #10-Riggs/Evernham 1743, -201

How can Elliott be 19 points ahead of 36th, but Blaney is only 4 points behind 35th?

Math was not my strongest subject, but if I am 19 minutes ahead of you, are you not 19 minutes behind me? Is there time travel involved here or am I missing something?

the chase will still be about Junior. I would almost guarantee it. and someone will sit down and figure out that under the old system Junior would have won the championship this year. You watch... I am NOT saying anything against Junior. I have absolutely nothing against him. What I AM saying is that Junior fans are so important to nascar because of sheer numbers, that they will find a way to make Junior important through the chase.

If he wins a race or two during the chase, people will say "Look, he deserved to be in the chase" but the fact of the matter is, that team wasn't good enough to make it. if they were, they'd have made it.

I would be willing to bet that Dale Earnhardt Jr will be the 2008 Sprint Cup Champion though. I have absolute faith in the idea that Hendrick will pour all of their resources at it next year. especially if Gordon or Johnson give Hendrick a championship this year. Personally I hope he wins it just t shove it down the throats at DEI.

Chevy hopes to get Stewart back in Cup: One of the top executives in the General Motors racing operation said the automaker will attempt to sign Tony Stewart to a contract with another Chevrolet team after his current deal with Joe Gibbs Racing expires. “We’d be interested in Tony staying with Chevy,” Brent Dewar, GM North America vice president of sales, service and parts, said Friday at Richmond International Raceway. “Most fans don’t realize that the drivers sign with the teams, and we all respect that. I understand he’s through 2009 currently with Gibbs. We’d love for him to continue with Chevrolet down the road. … “We’ve had a great relationship with Tony.” Dewar also said Chevrolet will continue to support Stewart’s hobby—sprint-car racing—despite his defection to Toyota next year along with the rest of the Gibbs drivers. “We’ve just got to sit down and see if it makes sense for all parties,” Dewar said. “We are starting to work with him and develop … he’s passionate about sprint cars, so we can see some avenues.” Stewart said during last week’s Toyota press conference that he is planning an aggressive round of contract negotiations with his team.(Ford Racing)(9-8-2007)

as of this minute, Jeff Gordon is 430 points ahead of Jimmie Johnson. Unless Gordon wins tonight, by this time tomorrow, Johnson will have moved ahead of Gordon, Stewart, Hamlin, Edwards and Kenseth and into first place. In fact, if Gordon doesn't win the race, Johnson doesn't even have to start the race and he'll still move into first.

How the f%$# does nascar think thats fair???

I know what they were thinking when they said 10 points for a win: they assumed the guy with the most wins would be in first place and not stuck in 6th. I absolutely agree that drivers should get more points for a win but this is just nuts.

GEM/Petty to merge? Petty Enterprises, NASCAR's most storied organization, is open to a change of ownership. The two-car operation owned by seven-time champion Richard Petty is having discussions with Montreal Canadiens owner George Gillett Jr. that would allow it to merge with Gillett Evernham Motorsports and form a four-car Nextel Cup organization. "They have quoted some numbers,'' Kyle Petty, the CEO of Petty Enterprises and driver of the #45 Dodge, said on Friday at Richmond International Raceway. Gillett recently purchased majority ownership of Evernham Motorsports, now known as Gillett Evernham Motorsports. Petty said Gillett has floated an offer in which the companies would merge but allow Petty Enterprises to continue working under its flagship name. For that to happen, Gillett Evernham Motorsports would have to drop one of its three teams to comply with NASCAR's cap of four cars. The #10 car of Scott Riggs would be the most likely victim. Riggs is out of the top 35 in owner's points that automatically qualify for races and his contract is up after this season. Kasey Kahne and Elliott Sadler are solidly in the top 35 in owner's points with Kahne at 22 and Sadler at 28. Both Petty Enterprises cars also are in the top 35 with Bobby Labonte at 18 and Kyle Petty at 34. Evernham said there's no doubt the proper business model is for a four-car operation. Because he already has a relationship with the Pettys, supplying the organization with engines and technical support, he would be all for a merger. "I think we could combine the organizations and be stronger,'' he said. "How the car numbers work, I don't know.'' Petty said he is far from a deal with Gillett, which took more than six months to finalize his deal with Evernham, or any suitor. Should a merger with Gillett occur, Petty said the organization would consider every option from relocating to Salisbury, N.C., as has been discussed regardless to moving to Evernham's shop in Statesville, N.C. "We've been in this business 60 years,'' Petty said. "When you look at it this just seems to be the trend of the moment. Do you jump on the trend of the moment or do you stay the course? We've been the same course for 60 years. Whether that's the right course or wrong course I'm not going to say.''(ESPN.com)(9-8-2007

I've destroyed almost every part of my computer at one time or another but the mb has always survived.

We have a lady in our agility group that is a great photographer. She took the photos I showed you a while back of Shadow and she took the one that was on the front and back cover of For Sam. She took the team photo. I was the one losing my patience. You can't see me thank God but I was behind the table... hidden by dogs and the barrel. I was holding the dogs on the table in place. doing that without having Sheba try to find me was a trick in itself.

My goal in life is to be as good with the camera as Shelley. On Tuesday night some of us were talking about photos and one I said I was starting to take some pretty good ones. A lady said, "Are you as good as Shelley?" Shelley said, "Look through his album. He's better." Not likely. I am still working on the freakin train. you'd think the train station in truro would be able to give me a schedule. I gotta call Canadian National. I should just go to the houses next to the tracks and ask.

Just before I left, the "motherboard" went out on their most expensive computer. I just found out yesterday that same photographer blamed me for the damage. Behind my back. (there's no way it was my fault)

Well I found this out yesterday, because one of my long time co workers there, called me to say that the same photographer blew out the new "motherboard" . Guess he cant blame this one on me. Hahaha.

Right now those guys have to be in some panic. This is their busiest time of year.

Thats JUST the photogs time.

I think that is a great shot...all those dogs...*snicker* I'd love to see dpl's head photographer (a real ass) get an assignment like that. Hahaha he's afraid of dogs. Now THAT would be sweet revenge.

Jim Aust, president of Toyota Racing Development, would not reveal terms of the deal but said JGR had made "a life-changing decision to go with Toyota now until their isn't racing anymore."

First, the writer can't spell, but aside from that, what does 'life changing' and 'until there isn't racing anymore,' mean?????????????????????????/

do you think JD Gibbs was stupid enough to sign a lifetime contract with Toyota? who the hell would be that insane????????????????????????????????????????? what if they never get the V8 engine figured out? Its unlikely, but it was unlikely that Toyotas would miss 70 races this year... it was unlikely that Michael Waltrip Racing would use jet fuel at Daytona. It was unlikely that Dale Jarrett would miss as many races as he makes.... it was unlikely that jeremy mayfield would have a brain fart... well, that was pretty much a given but the rest is accurate...
What if Toyota doesn't get the engine figured out? Sure, JGR was on the leading edge of the R07 engine for GM but its almost certain they signed non-disclosure agreements. Sure the engine guys will take the knowledge in their heads but JD Gibbs has to know that if Toyota gets proprietary information, there will be some lawsuits that could concievably even bar the Toyotas from racing... yes, boys and girls, if GM gets the right judge, they can get an injunction to stop Toyota from using that stuff until it goes to trial. They have to know that.
why the hell would they sign a lifetime deal?????????

So I went to a huge hardware store today. had to use the washroom so I had to get a key from automotive service. The guy says, "Are you Rick Dupuis?" Yes. "Can I talk to you?" I really need to take a leak. "I really need to talk to you." I bet I need to go pee more than you need to talk to me. I'll be right back. So I go to the bathroom. When I come out, the guy is standing by the door. here's the conversation almost word for word.

Is it true Tony Stewart is going to be in a Toyota next year?

Yes

What am I supposed to do?

What?

I've been a fan since he won his first race at Richmond. What do I do now?

I'm not sure what you want me to say.

How long have you known this was going to happen?

I wrote in my column months ago that is was a rumor. I've known for sure for a month or so.

I'm not sure what to do.

Honest to God, the guy looked like he was going to cry. I don't know what he wanted me to say. All I could say was Stewart didn't look nearly as excited as he said he was and that I'd be surprised if he was still in a Toyota when his current contract expires.

My OLY? I love my Oly. I've taken some of my best shots with that lil camera. It was quick, quiet BUT It is 35mm.
When you're a custom color printer you hate dealing with a negative that will yield at best a 16 X 20 print. With my medium format camera I can get negs that are 2in X 2in or 64.5 X 2. On a roll of 220 film I can get 30 shots with a 64.5 back. That, is what I shot that Monte Carlo with. but get this, my shutter seed was as I counted it one thousand one. I could steady that camera perfectly and take timed exposures. That Monte Carlo was a hand held timed exposure. Don't get me started...next thing you know I'll be back in the desert in Utah...Sorry I do go on...

I absolutely love it. printed as a 4X6 orginally and the had one printed as a 5X7 for framing. I really think I like the smaller one better so will probably matt and frame it rather than the larger one.
I took the photo on Tuesday night. On Thursday night I showed it to her and sugegsted we try another and maybe try to get the whole side of her face in it. she said she'd pose but that it wouldn't be the same because this one was spur of the moment and not posed... sometimes kids are smarter than adults so I decided not to attempt the second photo.

some friends and I were disussing the fact that everyone has their price and of course it degenerated to the point that someone said any woman would sleep with a man for the right price. every female present said no way would they sleep with someone for money. The argument became, and I don't think anyone can argue against this:

when a man starts laying down $100 bills, at some point there will be enough of them laying there to make any woman say, "Ok, lets go up stairs."

Like the 92 year old man at a party who approaches a beautiful 19 year old swim suit model...

"Will you have sex with me for two million dollars?"

"Sure."

"Ok, I'll give you five bucks for a blow..."

"What kind of girl do you think I am?"

I'd like to know how they can blame the sponsor for something the team owner did. If HD walked out on their contracts how can you respect them?

I think JGR is absolutely insane for making this move. I want no part of them, but the people/companies that are under contract cannot be blamed for what they did.

I can guarantee you this much: Hendrick Motorsports, JR Motorsports and anyone else that has a branch of the US Military as a sponsor will NEVER switch to Toyotas. I'd be shocked if any branch of the military went with a Dodge team.
I do wonder what JGR would say if the Japanese Defence Force wanted to sponsor a car...

by the way... what kind of cameras do you guys have? What kind of television does Leo watch the race on? hhmmm... Made in Japan I bet..... or maybe China... at least the Japs are pretending to be on our side.

I wouldn't be too quick to cut my ties with Home Depot and I'll tell you why...

When a company signs on with a race team, they almost never (I don;t know of a single one) have a manufacturer named in the contract. What that means is, when HD signed on with JGR, they did so with the team running GM cars. My guess is, there was nothing in their contract with JGR that says they could leave without penalty if JGR switched car makes. So you cannot blame Home Depot for that... and I can almost promise you that if Stewart leaves in 2009, Home Depot will leave when their contract expires.

I'd be willing to bet that FedEx and Home Depot are locked into these contracts with no 'out' as far as manufacturer goes. Now I bet there is something in there that lets them out if the team embarasses them but my guess is no judge would agree that switching to Toyota constitutes embarassing them.

Do not be one bit surprised if Home Depot was not consulted on this. Remember, nobody from either Home Depot or FedEx was there.... neither was an Interstate Batteries rep. I'd be willing to bet JGR consulted everyone except sponsors. Even Stewart had a JGR shirt on and nothing saying Home Depot was even present....

since Sheba got hurt in May 2006 she has not done any agility. She has gone on a diet and lost 21 pounds and she has been through a year of physiotherapy. She does the agility shows but she is handled by a little girl and Sheba wears saddlebags full of candy that she hands out to kids along with her photos.
I have started working with a border collie in agility. Tonight we were taking this year's photos so Sheba was at the practice. After we did four or five run throughs I took the border collie home and then went back. When I got there, everyone was looking for me... we were supposed to do the relays and I'd forgotten all about it. Yan, the club president said, "We're a dog short."
The relays are pretty cool and very fast. There is a row of jumps about a foot off the ground and then a tunnel. The tunnel is in the shape of a U so the dogs do the jumps, go into the tunnel and do the jumps again to get back. The other side is a row of hoola hoops about 6 inches off the ground and a tunnel then back.
So we are a dog short. I said, "I'll run Sheba but it has to be the hoops. I won't make her do any jumps." So for the first time in over a year, Sheba and I got in line. There were eight or ten people in the benches watching... husbands, wives, mothers of people in the group. Some had never ever seen Sheba run. So I yelled over, "You guys better watch this because we are never doing it again."
When it was our turn, Sheba just flew. I could hear Yan screaming "Holy Crap! Look at her!" We got back and Sheba had won her relay... for the first time in her life. She had never won one. Next relay was dog against dog and this time she was even faster. She got a 'standing ovation.' I fell down on the grass and Sheba pounced on me. Monica, one of the teenagers came over to hug her and she said, "oh my God, you're crying!" and she hugged me too.
One of the older ladies came over and said, "That was awesome! Are you going to do that in the show?" I said I couldn't because I'd never forgive myself if she got hurt again. Yan said, "No. And no one ever asks him to do that again."
That was the only time Sheba will ever do that but at least now I know she would be one of the fastest dogs in the group if she did it.

Your story reminded me of something that happened to Kyle Petty a few years ago. It was at Darlington. Jimmie Johnson's car was parked next to Petty's in the garage. Kyle was in the garage talking to someone. After the guy left, one of Johnson's crewmembers walked over to Kyle and said, "Who was the old guy?" Kyle just looked at him and said, "That old guy has won more races here than anyone alive."
It was David Pearson.
That's the problem today. You show some of these new guys photographs of the people who built this sport and I bet nine out of ten couldn't name five out of ten in the photos. What a shame that is. And what a shame it is that Bobby Allsion is left to do what he's doing.
I bet Kevin Harvick won more money winning the Daytona 500 than Allsion won in his career.
I'm glad you told that story.

giving money to the MS Society becaus ehe has discovered that only about 12% goes to research. the rest goes to pay salaries of people at the ms society. At lunch the other day I was telling him about the Victory Junction Gang Camp and how it works. he said, "Lets do this. Get in touch with them. we can fly down and meet with them. If Petty will get behind it, we'll forget about raising $20,000 next year and we'll raise a million and give it all to the camp. In exchange, he brings in a week of kids with MS. If he will get his name on the effort, we can do that. Won't cost him a dime and he gets every penny we raise." So after Targa this year we are going to put a package together and go down and meet them.
We'll see what happens.

drive the motorhome from town to town so Rick has a place to sleep. Today he says, "Tell me the truth. No bullmoose just the truth. Whats Targa really like?"

I said, "Well its..."

MacLeod says, "I'll answer that. Every night the navigator has to go to a meeting where he is given the maps for the next day, and he's told all the rules and cautions to look for the next day." Second night, Dupuis goes to the meeting. Two hours later I'm laying on the bed in the hotel room and he comes in through the door carrying a stack of papers and a map. His face is snow white and he says, "We're gonna die tomorrow." Thats what Targa is like every minute of every day. Take a turn 2 miles an hour faster than you should and you are in someone's house or the Atlantic Ocean. Your nerves are shot by day 3."

Roger penske is the owner. Thats his decision. Tell you what I'd do.... tear up the oval but leave the grandstands exactly as they are. But build a 2 1/2 mile road course there. move the haulers and buildings either outside or underground. Nowhere else on earth can EVERYONE in the grandtsands would see every square inch of the road course. That would be awesome.

the smartest thing I've heard these bozos on raceday say in a long time. Fontana NEEDS to be tore up. You dont even have to shorten the track (although I think it would make it that much better) BUT put some bankin in it fer cryin out loud.

I take it back. Shorten the track. This area will NEVER be the huge market nascrap wants it to be. So build a track to suit the market that IS here. HELLLLOOOO NASCRAP CAN YOU HEAR ME????

Idiot MacLeod and his equally touched brother in law are standing on this dirt... thats not rocks. its dirt. red dirt. they grow potatoes in this dirt. Its about thirty feet above the water.

I said, "You guys wanna take a look at what you're standing on?" they look down... don't get it.... I said, See the way the dirt is worn away in layers?" Yeah... thats cool. "Yeah well you see those pretty little sea shells?" Yeah, maybe we'll take some back to Ashleigh. "Yeah, do you know what the layers of dirt and the sea shells mean?" No. "It means the waves come up here, and you're standing six inches from the edge with your back to the water." wish I got a picture of them hauling ass.

Is this a good idea?
Johnny will be in the # 44 Busch car in todays race. This taken from RacingWest...

Borneman will start 42nd. Might get a little scary for him in the race though. Cars are going to be flying by him like he is parked. He was 1.702 seconds and 6.101 mph slower than the 41st quickest. He was 5.746 seconds and 22.684 mph slower than Denny Hamlin, who won the pole. At least he made the race. I guess.

is always greener. You may do well in this heat. BUT the number one statement I hear from people who move here from a decidedly contrast climate is, "I miss the seasons". There are only two seasons here, hot and hotter. The trees dont turn colors, no cleansing snow to cover the side walks. Most Christmas temps hover around the 85 degree mark.

One should spend at least a summer here before moving here.

Stephen Stills said it quite aptly. "When the pioneers were passing through this area...What in the world made them stop"? ;)

Music City Motorplex to name race for Adam Petty: The Music City Motorplex will honor Adam Petty, who was killed in 2000 while practicing for a Busch Series race, during the 25th annual All-American 400. The All-American 400, scheduled for Nov. 2-4, is an ASA Late Model Series race which pits stockcar drivers from the North and South against one another. Pattie Petty said she and her husband, Kyle Petty, were honored by the motorplex's decision to name the race for their son. Mayfield's team expects 'big penalties' from infraction: Joe Lax, crew chief for Jeremy Mayfield's #36 Toyota, is expecting a significant penalty after his team got caught putting illegal weight in the car. In pre-qualifying inspection Friday at California Speedway, Mayfield's Bill Davis Racing car was found to have too much camber in the rear end. The team fixed the problem, which requires taking a blowtorch to the rear of the car, and went back through the inspection line, but the car was found to be too light on the right side. Then, in a moment of desperation, a team member stuck a piece of lead inside the water bottle to add the extra weight. But NASCAR discovered the illegal trick, which is considered tampering with the car.(SceneDaily.com)(9-1-2007)
