Subject: CT SCAN RESULTS

I went to the doctor’s office today for my CT scan results. Unfortunately, the news was not good. I will be changing chemo drugs next week. I will be put on Avastin and Abraxane. I will be going once every two weeks and should be in the office for about 3 hours each time. I will lose all hair again, this time on my entire body.

This is a summary of what was found:

1. Fluid in the lungs. *

2. Fluid around the heart. *

3. All of the masses have increased in size.

4. There are several more small masses that have developed. *

5. The masses in the lymph nodes in my chest have also increased in size. They are real close to the esophagus and wind pipe.

6. Small node on the left adrenal gland. * (The adrenal glands are orange-colored endocrine glands which are located on the top of both kidneys.)

7. Swelling under the skin in all the tissues seen on CT scan. *

8. Skin thickening of the chest wall where I had the mastectomy. *

9. A few small nodes have appeared in my armpit area (axilla). *

* = new issues

Lately I’ve been having chest pains when I lay down. I figured it was from the blood clot. It seems that it is partly from that but also because of the increased size of the masses in the center of my chest.

I supposed I could have received much better news but I’m still determined to beat this thing. Or at least manage it WELL for a very very very long time. To be feeling as well as I am, I sure my faith in God has a lot to do with that. I also believe all of your prayers are helping.

The following side effects are common (occurring in greater than 30%) for patients taking Abraxane:

Hair loss.
Nausea.
Abnormal ECG (electrocardiogram)
Peripheral neuropathy (numbness and tingling of hands and feet)
Arthralgias and myalgias, pain in the joints and muscles. (see pain) Usually temporary occurring 2-3 days after Abraxane, and resolve within a few days.

Increases in blood tests measuring liver function. These return to normal once treatment is discontinued.

The following are less common side effects for patients receiving Abraxane:

Infections
Diarrhea
Vomiting
Mouth sores
Swelling of feet or ankles

I'm sorry to hear that the news wasn't better. I was hoping those navel beans would do the trick. I'm glad to see that you still have a positive attitude, though!

Thanks, Cliff. Well, I've said all along that it doesn't matter what I'm given, I plan on being here. I just hope God's will is the same as my will.

What a birthday present, huh?!?!?! At least Mom will be well enough for our traditional family birthday dinners. We always go for steamed crab on everyone's birthdays. So, crabs it will be on Tuesday. Yummy!!

Crabs for you birthday.... Are you going to save me some??????? Wouldn't it be great if crabs contained powerful anti-cancer chemicals?? That would be the ultimate in chemotherapy! (And maybe oyster shooters would cure the common cold!)

By the way, since it's the new year--I'm still planning to take you to dinner and a car cruise, and I don't want to hear any excuses this year!
