YOU ARE JUST NOW GETTING OVER BEING SICK??! Good grief!! It's been a couple months, hasn't it??

Lately I've been feeling like I'm needing more prayers. I just have an ominous feeling. Thank you so much for your prayers! Please feel free to post messages more often. I need to feel like people are out there checking on my progress I guess.

The turtles are doing great!! They now share their tank with two Oregon Newts that I purchased. Everyone gets along well but the Newts have a hard time competing for food. Those turtles are PIGS!!! But they are so cool! I love watching them. All I have to do is shake their food can and they swim over to the side of the tank and stretch their necks anxiously awaiting their chow. It's so funny! I'm so glad you brought them to me.

I love you and miss you too. Any idea when you'll be back in this state again??

They do Karioke every other Friday night. I talked to Randy tonight, he forgot to call Gary to find out if it was this week or next week that they are there. Randy went on a job interview this afternoon and HE GOT THE JOB!!! He will be doing remodeling work now.

I reminded him to find out when Buttons and Gary will be there next. He said he will check and let me know soon. If you want to know, I'll let you know when. I'm supposed to let Sharon know because she wants to go too.

I had my appointment with my oncologist today for a refill of my Xeloda pills.

So, here's the update....

I should have started the next cycle of Xeloda chemotherapy today however my white blood cell count is up to 16,000. The normal range is between 4,000 and 10,000. This means that my body is trying to fight something. I was achy this morning until after I took my shower. I told him that's how I was feeling early today but felt okay after the shower. He said he suspects I'm getting a "bug". So, just in case, he told me not to start the chemo today. I am to wait until tomorrow to see how I feel. If I feel okay then I can start it tomorrow. If I feel achy again or worse then I don't start them and I am to call him.

He said that he will schedule another CT scan in about 6 weeks for a follow-up. He will schedule it sooner if I become symptomatic again, i.e., pain.

By the way, April 30th is "Bench Seat Racin" day at Cecil County Dragway. That's when a lot of Mark's buddies take their cars up to Cecil County and race. Technically it's called a "Test -n- Tune" but Mark's friends pick day that they call "BSR" day to go up. Mark's not sure if he'll be racing his wagon that day or not, the wagon needs a little work. But he'll be there most likely to spectate. And you know if Mark goes then I'm going.

I went out to dinner with my Dad, Mom, Aunt Nancy, Mark, and my half brother John and his family. It was a nice and FILLING dinner at Cactus Willy's in Bel Air.

Thanks for the spring wishes! I can guarantee it will be productive and we can hope and pray for healthy.

I got your email... That was a shame to hear. Any progress yet? Do you still want progress?

Sure hope your Dad is doing well. I keep him in my prayers.

Lookin' forward to those spring and summer car cruises!!!!!

Dinner was nice. My niece's boyfriend was there--he's a firefighter, and he finally answered the question, "Why, when an ambulance is sent on a call to someone's house, does a fire truck show up too?" (The answer is: Not because they need the truck, but because the truck brings extra personnel in case they're needed. Should have realized that a long time ago!)

My dad is still doing ok. Still not time for his 3-month scan to see if the new drug is working.

Yeah, I DO want progress in my personal situation. Communication still seems to be open, and I gather that's a good thing. I really thought she was "the one," and I hope she still will be some day. Got her mom on my side, so I guess that can't hurt!

You know, I might have to check out a car cruise with you this spring. Haven't seen you in a while! They have them at the shopping center down the street from me, but it's not a very big deal.

Ya know, I was born in DC, and grew up in PG County. I used to listen to the Senators on the radio as I went to sleep. My first MLB games were Senators games at DC Stadium (before it was renamed RFK). My very first game was Senators v. Yankees, and I got to see Mickey Mantle play (I think it was his last season). But I've been here in Baltimore since '84, and I now consider my self a Baltimoron, not a Washingtonian--don't want to go back to DC! (The traffic REALLY sucks!) So I'm not going to worry about the Nationals. I say:

It's finally here!! I'm so happy to see Spring arrive! How are you doing these days? Ready for racing season? I can't wait to get there. Dave doesn't have his car ready yet. We have been pretty busy lately. We leave for Disney World on April 9th for a week & we just bought a new pool because we have to take down the one we have now because we are getting a 28x32 garage built in the beginning of June. So between the garage the pool & getting all the permits that has filled up alot of our time & getting our trip planned out we are exhausted!! Now we need a vacation more than before!! We just took Dana on Friday to Pittsburgh to see Care Bears Live she had so much fun she had front row seats and her face was so funny when they came out!It was so amazing to her! Hope all is well on your end & I will talk to you soon.

Hey Jenn!! Heck yea I'm ready for racin' season!! I'm ready for all the different kinds of fun that spring and summer bring.

That's cool that you bought a new pool! I'm sure Dana will have a blast in that. I'm jealous about Disney World, that's one place I'd love to go!!

I'm doing pretty good, I'm just real tired all the time. Everyday around 3:00 in the afternoon I'm ready to take a nap. Sometimes I force myself to stay up and other times I don't have a choice but to lay down. When I do, it's usually from 2 to 4 hours. And then I even sleep through the night for about 9 or 10 hours!!

For those of you that knew my cat, SYLVESTER, I am saddened to say that he passed away this afternoon. He was eleven years old. I'm not really sure what happened but he got real sick over the last few days. His belly swelled up huge almost the size of a soccer ball and just as round. I started giving him an antibiotic but it didn't make any improvements. Since he was especially miserable today, I considered taking him to the vet but I knew he wasn't going to make it through the day. So I just sat with him and tried to comfort him. He passed away at 5:30 this afternoon.

Jack, it's great to hear from you! I often wonder how you're doing and how the new job is going. In fact, Mom and I were just talking about you Sunday.

All is well on my end. I've been REALLY busy lately. The last weekend in February my brother and I drove to North Carolina to move my Mom's sister up here. Aunt Nancy moved in with Mom and it's going great! It's wonderful having her here with us! This passed weekend I helped my neighbor waterproof her basement. Then we painted, cleaned and arranged all the furniture in the basement. It was a HUGE job but we managed to get it all done over the weekend. She wanted to surprise her mother and fortunately her mother was thrilled.

How is Betty? I hope she is doing well. Please tell her Mom and I said hello. Have you been to the doctor lately? I keep both of you in my prayers.

I saw the doctor two weeks ago. I was supposed to start the next cycle of my chemo last Monday but he wasn't happy with the side effects that I've been having with my hands. Instead of a 7-day break, I ended up with a 14-day break. I started the Xeloda pills and the new cycle today. Fortunately the 14-day break really helped my hands. Unless the pain in my side worsens, he doesn't plan on sending me for another CT scan for at least two months.

I will email you both of my email addresses. They go back-n-forth with working and not working so just use both of them. Or write me here.

Hey, thanks for stopping in. I've been doing pretty good. I've had a few side effects from the chemo that caused the doctor to give me an extended break. I won't start up on the chemo again until this coming Monday. So I will have a 14-day break instead of a 7-day break.

I am so anxious for nice "springy" weather that I can't stand it!! I can't wait to get out there on my scooter!!

I know you sent me an email with prices for a towing package but can you send me another one? I'm thinking the tow hitch would have to be able withstand at least 500 pounds so it can hold a rack AND the scooter. Did your cost include a rack or no? By the way, it would have to have a 2 inch receiver.

Looking forward to Cecil this year!! I want to take the scooter up there and run around on it.

How do you like Mark's new bike?

Ahhh, I've made it through another cycle of chemo!! I'm on my 7-day break now and I see the doctor again on Monday, March, 7th.

I've had more fatigue, as usual. That doesn't seem to let up. I've also had burning in my heels. That is a side effect. Hopefully that won't get any worse. Thank goodness hand-cream makes them feel better.

I'm tired of snow, c'mon spring!!

Enjoy your break time! Get some rest! One of these days, that stinkin' thing in your lung will be gone, and you won't have to deal with this stuff.

My dad has been taking his pills for about three weeks or so. It's too early to tell if they're really working yet. One of the side effects of his drug is a rash. When he saw the doc this week, he mentioned the rash, and the doc said, "Good!" According to the doc, there seems to be a strong correlation between the rash and the effectiveness of the drug--patients for whom the drug works well tend to get the rash. So I guess it's the first time I've ever heard of anyone who was HAPPY with a rash!

Hi Stacy!

You mentioned below that you aren't having to clean off the car and drive in to work -- now that's the way to enjoy snow! (The other way is back in the land of dry snow, breaking the trail up the mountain -- think wading through very cold, waist-high shipping-peanuts and you'll have a rough idea.)

Sending wishes for very effective Xeloda.

Where were you working when you DID have to clean the snow off the car and go in?

Take care,
-- John

Subject: DOCTOR VISIT UPDATE

Stacy

Date Posted: 09:00:07 02/19/05 Sat

Here's the update from my doctor's visit yesterday. Dr. Hahn received the written report from the radiologist for the CT scan. According to the scan, there is very minimal growth of the mass. He said at this point he is not willing to give up on the Xeloda pill chemotherapy.

I started the new cycle yesterday and as usual I will take 8 pills per day for 14 days. I am excited to get to stay on this chemo to try to give it a chance to work. Sometimes the pills take longer to take effect. As long as I'm on this drug I get to keep my hair!! YEA!!

I was a little concerned because the CT scan said that a "sclerotic focus" was detected on one of my vertebrae and they suggested a bone scan to rule out the cancer spreading to the bones. However, Dr. Hahn has never said anything about it. I read the report myself and saw their findings.

I called his office today to ask about it. He said he is aware of it and he is watching it. At this point he believes it is the mass that is in my lung. That mass is VERY close to the spine and it may be attaching itself to the spine. It is not "mets" to the bone however we will continue to watch it. If any other spots appear on future CT scans then I will get a bone scan. So far it does not warrant a change in chemotherapy. If more spots appear then I would have to take a drug to strengthen the bones. It's called Zometa. But that is not necessary now.

All in all it was a good visit. I was so excited to find out that I am continuing on the same path I've been on. AND I was VERY excited to hear that the lymph nodes are still in remission!

Hi Stacy, Yes, I am praying loudly that the mass disappears with the chemo. You know how I feel about prayer--God wants to know what we want, and I don't hesitate asking!! He has been good to both you and Jack, and I pray that it will continue---I know that it will!! I pray daily for your good health.

It is great news that the lymph nodes are in remission!! Dr. Hahn sounds as though he has everything under control. That is good. I can tell that you like him.

Remember too, that Feb. will soon be over and Spring will soon be on its way. That is always a happy thought.

Keep up the good attitude and remember to laugh ofter--I know that you do. Jack and I send our love and prayers. Bonnie

Hey Stacy
Sounds like it was indeed a good visit. I'm very glad to hear that the lymph nodes are clear! From what you told me when all this started, that was the biggest concern. Hopefully that bugger in your lung will get tired and give up!

Hope you had a chance to get outside today and enjoy your scooter! These 60-degree days don't happen too often in February--gotta take advantage of them!

I had a follow-up CT scan today (Monday).

I took my films over to my doctor so he could read them. He said that the cancer is still growing. There is a clear increase in comparison to the December scan however it still isn't a lot of growth.

Needless to say this means I will not continue on the Xeloda pill form of chemotherapy. I finished my 14 day cycle yesterday and now I am on a 7 day break. Regardless of what happens, I have to have this break. It is normal in any chemotherapy regiment.

We rescheduled my appointment to see him from this Thursday to Monday, February 14th. At that time he will decide on the next plan of attack. We will also have the official results from the CT scan from the radiologist that will read the films.

Hi Aunt Nancy!! Thanks for the prayers. Fortunately the doctor has a week to think about what plan of action he wants to take. I imagine he will consult with the other doctor in his office to decide what is the best course. He usually does talk with the other doctor.

I'm looking forward to the end of the month!! After that we won't have to impatiently wait for your visits... you'll be living here!!

I was supposed to come to AJ some time this week to have lunch with Patty but I haven't heard anything out of her yet so I doubt that I'll be there. I'll have to stop down some time just to visit everyone.

I read some info on that drug last night. Of course, a lot of it was in medical terminology, beyond my comprehension. I just know that they found a spot on December's x-ray that wasn't there on November's, so hopefully it's still quite small, and can be knocked out fairly quickly. The Taxol sure accomplished that, but we'd like Dad to be able to WALK in the future!

Good luck with your scan. I hope YOUR new drug has been working!

I just heard Marty Bass say that we ARE getting snow this weekend. He said expect it to start around noon on Saturday and end around noon on Sunday. Expect 6 to 12 inches. Those that live in the Baltimore area and north lean more towards the 12 inches. Those that live south like around Laurel lean more towards 6 inches!

I'm glad we didn't get as much snow as they were calling for. I always have to dig out an area for the babies for when nature calls.

Sorry to hear about your Dad. Have you found out what they are going to give him this time around? I'm sure the news was quite disappointing for him and your mother.

My uncle isn't doing so well. I'm not sure of all the details yet but I don't think the chemo has helped him much. I think they are at a point where they are going to decide if he's even going to continue with treatment. I have to find out the details. He's the one with prostate and lung cancer.

I had a message from my mom today. She said the V.A. has agreed to provide the new chemo drug. My parents are covered by Medicare, and a supplement through Blue Cross/Blue Shield, but they wouldn't pay for the drug because it's a pill, and they consider it "outpatient" treatment. But since my dad was in the Navy during WWII, he sometimes goes to the V.A. medical center in his area. He'll be able to get the new drug (I still can't remember the name of it) that way--in fact, my mom said they were on their way out the door to get it. They're VERY happy, because this is definitely the doctor's first choice for treatment. So my dad will be doing as you're doing--taking pills at home each day, rather than going to the hospital and getting an I.V. each week. They'll do a scan after three months to check progress, as they did last time.

What a relief for all of you! That is wonderful news!! I know it is VERY expensive and I don't know how people do it that aren't covered by an insurance company. I know my pills for two weeks cost around $1,300 and fortunately I only have to pay around $50 for a copay.

I don't know how your father will respond but so far I have minimal side effects with my pills. Hopefully he will be as fortunate as I have been.

...legal ones, of course!

My dad FINALLY got his drug. He got it through the V.A., and sometimes the bureaucracy moves slowly. The drug is called Tarceva--have you heard of that one? It was just approved by the FDA in November. I'm not sure what the possible side effects are (I think my mom said that one of them could be diarrhea!), but I hope they're not too serious. Taxol worked well on Dad's cancer last year, but since it caused nerve damage in his feet, the doc doesn't want to use it again for fear that the damage would become permanent. Obviously, we're hoping the new stuff works well for him.

Hi Stacy!

I sent an email to your LilSis account (let me know if you're not receiving there anymore, though).

Did you get much snow? We only got about an inch on Saturday, and it had all melted by Sunday afternoon.

I'm still getting used to wet snow again. In Flagstaff we would easily get three feet, but the air was so thirsty at 7000 feet that three days later it was all gone again. However, I don't remember this much frozen rain from when I lived in Maryland. Did we get four or five big ice storms a year, and I've just excised that from my memory?

Hey John. I did receive your email and I will respond. You told me to write until I can't stand it so I want to take the time to write.

We had about 7 inches of snow here then we got another 2 inches this weekend. I am so ready for spring. I've seen enough snow for the season. I miss being able to go outside and STAY outside. I am looking forward to getting back out to my landscaping stuff.

We have had ice storms in the past but it seems like the south has been hammered with ice storms in the last few years. We don't get as much as they do, we get snow instead. Yea there's sleet mixed at times but we don't seem to get severe storms that often. What part of Virginia are you in?

Stacy,

Thanks for taking the time :)

For you (and for my sister), I will hope we don't get any more snow this season.

I'm near Roanoke, around the mountains, which may have something to do with it, I guess.

Did he see his shadow? I turned on the Weather Channel a couple minutes before work, but didn't see anything on it. Have you ever seen the movie with Bill Murray? If I ever teach a college course on philosophy, that movie will be the assignment for the chapter on existentialism. The plot setup gives you a model you can play with to get the fundamentals down ...

Cancer is a terrible illness but miracles can happen through love and friends and famliy support. We have a friend who is battling cancer now and if it wasn't for his music I don't think he could hold on. He plays at J.R.Tees every other Friday night there on Myrth Ave. We go there to support him and enjoy the music. His name is Tony and if you can maybe you could come listen and meet him. We will be praying for you too in your battle. Johnny Curtis is a friend of our family and he e-mailed me about you.

Thank you so much for your prayers! I see miracles in my life everyday. Just the fact that I am able to see another day makes me feel so blessed. I am doing pretty good and everyone says that I don't even look sick. I have good coloring even though I'm anemic.

My family, friends, animals, and faith in God are the reason I have every intention of being here a very long time. I love my life and value it everyday. I always saw my life as a gift and a miracle so I plan on doing everything I can to make the most of it, especially now.

Where is Myrth Avenue? I think it's wonderful that Tony has found something that brings him so much joy. I pray that he will strengthen his will to fight his battle and I pray that he wins!

I have never met John Curtis but he knows my brother. I have enjoyed "knowing" him through our web sites and I appreciate his support so much! I feel like we have become friends even though I really don't even know him. Thanks John!

I'm so glad you stopped in. I really hope that you come back in again.

Hi Jenn! We got about 7 inches of snow here then about another quarter inch yesterday afternoon.

This is one of those wonderful things I love about NOT WORKING!! I get to be home in the snow and not worry about having to drive in it. I get to let all the snow just sit on my car. I can clean it WHEN I WANT TO!!

Chessie and Zoie freeze outside even if they have sweaters on. Their poor little footsies hurt them from the cold. Tyler freezes too but he tolerates it a little better than the girls. Tyler is better when it is actually snowing. He watches the snow. Although my neighbor's 80 pound dog LOVES the snow. He rolls in it, bites at it, leaps around, and just has a ball. "Tank" is a lot of fun to watch.

I know what you mean I do enjoy not only being home with Dana everyday but when it snows I love it not having to go out & freeze my butt off!!! Even though I could loose some back there!! LOL!!!
I feel sorry for the doggies when it's cold out I was thinking of getting them booties! I'm sure Luke would chew them off even before he got back in the house! I hope our dogs realize how lucky they are to be in out of the cold when I see dogs being kept outside in weather like this or any weather at that I feel like going and getting them! I guess I have a soft heart when it comes to things like that!
How's your new meds going? Hope all is well with you! Talk to you soon!

I feel the same way you do! I hate seeing animals outside that should be protected from the elements!

I tried booties on my dogs last year and it most definitely, beyond a shadow of a doubt, DID NOT work!! All three of my dogs wouldn't put their feet down right. They kept lifting their feet and attempting to walk but they couldn't. I felt sorry for them so I took them off.

So far so good with the meds. I don't really have too many side effects. I've been REAL tired from them and occasionally I get headaches but otherwise I'm doing well. I think. My next CT scan to check progress is in early February. I can't remember the date off the top of my head but I put it on this board somewhere. I'm anxious to see if it's working or not. It needs to start kicking this thing in the butt BIG TIME!

I tried acupuncture today for the first time. A friend of mine strongly recommended it and the practitioner offered to do my treatment for free. That was incredibly generous of her so I tried it. After reading my "pulses" she said I have a real strong "life force". Since everyone's perceptions are different I asked her to explain how she meant that. Basically she meant that I have an incredible will to live and my body is strong to fight my battle. She said that she "reads" how all the organs are doing and found some weaknesses in my lungs and kidneys so she treated those areas. She said that my body is tolerating all the chemo very well and I'm still very strong. Although I know my will to live is unshaken it's always nice to hear it from someone that is examining you!!

I don't think I will be getting those booties then! Never really thought about them having trouble walking until you mentioned it but I guess when you think about it, it does make sense. I guess I was having another "BLONDE" moment! LOL!!
I hope all goes well with your meds & you are always in our thoughts & prayers. You are a VERY STRONG person and I'm sure it does feel really good to hear it from someone examining you! I'm not suprised that you got such positive feedback from her,you have an incredible outlook & positive attitude & that is wonderful you will beat this you are much stronger than it is! Hi Stacy!

Of course I remember Steve :) The three of us were going to do our own personal version of the Medley -- I still have the cover we drew for it packed away around here someplace. We were going to call it Incompliance? or some such.

I haven't heard from him -- actually I haven't heard much from anyone at HS. After a year of college, I moved to south Georgia for ten years, then to Arizona for ten years (silly pix and topics at http://thistlehaven.net/J3 if you want to see what I've wasted my time on). Now back to Virginia, maybe to stay this time.

Meanwhile the world moves on, hopefully slightly better for what each of us does and is. My prayers to you with your fight.

I don't think I ever realized that your birthday is the day before my sister's (okay, a year and a day). I'll certainly remember it from here on out :)

Take care,
-- John

I remember that! If I remember correctly we couldn't decide between something like Incompliance or Dream Reaper. Since we didn't use Dream Reaper, I used it for my own book. I wrote a book of poetry and prose. I never had it published but at least I have it. I did enter one of my poems in poetry contest a few years ago and came in third place out of thousands of entries. That poem was published in their book.

So what are you doing these days? Did you ever get married? Kids? What kind of work do you do?

Thanks for the prayers, that is the best thing anyone can do. He has been quite good to me and blesses me everyday.

How have you been? How's the baby? It's great to hear from you!! Thanks for the birthday wishes. And just how do you know how old I am?

Yea, my spirits are high. I've had some rougher moments for the last couple months from hormones but overall I'm doing well. I've had a bit more irritability and frustration but I'm working through those. I'm still incredibly happy and love living my life!! And it's wonderful NOT WORKING!! It's amazing how much better you can feel when you don't have the stress of working there.

Tell the Baltimore guys hello for me!! I still think about Woodlawn and wish I could have done more for you guys there. I was looking forward to working there and being able to provide inventory needs for the Baltimore system so you all wouldn't have to go to AJ. From what I hear, someone works out of there now so hopefully that is working out for you guys. Just sometimes I wish it was me helping you all. But I have to say I love being home much more!!

Keep in touch, it was great hearing from you!

Hi Al, great to see you stopping in! My holidays were great! I don't how far you read down on this site but I got a scooter for Christmas. I love it!! Unfortunately I haven't been able to ride it much since it's been so cold. I'm anxious to get to ride it in the spring.

I've been doing pretty good. VERY tired though. I've been sleeping a lot at night plus taking several hour naps during the day. It's cumulative from the chemotherapy.

Your Gizzie is looking good these days. The paint job looks great!!

How have you been?

I went to see my oncologist Thursday, January 20th. After advising him of how I've been feeling, he has decided not to throw in the towel on the Xeloda chemo pill just yet.

Starting Monday, he has increased my dosage to 8 pills per day. I take 4 in the morning and 4 in the evening. Each cycle is a total of 21 days. I take pills for 14 days then I get a 7 day break.

I will see him again on Thursday, February 10th.

I have a follow-up CT scan scheduled for Monday, February 7th to see if it's working.

I just found out this weekend that my dad's cancer has returned, back in the same lung where it was last time. I guess they caught it pretty early--his November x-ray looked clean, but there was a spot in December. The doc said at the time that it might be cancer, or it might be nothing--just a spot on the x-ray film. But they checked, and it's cancer. So he'll be back on chemo again. They won't use Taxol, because his feet are still recovering from the last time he used it. The doc wants to use a brand new drug that just became available within the past couple months. It's taken as a pill, like the one you're taking (but it's not the same drug, though I can't remember the name of it). But there are questions about whether my dad's insurance will pay for it. Medicare pays 80%, and their supplement with Blue Cross/Blue Shield pays 20%. But supposedly BCBS won't pay, because since it's a pill, it's considered outpatient treatment. Right.....the Taxol cost almost $18,000 per treatment, 3 or 4 treatments per month, and they paid their 20% of that. The new drug would cost just $2,200 per month, and they WON'T pay???? Doesn't make much sense, does it? We don't know yet if Medicare covers their share. My mom is ready to visit the local BCBS office and raise hell. Hopefull they'll get it worked out, and hopefully Dad will respond to the new drug as well as he responded to Taxol (though hopefully he won't have the side effects!)

What Religion is your Bra??

A man walked into the ladies department of Marks & Spencer shyly walked up to the woman behind the counter and said, "I'd like to buy a bra for my wife."

What type of bra?" asked the clerk.

"Type?" inquires the man, "There's more than one type?"

"Look around," said the saleslady, as she showed a sea of bras in every shape, size, color and material imaginable.

"Actually, even with all of this variety, there are really only four types of bras to choose from."

Relieved, the man asked about the types.

The saleslady replied "There are the Catholic, the Salvation Army, the Presbyterian, and the Baptist types. Which one would you prefer?" Now totally befuddled, the man asked about the differences between them.

The Saleslady responded, "It is all really quite simple... The Catholic type supports the masses. The Salvation Army type lifts the fallen. The Presbyterian type keeps them staunch and upright.

The Baptist makes mountains out of mole hills.

********************************************************

Have you ever wondered why A, B, C, D, DD, E, F, G, and H are the letters used to define bra sizes? If you have wondered but couldn't figure out what the letters stood for, it is about time you became informed.

(A} Almost Boobs

{B} Barely there

{C} Can't Complain

{D} Dang!

{DD} Double dang

{E} Enormous

{F} Fake

{G} Get a Reduction

{H} Help me, I've fallen and I can't get up!

Yea, Mom and Bonnie came over to bring in the New Year with me. We watched "Along Came Polly", "13 Going On 30", and "Assassination Tango". The first two I mentioned were good but the last one was pretty bad. We expected it to be good because Robert Duvall was in it but it isn't worth the time to watch it.

I think I'm catching a cold so I felt a little under the weather while we were all hanging out. But I still had a nice evening.

I can't believe I'm still up!! But I'll be hitting the sack momentarily.

I did get to ride the scooter today for about an hour. Mom and I went shopping for a few hours today so I missed the warmest part of the day to ride it. I need to get air in the tires so it rides a little better but it sure was fun! I love that thing!!

I'm really looking forward to your visit, I can't wait!! I love you!

It is a lot of fun and fortunately we've had some warm weather so I've been able to ride it a bit. If I can figure out how to get that scooter to the track I definitely plan on taking it!! It's the closest I can come to having my own hot rod!!

I took my Christmas tree down yesterday and put a lot of the decorations away. It's amazing how much bigger a living room looks once the tree is down. The pics of Dana were cute. She looked like she had a great Christmas and Santa was good to her.

I went for my follow-up appointment with the oncologist this passed Monday. He is increasing the dosage of the chemo pills. I will now be taking 7 pills per day equaling 3500 mg's instead of 6 pills per day.

He said the highest dosage is 8 pills per day but he didn't want to give me that yet. My blood counts are looking good so far and he doesn't want to "push" it by giving me the highest dosage.

He changed his mind about a CT scan after this cycle. He said if the pain in my side continues to decrease, he probably won't do another CT scan for a few months. He laughed and said it will keep me from glowing too much. LOL However, if we feel the need, we can always have one done before that.

Hope you've had a good one, with lots of family time. My parents are in town, so we had dinner at my brother's house near Savage Mill last night. We had a good time--it got a little crude now and then, but that's my family! Michelle is in Arizona, visiting her grandmother and her sister. Supposedly they have a secret family recipe for some really good cookies, so I'm hoping she smuggles a few back for me. Patrick and I had dinner here tonight. I made roast chicken (a turkey would be way too much for just two of us!), stuffing, mashed potatoes, yams....hey, that's some pretty fancy cooking for me, the king of the microwave. Tomorrow I'll be hitting the road, driving Patrick to WV for a week at his mom's house. Michelle won't be back until Wednesday evening--so I'll be all alone! I plan to take advantage of the time, fixing up Patrick's room (wallpaper, new woodwork).

Merry Christmas, Stacy!

I found out the exact size of the mass in my lung. It is now 1.4 centimeters.

Originally, back in July 2003 it was 1.7 cm's then it shrunk to 8 millimeters when I was on Gemcitabine. Since that chemo stopped working in July 2004 it has grown back to 1.4 cm's.

Here are rulers for your aid in seeing the actual size. The first ruler is metric with the centimeters.

The second ruler is English with inches so you can compare the size.

Well here's the update from my CT scan....

My instincts and ominous feelings were right.

I went to see the doctor today for chemo and took him the films from my CT scan. Dr. Hahn reviewed them and determined that the Gemcitabine is no longer working. The tumor in my lung has been growing again. The CT scan from September had shown 2 millimeters of growth since July. We don't have the official results from the radiologist so we don't know the exact total of growth yet. I should know that sometime next week.

Fortunately, the lymph nodes appear to still be in remission.

Since there is growth of the tumor, I have to change chemo drugs. Needless to say I didn't receive chemo today. I will begin a new regiment and a new drug tomorrow (Friday). The new drug is a pill and it is called XELODA aka 5F.

My new regiment is:

Six (6) - 500 milligram pills per day (this is 3000 milligrams per day).

Take 3 pills in the morning then 3 pills in the evening.

I will take 3000 milligrams of Xeloda for 14 days straight then I will have a 7 day break. This is a 21 day cycle.

Dr. Hahn wants to see me in 10 days to see how I am doing on the drug since some people have allergic reactions to it. My appointment is on Monday, December 13th.

If all is going well, then I will see him again on Thursday, December 23rd for a new prescription.

After this month I will only see him once per month for an examination and to receive the new prescription for Xeloda for the pharmacy.

If I am tolerating the drug well, Dr. Hahn said today that he wants me to go through two cycles then he will check my progress again. I am assuming that means another CT scan in two months.

The CT scan did not show anything in the gall bladder area. When I initially was diagnosed with cancer this time around, I was having pains in the gall bladder area and in my back. Since nothing is showing up in the sonogram or CT scan and the bloodwork on my liver all look fine, Dr. Hahn believes the discomfort is from the cancer. I imagine it's swelling on the rib cage. He said something about the rib cage today but I missed what he said for certain.

Thank you so much for all your prayers!! Please continue to keep me in your prayers, I certainly could use them.

Well, that's not the best news I've heard all day. But I know you'll keep going. You know, after my dad was diagnosed with lung cancer, and while he was in chemo, I used to pass along to my parents some of the things you told me, some of your experiences. My mom was very impressed with you, even though she's never met you! "That Stacy seems like quite a gal." (My mom is 73 years old, so "gal" doesn't sound funny when she says it!) And if you think about it, you did get SOME good news: at least the Xeloda is a pill, not a suppository........

Last night I saw something I did not think would occur. One of my kats (who is large and has a bad disposition, but otherwise is a pleasent...well, for a kat he is pleasent) struck a possum not once but three times and then chased him. This same kat has a business card which states: Thomas A. Kat, bird assasine.

Even though I already knew , I still wanted to read your post. I am still digesting it all. I also wanted to tell you again how great it was to see you the other night and how much I really enjoyed the time to sit and chat with you. Been a while since we had the chance to do that without 35 interruptions here at work. Please never forget I will be available when ever you may need me. I am just a phone call away... work or home! Well I started my new chemo this morning by taking the new chemo pills. Already I have to stop taking them until this coming Monday. I woke up feeling like I am getting a sinus infection so I called the doctor's office. My doctor wants me to take an antibiotic for 7 days. I am to stop taking the chemo because anytime I get sick they wouldn't give me chemo. There are supposed to be many possible side effects from this drug and they don't want a sinus infection complicating anything.

Although I am stopping already, so far I felt okay from the pills I did take. Hopefully I will have minimal side effects.

I am scheduled to have another CT SCAN this Tuesday, November 30th. It is a follow-up scan to check progress.

I've also been having discomfort in the gall bladder area. I had a sonogram done to look for gall stones, fortunately it was negative. But since I'm still having some problems, we are hoping this CT scan will find out what's going on.

Keep your fingers crossed and PLEASE keep me in your prayers on Tuesday. For some reason I'm not feeling optimistic this time so I could really use the prayers.

I am VERY happy to say that my platelet count is back up to normal!! YEA!!

I had blood work done today to make sure my counts were up so I could go to the dentist. I was happy to see that my platelets went from 65 last week to 207 today!!

I had to go to the dentist because I broke a tooth. Believe it or not I still have a baby tooth and will never have a permanent tooth to come in after it comes out. Unfortunately that was the tooth I broke. The dentist was able to repair it with a filling. I was amazed, he didn't have to numb me since it's a baby tooth. AND I only had to wait a half hour before I could eat!

Boy, the last two weeks sure have been like a roller coaster ride for me. Like I said in a previous post, my doctor's secretary passed away and I went to the funeral. Instead of a minister speaking at the funeral home, several people got up to eulogize Debbie. That was heart wrenching. Debbie was truly the sweetest and nicest lady I've ever known and I miss her.

Yesterday Good Samaritan Hospital had a "CELEBRATION OF LIFE" for Debbie that anyone that knew her, including patients, could attend. I was invited to attend so I went. It was supposed to be a positive remembrance of Debbie but it was still very sad. So many people adored her.

Today was supposed to be my 47th chemo however my platelet count was so low that my doctor opted not to give it to me. So I won't be getting chemo again until the day before Thanksgiving. That was the first time that I could not get chemo simply because of my blood counts. I'm not quite sure why but it kind of bummed me out.

This was my week to receive the Aranesp shot in my belly. Fortunately today that barely hurt at all. What a relief.

These are the descriptions of the different types of cells within the blood and the normal ranges:

Platelets – blood cell particles involved with the forming of blood clots. If they are too low and you get a cut, you could bleed to death. Normal range between 140 - 440.

RBC – red blood cells measure the number of blood cells available to carry oxygen to all cells. Normal range between 4.20 - 6.10.

WBC – white blood cells are the body’s primary defense against disease. White blood cells help fight infection. Normal range between 4.8 - 10.8.

Hematacrit – measures the volume of red cells that transports oxygen through the blood stream to all cells of the body. Oxygen is needed for healthy organs. It is an indicator of the mass of red blood cells. Normal range between 37.0 - 52.0.

Hemoglobin – a chemical compound inside red cells that transports oxygen through the blood stream to all cells of the body. Oxygen is needed for healthy organs. Hemoglobin gives the red color to blood. Normal range between 12.0 - 18.0.

These were my numbers:

Platelets - 65
RBC - 3.66
WBC - 4.2
Hematacrit - 33.7
Hemoglobin - 11.5.

I sure am anxious for tomorrow to get here. It is supposed to be a bright sunny day and I need that!! My aunts are up from North Carolina so I did get to visit with them the last few evenings. We played our card game ROOK. That is always fun!!

Tomorrow we will be going to visit my uncle on the Eastern Shore that has cancer. He has been receiving chemo and radiation so I am anxious to see how he is handling all of that. We will also be visiting another uncle later in the afternoon tomorrow that just had his gall bladder removed yesterday.

I don't know about anyone else, but I'M still around. I've been working late this week, and I've been too tired to bother much with this computer thang. I hope tomorrow is a nice day, as you say, cuz I'll be heading up to Havre de Grace for the reptile show. Michelle needs food for her snakes ("food" means "frozen mice"), but she can't go get it herself because her mom will be visiting. So I'll go, and I'll get to check out the snakes while I'm there.

It looks like I'll be having TWO Thanksgiving dinners this year. I've been invited to go with Michelle to her dad's house for dinner on Thanksgiving. Meanwhile, my parents will be in town. My sister wants to have a Thanksgiving dinner, but my brother Andy, who is a firefighter in DC, has to work on Thanksgiving. So my sister is planning to have the dinner that Friday instead. So I get Thanksgiving dinner twice--and I don't have too cook or clean up either time!

In loving memory of Debbie Nicklas. She was Dr. Hahn's secretary for many years and I've had the fortune of knowing her since 1999. We lost Debbie on October 31st, 2004 due to complications of liver cancer.

This is the obituary in the Baltimore Sun.

"NICKLAS, Deborah J. On October 31, 2004, DEBORAH JEAN NICKLAS (nee Betz) beloved wife of Richard W. Nicklas, devoted mother of Lauren Nicklas, devoted daughter of Walter A. and Ruth A. Betz (nee Swank) devoted sister of Patricia Mugrage. Funeral services will be held at the E.F. Lassahn Funeral Home P.A., 11750 Belair Rd. (Kingsville) on Thursday at 10 A.M. Interment Fork United Methodist Church Cemetery. Friends may call on Tuesday and Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M."

If you know Debbie you can view her obituary in the Baltimore Sun on-line. There is a place to sign a "guest book" for her family. This is the link, just cut and paste it and put it in the address field.

It certainly is a small world!! How long ago did you work there? Did you ever meet her daughter Lauren? Sometimes Lauren would work in the office with Debbie to help her out.

I believe Debbie found out about her liver cancer in June of this year. She had surgery to remove the cancer in the liver. They did get it all so she didn't need chemo but she had severe complications from the surgery. I don't know all the details but I was told that she was aware on Saturday when the family decided to take her off everything. She died peacefully with her family there around 1:00am Sunday morning.

Ok, so......The official government instruction is: at 2:00 a.m. Sunday, set your clocks back 1 hour, making it 1:00 a.m. So I did that. But then I noticed, an hour later, that it was 2:00 a.m. again. So I set my clock back to 1:00 again. But then, after another hour, it happened again!! And it kept on happening! At 2:00, I'd set my clocks back to 1:00, but an hour later, it would be 2:00 again. So by mid-afternoon, when it was still 1:00 a.m., I began to think that something was wrong. So I called Dick Gelfman to see if he would investigate the situation, but he never called me back. I called the FBI, but the guy kept laughing. Then I realized why--he was in on it! It's a government conspiracy! If we keep turning the clocks back, we'll never reach Election Day, and Bush will stay in office forever! Pretty sneaky, huh?

I was glad you we were able to see it. The company made watching it more enjoyable. Talk with you soon

Not much news to report, but I thought I'd say hello. How are things going?

Work is still keeping me busy. I was on vacation earlier this month, so now I have to make up for the time I was off. I haven't quite figured this out: the company says I'm entitled to 4 weeks of vacation, away from the office, but then I have to make up all the work I would have done had I not been off. Some vacation, huh?

Michelle likes the theater, so this afternoon we saw "Grease" at the Hippodrome downtown. Frankie Avalon is in the show. He gets his name in all the ads, though he only has a small part, with one song, during the show. (He sang a few after the show, also.) We went to eat afterward at a little place called Afghan Kabob. Yeah, Afghan food sounds unusual, but I've eaten there a couple times, and it's really good, though it might not match, say, barbecued ribs at the Corner Stable......

You know, that's just one of the many many things I DON'T miss about working!! I love having a permanent vacation!! OOOPS, sorry, I don't mean to rub it in....

I went to see the play Grease YEARS ago at the Mechanic or Lyric. It was okay. I much prefer the movie!! Sally Struthers played the woman in the office that always made the announcements. Geez, that was back when I was engaged in the mid nineties.

I am now the person in my community that types the newsletter. I've completed one and distributed it and now I'm working on the next one. Plus I'm trying to get on the Board of Directors for my community. I have several people in the neighborhood that are going to nominate me at our annual meeting. Just something else for me to get into... You know me, I can't sit still.

So how long has it been now for you and Michelle?

I've been seeing Michelle since January--getting close to a year. I think I'm gonna try to keep her for a while!

I talked to my dad yesterday. He had his second post-chemo x-ray last week. Same result as the last one--they didn't see any tumors. He was told by the doc that he is considered to be in complete remission at this point. There's a good chance that it will show up again some time, but for now, he's doing as well as we could hope for.

She must be something then if you're planning on keeping her!

I am so glad to hear about your father!! Someday I'll be able to say I'm in a complete remission too!! At least I sure hope I will!! It didn't seem to take long for him to go into remission. I'm glad to see that Taxol kicked it's butt!!

I suspect that there are a whole lot of people who hope you'll be in complete remission someday soon!

Yeah, Michelle's all right--for someone living in the Parkville area ;)

I GOT A FLU SHOT TODAY!!!!!!!

I CAN DO THE DANCING CHICKEN AGAIN!!

GBMC has flu shots for the high risk public. If you're not a senior citizen you need to take a doctor's note with you.

They are giving out flu shots on Thursday, October 28th and Friday, October 29th. The hours for BOTH dates are between 10:00am - 2:00pm then again between 6:00pm - 8:00pm.

Go to the main entrance of the hospital. Once in the lobby turn left and go to elevator "B". Go up to the 4th floor. Turn left out of the elevator and make an immediate right. Go down the hall to the registration area. If you're one minute late they won't give you the shot.

I found out all this information by accident today at 1:40pm. They were giving out shots today until 2:00pm. I ran out of the house and hauled butt to the hospital. I was two minutes late and was refused a shot. HOWEVER, I begged and begged and begged!! Since I had a doctor's note and was paying cash, they gave me the shot.

The shot costs $20.

After I got my shot I stopped by my oncologists office and asked for a doctor's note for Mom so she could get a flu shot also. She is able to get it since she is my primary caregiver in the event I get sick.

I found out today I may not be able to get chemo this week since I got the flu shot today. I may have to wait until next week. I will find out in the morning. I needed to get the shot last week while I was on my break week but I couldn't find anyone that had the flu shots.

I was able to get chemo today even though I had the flu shot yesterday.

TODAY WAS MY 45TH TREATMENT!!!

My doctor decided to reduce the dosage of my chemo drug (Gemzar aka Gemcitabine) from 2 grams to 1.7 grams from here on out. He's doing this because the Gemcitabine has been dropping my platelet count by the third treatment during the last few rounds. I will continue on the same regiment of once a week for three weeks then a week off for a break.

The below URLs are for web sites that can help you find flu shots. Just cut and paste the URL and put it in your "address" field to go to the site.

This web site is the CDC (Center for Disease Control):

This web site is the American Lung Association. It allows you to put in your zip code to try to find a location.

At this time I still haven't been able to locate any place in Baltimore County giving out shots. If anyone has any information or knows where shots are being given, please respond. THANKS!!

If you received a flier from St. Joseph's Hospital announcing a flu shot schedule, disregard it. It was printed before the shortage was announced. However they do update the message on the phone weekly. You can call 410-337-1479 to keep checking if you would like to.

There are limited FLU SHOTS AVAILABLE now available in Harford and Anne Arundel Counties. You must be a resident of those counties and be able to provide proof of residency to be able to obtain the flu shot.

Here's a link that you can cut and paste to check out schedules:

I went in for chemo today and found out my platelet count is the lowest it's ever been. They are only 77 so I definitely had to have the shot in my belly. Since they were so low, Dr. Hahn only gave me half the dose I normally get of chemo. I normally receive 2000 micrograms of Gemcitabine but I only received 1000 today.

I'm having body aches today from the chemo and even had a little fever of 99.1 at dinner time.

I have to be extra careful to avoid getting cut. The platelets are the ones that aid in the clotting of the blood. If they are low then I would have a hard time getting the cut to stop bleeding.

Unfortunately my doctors office is affected by the flu shot shortage. They will not be receiving any shots to give to their patients. Having cancer and being on chemo puts me in the high risk group but I haven't been able to find a shot. I had an appointment at the Good Health Center at Good Samaritan Hospital for next Friday but they called me today and said they had to cancel it. All shots were taken from them and supposedly the government will be redistributing them. I sure hope my doctors office is one of the places that get them. The nurses are telling me to be exceptionally careful to avoid sick people especially ones with the flu.

NEW PINK AND WHITE M&M's

The maker of M&M candies has teamed up with the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation to raise funds through the sale of their new "pink & white" M&M candies.

For each 8-ounce bag of the special candies sold, the makers of M&M (Masterfoods) will donate 50 cents to the foundation. The next time you want a treat, please pick up a bag (now sold in stores nationwide) - you will be donating to a great cause and satisfying your sweet tooth.

Mars, Incorporated, through its Masterfoods division and M&Ms brand pledged to donate $650,000 to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation late in 2003. To help raise awareness of the cause, Mars tied its donation to a special promotion of its M&M's Brand. The 50-cents-per-bag formulated was based on the company's goal of selling 1.3 million bags of the special pink and white candies ($650,000 divided by 1.3 million = $.50). The campaign ended when the donation cap was reached in December 2003, though some packages of the candy remain in stores more than six months later.

M&M's will repeat the campaign, beginning in September, 2004, and will donate 50 cents for each package sold to the Komen Foundation. Tentatively, they have scheduled it to run through November, but have again capped their donation at $650,000.

Here's a link you can copy and paste to purchase these M&M's online:

This year, more than 211,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 43,300 die. One woman in eight either has or will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. In addition, 1,600 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 400 will die this year.

If detected early, the five-year survival rate exceeds 95%. Mammograms are among the best early detection methods, yet 13 million U.S. women 40 years of age or older have never had a mammogram.
