I was having a lot of fun on that thing. It doesn't go very fast, only about 25 mph tops. But it's fun to ride around Dad's neighborhood on that thing. It belongs to a friend of Mark's. Dad keeps telling me I should buy one. I told him to remember me at Christmas!! He said they sell some that look like little Harley Davidson's. That would be a blast!

I got 225 bulbs planted this week. I still have another 300 to go! It's supposed to rain some between tomorrow night and Friday so I think I'll wait until after then. The ground will be softer.

I'm glad you liked the birthday post I had on here!! I got your email, I can't wait for you all to come up!! I sure hope Aunt Jo is feeling good these days. Tell her hello and I love her.

I love you and miss you!

Hi Stacy!

I'm on vacation this week. Just trying to get some errands done around the house. Obviously I can't go away for the week, since Patrick is in school. So I'm doing a lot of chores that I would normally do on weekends. Exciting, huh?

When the doc told my dad that his chemo had been as successful as they could hope, and that they couldn't find any more cancer to treat, he told him that there would be monthly x-rays for at least 3 months to make sure the cancer didn't come right back. Well, the first x-ray was last week, and it looked good. So we're all happy about that. He's slowly regaining the feeling in his feet. Apparently that Taxol lingers in the body for a long time, and it may take months for his feet to return to normal. But he's using his walker much less now. Needless to say, my mom has been in a good mood lately!

So how has your vacation at home been? It's always nice to just simply be away from work. Doing your chores early should leave you with lots of time this weekend for FUN!!! There's a car show this weekend in Ocean City plus it's Octoberfest down there too. I won't be attending either but I thought you might like to know.

Yep, the Taxol can have lingering side effects for up to a year or even longer. It took a long time for me to "recover". I have to wonder though, has your father noticed a difference in the amount of bug bites he gets? When I was on Taxol I didn't get bit by mosquitos or any insects at all. That was a wonderful side effect until last year. Keep in mind that I had Taxol in 1999 and it "protected" me through 2002. I used to get bit ALL THE TIME until the Taxol!! Gee I must have sweet blood. When spring hit in 2003 I started getting bit again. Needless to say, the drug I'm on now doesn't offend them. I get bit just as much now as I did before Taxol. Ask your Dad if he's noticed a difference. It would be interesting to know if that happened for anyone else.

My vacation activities consisted of 1) sleeping later than usual; and 2) doing chores around the house. It was NOT too exciting. But at least I got more rest than I do when I'm working.

The skeeters have always left my dad alone. Maybe it was the Vitalis in his hair, or the Viceroys on his breath (although he quit smoking 20+ years ago). So we can't tell if the Taxol provided any extra protection!

sue and i dated when we were in our 20's. we had absolutely nothing to offer each other, and we drifted apart. no hassles, just qwit caalling each other because we both thought we were staring at a dead end?
we both got married to folks that didn't work out. so 25 years later, a mutual friend, who knew we were both single, put us back in touch. he died of cancer 2 years ago. i will miss him.
but the incredible ms gresham and i have been co-habitating for almost 2 years. we almost had a fight at 11 months. since then, life continues to throw darts at us, but we continue to do the stroll. we call each other shithead, and laugh.
pinch me!
if you pinch hard enough i will marry her,- but she has to stop laughing every time i bring it up....how weird is this?
i have lived a tough life. i have regrets, who doesn't? but if the good lord swoops down tomorrow, and takes me to answer for my sins, just pinch me, i stole the cake!!LOL

i brought up the idea of marriage again tonight and before it's over she is laughing again. so i suggested she ask her mom. she said her mom would probably start laughing, too! damned the luck. now mind you it is not laughing at me, or i would throw her out of the house-- it is just laughing. seems to me this is perty serious. what is up with this?? so why would a woman start giggling and laughing when a man starts talking about marriage? it kind of reminds me of a salesman who starts grinning too much just before you close a deal...scares the shit out of me.

I guess it all depends on HOW you're bringing up the subject. Maybe she doesn't think you're serious. Or maybe the idea of that kind of a committment scares HER!! I know the idea of marriage is the furthest thing from my mind. Who knows, maybe women are changing these days and don't want to get married. I'm definitely not the right one to ask about it. Good grief, I don't even want to date anyone let alone get married. Suggest a date to go get a marriage license and see how she responds.

ok- we are on this diet. it involves a lot of vegetable soup. i called my mother today and we discussed a few things, including this diet. (i must add- i am losing weight.) we discuss costs of living, cost of insurance, cost of a lot of things. so my mother-(in all her glory)-suggests that along with marriage comes cheaper car insurance and an extra dependent on the old w-2, as well as all the other attributes of marriage. then she backs that up with her old man Howard,(married to mom,& not my father), who says that if i don't marry Sue he will? i told him the line started at the front door, and it was not short. in the meantime Ms. Sue, (the incredible Ms. Gresham) is howling with laughter..today's SOAP is- pressure from my family, (again). why is it that her family does not feel the need to say anything, but mine does? strange, is it not? the ongoing saga... Be Sure to Tune in Next week....(will she say yes?- does danersmiff know the answer? or, is he just fooling himself? the shadow knows!!)

Subject: 41st CHEMO

Author:
Stacy
[ Edit | View ]

Date Posted: 00:41:07 09/29/04 Wed

I had my 41st chemo yesterday. The nurses always draw blood first to check the counts of the red blood cells, white blood cells, hematocrit, hemoglobin, and platelets. If everything is within a decent range, I will receive chemo.

These are the descriptions of the different types of cells within the blood:

Platelets – blood cell particles involved with the forming of blood clots. If they are too low and you get a cut, you could bleed to death. Normal range between 140 - 440.

RBC – red blood cells measure the number of blood cells available to carry oxygen to all cells. Normal range between 4.20 - 6.10.

WBC – white blood cells are the body’s primary defense against disease. White blood cells help fight infection. Normal range between 4.8 - 10.8.

Hematocrit – measures the volume of red cells that transports oxygen through the blood stream to all cells of the body. Oxygen is needed for healthy organs. It is an indicator of the mass of red blood cells. Normal range between 37.0 - 52.0.

Hemoglobin – a chemical compound inside red cells that transports oxygen through the blood stream to all cells of the body. Oxygen is needed for healthy organs. Hemoglobin gives the red color to blood. Normal range between 12.0 - 18.0.

I almost didn't have chemo because my platelet count was so low. It was only 91. My red blood cells were only at 3.66, my hemoglobin was 11.8, the hematocrit was 33.9, and my white blood cells were right on the border at 4.8. You can read the normal ranges above. This definitely has an impact on how fatigued I get. Well I definitely had to have the shot of Aranesp in my belly to replenish my blood counts.

My nurse, Tracey, talked with Dr. Hahn to determine whether or not I would get chemo. He decided I would get it but only 60% of the dosage he normally gives me. Normally I receive 2000 micrograms but this time I only received 1200 mg's. That's the first time we've had to reduce the dosage. Fortunately that was the last treatment of this round so I will be on a break next week. My blood counts should recover nicely.

I guess having every fourth week off from chemo helps, huh? My dad seemed to think so. It gave him a little extra time to get his weight back up a little, regain some strength, and get his blood counts back up. Maybe you'll be strong enough to leap tall buildings in a sinle bound!

That 4th week always helps. I have been REAL tired this week so I am relieved to have this week as a break week. I called the nurses today to ask them if I needed to come in to have my counts checked this week since the platelets were low last week. They said no but I need to watch for bruising for no reason. If my platelets were down to around 50 then I would have needed to go back in to be checked.

I don't have the problem of losing weight. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not. LOL! I have definitely put on a few pounds thoughout this journey. I'd like to lose some of it but they say you shouldn't lose too much weight while on chemo. Supposedly it helps to keep weight on.

How is your dad doing these days?

My dad lost a little weight during chemo. They had him eating all kinds of things--stuff that would normally be considered fattening--to try to keep up his weight as much as possible. He was eating ice cream every evening! I'm sure your doctor is happy that you can keep your weight up. Dad is doing quite well. In fact, I had a message from my mom yesterday. She said:

Flash!!!! Pop's x-ray today showed no tumor!!!!!! The doctor was so pleased, we both got the impression he doesn't often get to give such good news. We saw the first x-ray and todays. I am glad I didn't see the first one then, I saw it today and the tumor looked huge to me!!!! But todays showed nothing!!!!! We are indeed happy. We know too, that if a single cell got away it could turn up somewhere else. but that is not on our minds, we are just going to enjoy every day as it comes.
He still has the numbness, that could take months to go away. Pop says it is just a mite better, he doesn't use the walker so much now, just if he will be walking distances without anything to lean on. In Wegmans he uses a cart, today he walked all over the hospital to have the x-ray and then hand carry it to the doctors.

This poem was written by a terminally ill young girl in a New York Hospital.

SLOW DANCE

Have you ever watched kids
On a merry-go-round?
Or listened to the rain
Slapping on the ground?
Ever followed a butterfly's erratic flight?
Or gazed at the sun into the fading night?
You better slow down.
Don't dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won't last.

Do you run through each day
On the fly?
When you ask How are you?
Do you hear the reply?
When the day is done
Do you lie in your bed
With the next hundred chores
Running through your head?
You'd better slow down
Don't dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won't last.

Ever told your child,
We'll do it tomorrow?
And in your haste,
Not see his sorrow?
Ever lost touch,
Let a good friendship die
Cause you never had time
To call and say,"Hi"
You'd better slow down.
Don't dance so fast.
Time is short.

The music won't last..

When you run so fast to get somewhere
You miss half the fun of getting there.
When you worry and hurry through your day,
It is like an unopened gift....
Thrown away.
Life is not a race.
Do take it slower

Hear the music

Before the song is over.

Once upon a time, a girl named Stacy had to have an unexpected CT scan. So sit back and relax and enjoy the story.

Not so long ago, in the kingdom of Doncaster Village, I had started walking for exercise. I had been walking about every other day for a little over two weeks. Then this passed Tuesday it was exceptionally humid but I went ahead and walked anyway. Boy it was pretty hard on me. I was huffin' and puffin' A LOT more than I usually do. Well that night my back started aching just like it did when I started having problems last year. Then the next morning I started coughing up traces of blood. Definitely not a lot but I don't ever like to see blood from coughing. My back was aching so bad that I didn't get much sleep since I couldn't find a comfortable position.

I started the next round of chemotherapy on Thursday but I had to be examined by the doctor first. I told him what had been going on and I wondered if it was from expanding my lungs so much more than usual when walking. He wanted me to have a CT scan this week but fortunately I was able to get one scheduled for this passed Friday. In the meantime my doctor said I could keep walking.

I went ahead and had my chemo. Unfortunately I had to have that painful shot again in my belly. This time my nurse, Jeanette, wondered if I put ice on the area first and numbed the skin.... just maybe the needle would be less painful.

Sounded good to me so I put ice on my belly until the skin was numb then she gave me the shot. YYYEEEEOOOOOOOUUUUCCCHHHHHHH!!!!!! DAGGONE!! I wasn't expecting it to be painful but it was AND it was more painful then usual!! We both kinda laughed and she said "guess it doesn't work". Well now I have a bruise there. That hasn't happened before. Well needless to say we won't be trying that method again.

I went in for my CT scan on Friday. As usual the nurses had a hard time getting the needle in to inject the dye into my system.

Well they finally got it in my hand. Again... YYEEOOOUUUCCHHH!!

The scan itself went fine. It only takes a few minutes. Then came the fun part of the story....

For the first time ever, I reacted to the dye they inject. As soon as she removed the needle from my hand my legs started itching. In a very short time my entire body was blood red and covered with hives. Fortunately it didn't affect my breathing. I couldn't stand laying there anymore so I sat up. They went to get the radiologist to have him evaluate me. He determined immediately that I needed a shot of Benadryl. While they were searching for a small needle I felt like I wanted to crawl out of my own skin. MAJOR ITCHING!!!! And I got real hot. Again I had to move so I sat on the chair instead of the table. It felt like forever but he finally came in and gave me a shot in the arm of Benadryl.

That's the first time I've ever had a shot in the muscle in the arm and it didn't hurt.

It took a while but the Benadryl started working. Eventually after about 2 hours I was pretty close to being back to normal. Since they were afraid of the Benadryl starting to wear off and the reaction could start all over again, they wouldn't let me drive so Mom had to come get me. They also didn't want me to drive since the Benadryl makes people sleepy. Of course I have to be different so I don't get sleepy from it... I get happy. But they wouldn't let me drive anyway. Thanks for coming MOM!!! And thanks to your boss Heidi for letting you!! What a life saver!

We finally got to leave there and I took my films over to my doctor so he could read them.

I dropped off the films at the front desk and went to sit in the chemo room with Tracey, my other nurse. I wanted to be in there in case I needed more Benadryl but fortunately I didn't.

After just a few minutes Dr. Hahn walked into the room smiling. I love it when he comes into the room and says "Stacy, you're still boring". He said that my cancer looked the same if not better. Whatever is causing the pain and blood is not from my cancer. I guess I'll wait to see what the radiologist sees other than the cancer but it's probably just from changing my routine and walking. THANK GOD my cancer isn't any worse!!

The good news about having the reaction to the dye is... my doctor said I can get away with having the CT scan without the dye so in the future I won't have to have that needle!!!! Thank YOU LORD!!

After that, we went back and picked up my truck and we went home. I ended up hanging out with a girl friend that evening and we watched movies. All in all not a bad day, just very eventful.

And they all lived happily ever after...

Well, Stacy, I guess you were just ITCHIN' to get that scan!!!!!!!!!!! I'm glad to hear that the results were good. Sorry to hear about the hives--I know that can be serious sometimes. Patrick had a reaction to an antibiotic once--doc wrote a prescription for Prednisone and said told me to give it to him ASAP, before his airways swelled up. I can only imagine the itch--must have felt like hundreds of mosquito bites at once.

Keep sharing more GOOD NEWS!!!!

Mom had an allergic reaction to Amoxicillin a couple of years ago that sent her to the hospital in an ambulance. She turned blood red and in a very short time she went into convulsions. She was at work. I was on my way to pick her up and take her to the hospital when her boss called me back and said they had to call the ambulance, they couldn't wait for me. Fortunately they did because she went into convulsions while the paramedics were there. I wouldn't have known what to do if that would have happened while she was in the car with me. THANK GOD they were there with her. They said she could have died.

Hi Stacy, I have been reading your site, but it has been a long time since I have sent a message. One thing for sure you still have that great spirit and attitude! It is wonderful the way you can make "lemonade from lemons"--that is a very, very good thing!!

As you know I have another friend that is in remission from lung cancer, and she too, shares your great spirit and attitude. Like you she goes through these terrible stressful moments, but like you she too, has a wonderful spirit.

Since Jack's cancer (it was 5 years yesterday)I have read and read and read about the disease. I have learned that a positive attitude with lots of laughing is important to remission. Therefore, everytime I read your creative and funny emails about a stressful and hurtful ( I can't imagine the pain with those injections) time I appreciate so much your attitude! I know that it is something that must be worked at, but I believe that it is helpful with healing since laughter releases endorphins-nature's own painkillers-and that helps the body heal. The Ancient Greeks knew this a long time ago as they built hospitals next to amphitheaters to benfit patients. I find that amazing!

I guess I just want you to know that I continue to cry out to the Lord for your good health, and I give prayers of Thanksgiving when you have good news. I have added Tina Schmidt to my prayer list.

Also, you have a wonderful family. Everyone should have a brother like Mark. I enjoy your animals too!! Sending our love and prayers--Bonnie and Jack

So great to hear from you!! I was just thinking about you the other day wondering if you all were okay since I hadn't heard from you.

Congratulations to Jack for reaching his five year survival date!! That is wonderful! Did you do anything to celebrate?

I have such a wonderful support group with all my friends and family that I can't help but have a positive attitude. Everyone is so supportive and positive! I am so blessed to have extraordinary people in my life! I've made new friends recently and have been enjoying the heck out of them. It's funny to me, when I try to think of adjectives to describe how I feel about the people in my life, they just don't seem to describe them well enough. Extraordinary, wonderful, fabulous, amazing... all these words aren't strong enough!!

I love my life more now than I ever have. I don't think it's because I've been facing my own mortality, I think it's because I am able to do so many things that I've wanted to do. I am on my own schedule spending time with all those that I love including my "children". I get to spend each day either outside or inside looking out the windows just thoroughly enjoying God's wonderful work. I can't explain the joy that I have inside me other than to say it tickles my inners and I have butterflies so often. It's sheer happiness. I am so blessed and I know it!! And I thank God every day for all his blessings in my life. Even on rainy days I'm happy, I know all the life outside needs a drink too.

I'm so happy to hear that your friend has a positive attitude also. It makes living life so much more delightful.

Thank you so much for adding Tina Schmidt to your prayer list. I haven't heard any more news about her, I pray that she is doing well.

I got to see Greg recently out on 895. He was sitting there in the median when I drove by. I didn't have enough time to cross all the lanes of traffic safely to stop to talk. So I drove down the road and saw another cop at the salt dome. I stopped and asked him to radio Greg and ask him if he could drive down there. So he did. It was great to see him. It's been so long. He always looks good, especially in his uniform. I was sorry to hear about his iguana though. Please say hello to him and Stephanie for me.

I continue to keep you and Jack and the rest of your family in my prayers.

Yes I do have a wonderful family. I completely and unconditionally love my family. My Mom and Dad are my foundation and that cannot be shaken. I thank God everyday for giving me the parents that I have. They "fit" me perfectly.

I 100% agree that everyone should have a brother like Mark. I absolutely adore my brother. Wow, I'm just sitting here getting teary eyed thinking about how much I love that guy!! He is so amazing to me. I pray for peace of mind and happiness for him, I want him to be as happy as I am. I can't imagine having anyone else in this world any better for a brother. I have so much pride in him. When I'm with him and I get to stand back and watch people gather around him or when I watch him in his cars... my head is held up high and my chest is bursting with pride. I am the ONLY sister in this whole world that can say "THAT'S MY BROTHER" and be talking about Mark!!

Well Stacy, I was able to get to your site today and Wow was I impressed. You could have a career in web design! Glad to hear cancer is not growing nor causing your bleeding. I give you credit for getting out and taking those walks. I have my sneakers under my desk but haven't taken a walk since early spring.

I have a shellfish allergy and am told it is probably the iodine that I react to. Do you have problems with shellfish?

Well, I just wanted to let you know that I visited your site and as always have you in my thoughts. Thanks for sharing your news. Wish I had the time to spend on the website.

Hope to see you Sept 17th for Zhongting's luncheon.

I also have to echo your friend Bonnie's sentiment. Your resilience and attitude have been so positve throughout your treatments that it can can only mean good things for your recovery. You are a role model to all of us.

Anxious for the next good news.

While I was at my 40th chemo treatment today, I received a copy of CT scan report from this passed Friday. I was slightly disturbed when I saw that the reading said that there was a tiny increase the mass from the last scan in March. It went from 8 millimeters to 10 millimeters. However the scan did also read that it could have been from a slight difference in the position of the scan and that follow up is recommended. I saw my doctor today around the office but I didn't have an appointment with him. If it were something to be concerned about I'm sure he would have said something. I'm just hoping it's nothing to be alarmed about. I should be getting another scan in December. We'll see how that one looks

We just recently found out that my Uncle Pat (on my Mother's side) has two primary cancers. He has prostate cancer and he has lung cancer that has spread to the paratracheal lymph nodes. That's where my cancer is that is in remission.

Uncle Pat will be starting chemotherapy soon although we don't have an exact date yet. He and his wife live on the Eastern Shore. I wish they lived closer so he could see my doctors. I hope that he has wonderful doctors and nurses like I do and get's the same results that I have so far.

I am asking everyone keep him in your prayers. Thank you!

My chemo on Thursday, August 19th was my 8th treatment. It was a milestone to me since it represented one chemo for each year I've been alive. It was also the last treatment in that round so this week is a break week.

I have been sleeping better but I'm still pretty tired. My Uncle Anthony was here from Thursday through Monday visiting from Missouri. He is my Mom's brother. We did a lot of running around together and I really enjoyed his visit. He is still in the area and plans on visiting again before returning to Missouri.

This Wednesday, the 25th is my Mom's birthday. We will be going to dinner with a real good friend.

These are some photos my Uncle took from my 38th chemo... THANKS UNCLE ANTHONY!!

I've been doing a lot of things lately but I've also been pretty tired. When I'm not on the go I'm napping. Fortunately I am able to get to sleep these days. Still having hot flashes but I can sleep.

I went in today to get my blood counts checked. They were borderline so the nurse left it up to me whether or not I got that shot. I chose not to. I'll wait until next week to see if they look better on their own since this is my break week.

How is your father doing now that he's off chemo?

Yea my hair is growing but it's also getting more and more curly. It will be interesting to see if it continues to get curlier as it gets longer.

Was there any tire left after those burnouts??? Very impressive! I can imagine how much you enjoyed riding along on the second one! Judging from the audio, at least one of the spectators was very impressed!

My mom called today with good news. They got the results of my dad's MRI today. The tumor in his lung is down to just a little spot--which the doc says might just be scar tissue. He won't have to go back on chemo now. He'll get an x-ray each month for the next 3 months to make sure nothing is still growing. His hair is coming back, and there has been a lot of improvement in his feet in the past week and a half. He's now getting around in the house without his walker. So we're all happy right now.

Yes, I noticed your curly hair! You might end up with a new look.....

8400 rpm, and the tire is down to the cords.... How much will new tires cost--cuz the one in the picture looks like it's ready for a trip to the recycling plant!

My dad was told at the beginning that there is no "cure" for the cancer he has. They just try to put it into remission, and if it comes back, they hit it again. (Sound familiar?) But right now, things are going as well as we could hope for.

Looks like you were having a good time! I assume you're the one giving the "thumbs up" in the 3rd picture. I was visiting my folks in western NY last week. My dad is doing pretty well. The doc took him off chemo. He has an MRI scheduled for this week, and their hoping they won't see any cancer, so he'll STAY off chemo. The taxol had caused numbness in his feet, and the doc didn't want to continue giving him that, BUT the taxol was working very well against the cancer. So they had him on taxotere for a little while. Apparently the numbness in his feet could last for months. But his hair is coming back in.

The weather was crappy up there last week. I took Patrick to the local water park on the one and only day it was warm enough to do that. We got some fishing in--caught a lot of largemouth bass. And we had a hole in the clouds Wednesday night (and the sky is VERY dark at night there), so we saw some of the meteor shower. Mostly, though, we just relaxed. But now I'm back to work! And my system was down until almost 11:00 this morning--that's NOT the way to get back into the swing of things.

Hope you're feeling good!!!!!!

TINA SCHMIDT NEEDS YOUR PRAYERS...

A friend of my brother's emailed me this message, please keep Tina in your prayers. Thank you!

My name is Rich Halsey. I am a friend of your brother Marks and I visit his page many times a day although I never post. Anyway I have been to your voy site as well and Know your battle with cancer. I am writing you this email because my sister was diagnosed with lukemia almost 3 years ago. She spent many many months in hopkins taking chemo and luckily we had a bone marrow match in the family so she had a bone marrow transplant. She was written off as 100% "cured" and has been gaining strength ever since. Last week she went to the doctors with what she thought was a common cold and after some blood tests, it was discovered that the luekemia is back again. Its a new mutation that they have just discovered in the past few years and now the battle begins again. I wanted to ask you to mention her name on your board and ask that as many people as posibble please pray for her and put her on as many prayer lists that we can. Her name is Tina Schmidt, she is 38 years old and has a 14 year old daughter that needs her very much. Please keep her in your prayers and I thank you in advance.

I start the next round of chemo tomorrow. I am so glad I was on a break this week, I really needed it. I have been so tired but I'm having trouble getting to sleep. I went to bed around 10:30 last night and laid awake for HOURS. At 4:00am I decided to just get up and "putsy" around the house. At 8:00am I laid down for about two hours until my phone rang and woke me up. I refused to lay back down just hoping that I will actually be able to get to sleep tonight.

Last week I went in to the doctors office to have my blood counts checked. They were the lowest I've ever seen them. So I had to get that shot. It's starting to get fairly painful even in the tummy. I asked my nurse to give it to me on the right side of my tummy and it still hurt. She said the next place we could try would be the fatty area below my hip. Yikes! But if it gets bad enough, I'll try it!

My chemo treatment tomorrow will be the 36th treatment I have received.

I found out today at chemo that one of the people that I enjoyed talking with died from his cancer at the end of June. I hadn't seen him in a while but I figured it was because I switched from Friday's to Thursday's. What a shame, he was such a nice man.

Chemo went well, my blood counts were back up. I do have a headache though. The doctor prescribed Ambien to help me get to sleep at night since I've been having so much trouble. He also prescribed something for all my HOT FLASHES!! I dropped off the prescriptions but I won't pick them up until tomorrow. I was too drained to wait for them. I am just so tired. I really need some sleep.

Mark, come hell or high water, I will be driving RATTRAX!! That is just so much fun for me, I wouldn't miss that for nothing. Unless you change your plans I have every intention on being there!!

All the arrivals are doing well. One of my female turtles has laid two eggs. I don't know which one yet. It would REALLY be cool if they hatched. Supposedly it's really tough to hatch turtle eggs in captivity. I won't know for about 100 days if they hatch or not.

Come down anytime, remember to let me know so I can get some chicken for you. By the way, I got a new stereo system that I need your help with. It's four different units plus two speakers that all need to be hooked up together. I'm not good with that stuff and I know you are. So whenever you can get down here, would you please help me with that?

Love you too!!

I started my next round of chemo this passed Thursday. I asked my doctor about how I would know if I was in remission. He said I already am in a partial remission since the lymph nodes are undetectable. I suspected that but it was really nice to hear those words come out of the doctors mouth. It's one thing to think it but it's another to hear it from the horses mouth.

He also said that there isn't much cancer left to go into remission. The mass in the lungs in only 9 millimeters in size. That tumor is considered "inactive" right now. For now we are trying to control it so it doesn't get any larger. We are looking for it to become undetectable as well but as long as it is contained like it is now, that's a real good thing!!

I asked him about another PET Scan. That is a scan to detect cancer in other areas of the body. He said since I have responded so well on this drug, if the tumor in my lung isn't growing then chances are it isn't growing anywhere else either. SO... unless I become symptomatic or the tumor increases, I won't have that test. However I will continue to have periodic CT scans to check the progress of the tumor in my lungs.

Without coming right out and saying it, he did remind me that this is still very serious and it could take a turn for the worse at any time. I AM stage IV which is the worst stage but I have mastered the success of the category I am in. Meaning I am doing exceptionally well.

For now we will continue the same regiment of chemo once a week for three weeks with a break week in between the following three weeks and so on... And I will remain on the same drug.

Stacy,
I hope you are getting good news each week. Impressive XTerra pictures, I'll be sure not to tailgate them. Where'd you get the Bench seat Racing sticker? I had a near miss a few weeks ago myself, I was waiting for a diagnosis on PNH tests, and like so many conditions it I could check "yes" for 7 of 10 symptoms, fortunately the entire staff of UPMC is still stupified & mystified, no PNH. I'm going to try getting off medrol the next doc's visit. If there's no diagnosis, maybe I shouldn't be on the drugs...
Keep an eye out for Jennerstown Speedway on dodge weekly racing, that's my current home track. E

Geez, I've been busy lately, and haven't had much chance to get to my computer. Patrick was in WV, visiting his mom for a week, so I wasn't home all that much while he was away. (Spent a lot of time on your side of town!) And I've been working a lot of extra hours. So, let's see......

First of all, I'm glad to hear that the treatment is going well! I know that the situation could change, but it sounds like you're doing as well as anyone could have hoped. But please TRY to avoid those trucks on the Beltway!!!!!!!!

My dad is no longer on Taxol. I guess the doc figured that the numbness in his feet was enough reason to discontinue that drug. So he's on something else now, though I haven't been informed of exactly what it is. His feet are still numb, so he's still using his walker to get around. Hopefully they'll return to normal before TOO long. My folks were somewhat disappointed, since the Taxol seemed to be working so well against the cancer. I'll be going up there a week from Saturday, staying a week, so I'm sure I'll find out more. I've passed along information that you've given me--my mom says it has been helpful, and accurate, and "That Stacy is quite a gal!"

Michelle and I went to Ocean City last weekend. The weather wasn't too good, but we had a good trip anyway. We did go swimming for a little while, but we also walked on the beach, hit the amusement park on the pier, took a speedboat ride (saw dolphins up close), and we went parasailing! Neither of us had done that before. We have pictures from our trip (mixed in with pictures from the trip Patrick and I made to OC earlier this month) on our photo web site (http://www.mshipke.com/photogallery).

Continued success in your treatment! One of these days, I'll have to buy you a fuzzy navel (with grenadine) somewhere.....

Dear Stacy,
Your note on the 10th sounded very encouraging. You have shown so much courage and spirit. I do not think I could be so brave. We played rook at Toni's last night Aunt nancy was partners with Evelyn, so naturally they won most of the games. I was partnered with Nadine. Everyone says Hello to you. I love you, take good care. I am so jealous!! I wish I could play Rook more often than I do. Especially with all of you!

Thanks for the words of encouragement. It hasn't been too difficult walking in my shoes. There have been so many positives that have come out of it. I have my moments but only from discomfort from the chemo. Like this passed chemo has caused A LOT of pain in the joint in one of my fingers. It's nerve pain and boy it hurts like crazy for a few seconds then it goes away. Then it will come back then it goes away. I couldn't stand it if it were constant pain but thank GOD it's not!! Aleve really helps it.

Other than a few problems with chemo, it's really been a positive experience for me. I've made some wonderful friends, I've met some really cool people, I don't have to work anymore, I don't have THAT stress anymore, I get to be in my garden whenever I want, I have time to spend with all of my four-legged children, when you and Aunt Nancy come up I have a lot more time I can spend with you, I can go have lunch with Mom whenever I want, I get to watch my soaps when I make the time, and so on and so on!!! Thank GOD I have excellent benefits from Verizon Wireless. A lot of things are possible for me with them. It may have been an extremely stressful job but it did give me great benefits. There was a reason to endure all that stress.

Isn't it amazing??? This is the damage to my truck after being rear-ended by an 18-wheeler!!!! It was an empty 48 foot covered wagon (for hauling gravel, sand...) not including the cab! Nissan makes one heck of a truck!

I had an estimate done on it and the cost is about $1200. So far it's considered an open estimate because they couldn't open the back hatch. Once they get it in for repairs they will put it on a lift and also get the back hatch open to see what other damage could have been done. I also can't move my seat back -n- forth.

Just thought I would share with everyone that I was in an accident today... I drive a Nissan X-Terra and I have to say that I am shocked at how well that truck held up in the collision.

I was rear-ended by an 18-wheeler today on 695 going eastbound right after the on-coming ramp from Dulaney Valley Road. A small car, actually a Cooper, was coming off the ramp and was attempting to get into the slow lane even though a large truck was there. The roads were wet, he may have been sliding. Anyway, the large truck was laying on his horn and was trying to avoid hitting the Cooper but he couldn't go anywhere because I was there in the middle lane. Suddenly a piece of metal flew out in front of my truck and I slowed to avoid hitting it. I was already slowing down since I was afraid the other two vehicles would wreck. Evidently they did and the metal came from the Cooper. Well as soon as I saw the metal I slowed down and then KAABAAAMMMM!! The 18-wheeler behind me slammed into me. I pulled off the road and he pulled up behind me. When I got out and saw the damage on my truck I was amazed. There is damage but nothing like you would think it would be with a big truck hitting your vehicle doing at least 40 mph. This is what kind of truck it was:

There was actually minimal damage on his truck from MY X-Terra. Once again, the BIG MAN upstairs was sitting on my shoulder. I sure hope HE doesn't get tired of watching out for me. That could have been a nasty accident. I asked the truck driver if the truck was loaded and he said NO. That was actually the reason he hit me. Since he was empty when he hit his breaks he slid right into me.

Fortunately, other than back and neck soreness, wrist aching, and a headache I'm fine. THANK YOU LORD!!

Well here's the funny part of the story... I was actually driving home from a reptile store. I had just picked up a Gecko. So I was driving home with a Gecko in my car which reminded me of the Geico commercial... "everybody was Kung Fu fighting".

I went to Good Samaritan Emergency Room just to get checked out especially since I had the headache. Since I didn't get the chance to go home first, I took the Gecko with me. And I took her into the ER with me. She was in a box so no one could see her. Well when I went into Triage, the nurse asked me what was in the box. I showed her and she fell in love with my Gecko. She had quite a few nurses come in to see her. I've never had such quick service in an ER before. I was in and out of there in less than an hour!! And I believe it's because everyone wanted to be near the Gecko to see it. The Physician's Assistant that was caring for me was telling one of the doctors about the "Gecko Girl" and her Gecko so I asked the doctor if he wanted to see my Gecko. He smiled, said "yes I do" then when he came into my cubicle he said "but that's supposed to be my line". I cracked up!

I heard on the news that it was real bad in Harford and Cecil counties. Did your place get flooded? I hope not!!

When I was in the accident the roads were damp. It had rained about an hour before that but it wasn't raining at the time of the collision. At least I didn't have to stand outside in the rain exchanging information!!

I'll be taking pictures as soon as I can catch that Gecko out of her hiding place. They are nocturnal so unfortunately I don't get to see much of her. I'll probably be developing pictures this weekend. I'll be posting pics of my Collared Lizards too!

Thanks for the birthday wishes! I'm sorry I didn't write sooner--I've been having computer problems here at home.

I had a nice weekend--we checked out the tall ships in the harbor. Unfortunately, one of my relatives in western NY died Sunday morning. It was a bit of a surprise--she was 86 years old, and she'd been in a nursing home, but she wasn't "sick" at the time. I drove up there today for the viewing, and came back this evening (640-some miles round trip). It's been a long day!

I'm sorry to hear about the death in your family. Is she an aunt? That was a long trip to make in one day!

How are you doing otherwise? Still liking the "new" position? I guess it's not so new anymore but how is it going?

I'm having different computer problems now. Something's up with my anti-virus program--it's keeping Windows from starting. I can start my computer step-by-step IF I don't start the virus program. I need to talk to my engineer brother-in-law about it....

The death in the family was my dad's cousin's wife. She was the "matriarch" of the western NY branch of the family. We've been close to that side of the family for years. That's where my parents moved when they retired--Dad's cousin sold them a portion of his property, and they built their house there. I've gone up that way almost every summer for 30 years now. Yes, it was a long drive--645 miles, round trip. I left at 6:50 a.m. and got home at 9:30 p.m. My NY cousins had heard that I would be making the trip in one day, and they all made a point of thanking me, so I was glad I went.

I'm on vacation this week. Patrick and I are leaving tomorrow morning for a couple days in OC. Hopefully the weather won't be too crappy--doesn't look like it's going to be perfect.

How about a Taxol question for you? My dad is having problems with numbness in his feet and weakness in his legs--to the point where he is using a walker. The docs did a bone scan and an MRI, and didn't find anything, so they think it's the drug. They gave him 2 weeks off instead of just 1, and he says it feels a little better. He's going back this week, and they may consider a lower dose, or a different drug. My parents aren't too thrilled with the idea of a different drug, since the current program has been fighting the cancer very effectively. Have you ever heard of that side effect?

Hi Cliff. About the numbing from Taxol... that is a very common side effect with Taxol. I had numbing and tingling BIG TIME in my hands and feet. It was so bad in my feet that I about busted my tail getting in the shower. I'd have a hard time "feeling" the floor so I would slip. Fortunately I never fell. My hands were so bad that I had to stop all crocheting and other crafts. It was very difficult to write and/or type too. With each treatment, it got worse and it went higher up my arm. Fortunately I only had four treatments but I suspect it would have gotten worse. Once I went off the drug all numbing and tingling wore off but it took a while.

Tell your Father that it's a common side effect but a huge nuisance. It will wear off after he's off the drug but it may take a while. If they keep him on the drug long term it can cause some nerve damage meaning he wouldn't get complete feeling back. Suggest a lower dose. He could also try Aleve to help.

Another side effect that he may encounter could be nail loss on his fingers and his toes. That may or may not happen. If he starts having problems with his nails, get a small bottle of Tea Tree Oil. I found it to be the cheapest at Safeway. It's not cheap, particularly at GNC. Anyway, just use a Q-tip or cotton swap and smear it on his nails. It stinks but it really helps the nails. I didn't have that problem on Taxol although a lot of people do. I did have the problem on Taxol's cousin Taxotere. My chemo nurse suggested the oil and I tried it.

Have a wonderful time on vacation with Patrick! I did hear it's supposed to rain Monday. UGH!

I left a flier at my doctor's office hoping to generate conversation about cancer with people that need or want to talk about it. I am re-posting some of topics of the flier below. Several friends and family members have been telling people they know with cancer about this site so I'm hoping to hear from them.

For newcomers, please feel free to express anything you need or want to. There is a lot of things on this site that isn't about cancer so don't feel like your posts wouldn't be appreciated. Cancer related posts are MORE THAN WELCOME!! I really want to try to help with advise or in any way I can or at least I can lend an ear.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF MOUNTAIN
By: Stacy R. Preston

Do you have cancer? Or does a friend or family member?
Patients, Caregivers, Friends and Family members alike, we all need support from time to time.

This web site is based on my journey through cancer and how I'm living my life with it. Friends, family, and myself post messages about whatever is going on in my life and/or theirs, my cancer updates, the trials and tribulations of side effects and humorous items. It is NOT a chat room, it is forum based.

If you or someone you know is walking in cancers shoes, I am willing to try to be supportive. I have stage IV metastasized breast cancer to the paratracheal lymph nodes and right lung. I am currently undergoing chemotherapy on the drug Gemcitabine (aka Gemzar). I was on Taxotere first but I was switched to Gemcitabine. I was initially diagnosed with breast cancer in the left breast and one axillary lymph node in July 1999. I was diagnosed with the recurrence in July 2003. If it matters, I am 38 years old. In 1999 I was on the drugs Adriamyacin and Cytoxin then Taxol. And I went through 6 weeks of radiation. I have had eight surgeries and I have a port-a-cath for the chemo IV. I am Dr. Davis Hahn’s patient; he is out of Good Samaritan Hospital. I am hoping you could benefit from my experiences.

Do you need to vent? Do you just need to talk? Do you have a funny story? Do you want to tell your story about how cancer has touched your life? Do you want someone that is going through cancer to give you insight? Do you have questions or concerns? I am hoping I can provide some kind of support for you.

Sometimes we laugh, and sometimes we cry, but through it all we have a different kind of mountain to climb. I am someone that truly understands all that is behind the word cancer, from day one and the overwhelming time of hearing the word cancer, through the waiting for results period, to the treatments, and recovery periods and the recurrences.

All cancer patients, caregivers, friends and family members are welcome.

I will respond to all posts and messages. If you're not comfortable posting messages here, please email me!

It was good to see you too. I would have stopped but I was getting aggravated with the "traffic" situation there. I hadn't moved for a while, everyone was waiting for someone to move that Explorer. That's when I got out and hollered over to you.

I found Mark the next day. I didn't see him that night. I had a delivery to make to him but I just waited until I saw him on the 4th. I just went on home. I've gotten hooked on almonds and I wanted to get to the store to get some.

HI AUNT NANCY!! Mom is excited about coming down to North Carolina to see you! I picked up Annie this evening AFTER Mom and I went out for steamed crabs. YUMMY!!

My yard looks GREAT in my opinion! A lot of neighbors have made special trips around the back and side of my building just to see what I've done. Everyone says they love it and that it looks beautiful in comparison to how it looked before.

A lady in another building asked me to come clear away the brush and weeds from behind her building too. AND SHE WAS SERIOUS!! I told her not to be too surprised if she sees me over there. She told me I could have some of her ground cover plants too. I feel so good when I get to be outside gardening. I've lost a few pounds out of it so that's always a good thing! I end up with more energy when I'm out there. I haven't been able to tolerate the sun since I had chemo in 1999, I'm so glad that I'm able to tolerate it now.

I can't wait for you to see it. I planted some bulbs recently for flowers that come up in the fall. I had to plant them in May or June to be able to see them in September. I'm looking forward to seeing how they do.

My petunias and marigolds haven't done too well. It's because something has been eating the leaves and te flowers. I'm afraid to put a bug killer down since some of the neighbors let their cats run around outside. I don't want to make any animals sick or kill them so I'll just know not to plant them next year.

I can't wait to see you!! Of course, I'm looking forward to playing Rook so don't let the ladies make Mom sick of it. LOL!!

I'm looking forward to you getting to meet all my new critters. I'm having a lot of fun with them! I think Mom is too. She comes over after work to pick up Annie and sits upstairs with me watching them.

I love you and I'm happy that I don't have to miss you too much longer!

Happy 4th of July Stacy. Your yard sounds beautiful. I guess you have used your washer and dryer by now. Your Mom was telling me how bad your old ones were. We all had a nice time at Evelyn's last night. Your Mom and Debbie beat Evelyn and I 2 out of 3 games. Your Mom is sleeping right now. She was very tired after trip and us sitting up and talking. I sure hope she is sleeping well. So good to see her. I can't wait to see you soon. It won't surprise me if you go over and do that lady's yard for her. We were talking about your critters last night. Sounds like they are ver interesting to watch. I know your Mom already misses you and her Annie but seems to be glad to be here. She said you took her out for crabs the night before she left to come here. She said they sure were good and how much she enjoyed being with you. That was so nice of you. We don't know what we will be doing today yet. Hve to wait to talk with your Aunt Jo. You take care. Love you and miss you, Aunt Nancy

I took my CT scan films over to my doctor today. He said there is NO CHANGE. That's great news because that means the lymph nodes are still undetectable and the mass in my lung has not grown any. He said that we will continue on the same regiment and the same drug. YIPPEE!!

This is my doctor... Dr. Davis Hahn, Oncologist at Good Samaritan Hospital:

My blood counts looked good enough that I didn't need to get the Aranesp shot. All in all a good day at the doctor's office.

I had my CT scan today. All went well other than they collapsed a vein when they stuck me. That's not unusual with my veins. They are very delicate after having chemo.

I don't know my results yet and I haven't really looked at the films. I'm too nervous to. I'm supposed to see the doctor next Thursday, July 8th but I'm a little too impatient to wait that long. So I'm going to try to get in to see him tomorrow to see if he has time to read them for me.

Since I have been SO tired lately, I need to go in tomorrow to get my blood counts checked to see if I need that shot. It's been two weeks since my last one. My nurse told me last week that if I was real tired to come in and get checked this week.

I'm hoping to have news tomorrow to post.

Hey girl, whatcha been up to lately? How was your week? Michelle and I took a cruise from the Inner Harbor to Annapolis on Wednesday. The weather was crappy, but it was a fun trip. Patrick's birthday was Thursday--but I did his "birthday dinner" tonight, since it involved cooking out on the grill. Made his cake myself, too (with a little help from Duncan Hines). How are things going with you?

That cruise sounds like a good time. I did something like that YEARS ago out of the inner harbor but it was a huge sail boat.

Tell Patrick Happy Birthday for me. Yea, all my cakes are compliments of Duncan Hines or Betty Crocker too.

I have been so incredibly busy lately. I've done more clearing out back and more planting. I've extended the planting passed the lady's place that is in front of me. I've had another neighbor ask me to clear out behind her place. She said I can have some of the ground cover plants that she has. I told her not to be surprised if she sees me back there.

I am now the proud owner of several different kinds of reptiles. I found a male box turtle one day while clearing and the family has grown since.

I've also found two female box turtles. "Charlie" has been mating with one of them (Gert) in the last week so I'm expecting her to lay eggs within a couple weeks. I have two Eastern Collared Lizards, several Anoles, American Toads, Fire-Bellied Toads, and Green Frogs. All of these critters are in three different tanks. One tank is for moist conditions, one is for desert conditions, and the last one is for natural conditions. It's been a lot of fun. "Charlie" LOVED the cicada's when they were here. Unfortunately for him now he has to settle for beetles and crickets. It sure was a lot easier for me to catch the cicada's then anything else. AND cheaper. I've been spending all of my evenings at dusk catching lightning bugs for the toads. Then after dark, I've been going under all the lights in my unit catching beetles for the toads and the turtles. All my neighbors probably think I'm nuts. It's funny though, one of the lady's that knows what I'm doing has been out catching lightning bugs for me!! I must be bringing out the kid in everyone around here!! It's been fun.

The dogs have been highly entertained by all the new critters. Chessie especially. It's fun watching her bark at them and watching them through the glass.

I'm in the process of trying to refinance my house so I've been doing leg work for that.

I finished this round of chemo this passed Thursday and this week is my break week. I've had a fair amount of nerve pain with this round in my arms and hands. I took the Aleve for it but it didn't help too much like it did before.

I have my CT scan this coming Thursday to check progress.

Top Fuel driver Darrell Russell was fatally injured today as a result of a crash during race eliminations at an NHRA National Event at Gateway International Raceway.

Russell, 35, of Hockley, Texas, was competing in the second round of eliminations when his dragster went out of control and crashed just past the finish line. Russell was extracted from his dragster by NHRA emergency services officials and transported by air to the St. Louis Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.

Russell, driver of the dragster owned by NHRA legend Joe Amato, was the event's top qualifier and was coming off a victory recently in Columbus, Ohio. During his four year career he had earned six victories in 17 final rounds. He posted a career-best fourth place points finish in 2003 and was currently fourth in the Top Fuel points standings.

NHRA deeply regrets that this tragic accident occurred and sends its thoughts and sentiments out to the Russell family.

I started my third round of the new regiment of chemo last Thursday.

Things went pretty well. I took some Advil before I went and fortunately I felt better after getting the saline flushes. Hopefully that will help in the future. I also didn't get a headache this time.

Fortunately my blood counts all were within normal range so I didn't have to get that shot.

I asked my doctor about getting a CT scan soon. He was going to hold off until late in the summer but I expressed concerns that he considered good points so I will have a CT scan on July 1st.

Hey there, Stacy. I've been somewhat out of touch with the world, or at least with part of it. Had a problem with my system here--something, somehow, got into my Internet Explorer program and f***ed it up. I had trouble accessing a lot of sites, including e-mail. I had "expert advisors" in the family giving me suggestions, but tonight I decided to ignore them and try my own idea. I uninstalled I.E.6 and reverted to the prior version--and it worked. So here I am....

I talked to my dad today. He's doing well. Having a week off from chemo every 4th week seems to work well. It gives him a chance to recover somewhat from the fatigue, to get his blood counts up, and to put a little weight back on. He said he still has a little hair, and he hasn't lost his mustache!

Patrick is out of school for the summer. He's ready to be LAZY--which means he won't be too happy when I assign him more chores! Tomorrow he has a choice: he can cut the grass. (That's his only choice.) I have a few other things in mind for this week also. I'm taking a day off on Wednesday. Michelle and I are going on a day cruise from the Inner Harbor to Annapolis and back. It's run by Harbor Cruises, and I assume it will be on the Bay Lady or the Lady Baltimore, the two big dinner cruise boats out of the Inner Harbor. It should be fun.

I hope the chemo is going well!

Hey Stace - Have been really busy between work and all the work we've been trying to accomplish at the house. Plus Bob and I took a trip to Florida to check on both Dads. But, none is really a good excuse for not keeping in touch better.

I have appreciated you keeping me in the loop on your progress. Those are some really nice pictures of you and the family (even the doggy members!) Reminds me that while in Florida, Greg showed me that he had put all the old family movies on CDs, and we watched all the ones having to do with Christmas. There was one Christmas while we still lived in VA when all of Preston aunts, uncles and cousins came. You were just a toddler and Mark was pretty little. It was fun to remember just how we looked so many years ago!

My dad was not in good shape while we were there - but is just as stubborn (and sometimes just downright idiotic) as ever. He is still on dialysis, and probably will be for the rest of his life, 3 times a week. He looks very old for his almost 76 years (which isn't so old by today's standards). He fell over the curb the day we got there and it took Bob and I both to get him up off the sidewalk. He then proceded to get 3 skin tears the next day - who knows how, but I ended up washing clothes, blankets, the kitchen counters, etc. He does not remember to take his medicines on times, can't do his blood sugars, or see to draw up his insulin. His diet is a nightmare - nothing like any diabetic diet I've seen, tho' I tried really hard to keep him on track while we were there. It wasn't unusual for him to sneak into the kitchen and fill his robe pocket with donut holes when he thought I wasn't looking. The rest of the time he expected me to fix his meals, and generally wait on him hand and foot. I feel sorry for Greg having to deal with him now that I am back home!

Anyway, the rest of us are fine. The Bryan and Christian are working hard and trying to squeeze in a bit of fun now and then. I manage to see them about once a week. My grandaughter is a beautiful 1 1/2 yrs. now, and I just can't seem to keep from spoiling her rotten (oh, how my mom would tease me about that!)

Hope all goes well with this next CT scan, and while I know you like your long hair, your short "do" is cute!

Hang in there,

Terri

PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN

Apology to Arabs

(Author unknown - sentiment shared.)

For good and ill, the Iraqi prisoner abuse mess will remain an issue. On the one hand, right thinking Americans will abhor the stupidity of the actions while on the other hand, political glee will take control and fashion this minor event into some modern day My Lai massacre.

I heard some Arabs and Muslims are asking for an apology. I humbly offer mine here:

I am sorry that the last seven times we Americans took up arms and sacrificed the blood of our youth, it was in the defense of Muslims (Bosnia, Kosovo, Gulf War 1, Kuwait, etc.).

I am sorry that no such call for an apology upon the extremists came after 9/11. I am sorry that all of the murderers on 9/11 were Islamic Arabs.

I am sorry that most Arabs and Muslims have to live in squalor under savage dictatorships. I am sorry that their leaders squander their wealth. I am sorry that their governments breed hate for the US in their religious schools, mosques, and government-controlled media.

I am sorry that Yasir Arafat was kicked out of every Arab country and highjacked the Palestinian "cause". I am sorry that no other Arab country will take in or offer more than a token amount of financial help to those same Palestinians.

I am sorry that the USA has to step in and be the biggest financial supporter of poverty stricken Arabs while the insanely wealthy Arabs blame the USA for all their Problems.

I am sorry that our own left wing elite, our media, and our own brainwashed (from elements of our society like radical professors, CNN and the NY TIMES) masses do not understand any of this. I am sorry the United Nations scammed the poor people of Iraq out of the "food for oil" money so they could get rich while the common folk suffered.

I am sorry that some Arab governments pay the families of homicide bombers upon their death. I am sorry that those same bombers are brainwashed thinking they will receive 72 virgins in "paradise."

I am sorry that the homicide bombers think pregnant women, babies, children, the elderly and other noncombatant civilians are a legitimate targets.

I am sorry that our troops die to free more Arabs from the gang rape rooms and the filling of mass graves of Dissidents of their own making.

I am sorry that Muslim extremists have killed more Arabs than any other group.

I am sorry that foreign trained terrorists are trying to seize control of Iraq and return it to a terrorist state. I am sorry we don't drop a few dozen Daisy cutters on Fallujah.

I am sorry every time terrorists hide they find a convenient "Holy Site". I am sorry they didn't apologize for driving a jet into the World Trade Center that collapsed and severely damaged Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church - one of our Holy Sites.

I am sorry they didn't apologize for flight 93 and 175, the USS Cole, the embassy bombings, the murders and beheadings of Nick Berg and Daniel Pearl, etc....etc!

My father has Parkinsons disease he is has the most quickest form of this disease. In the past year he has gotton really bad. He is unable to control his bladder & has a catheder has trouble walking & has to walk with a walker. You really cannot understand what he is saying he speech has dropped drastically in the past couple of years. I'm just thankful he hasn't given up. There is no cure for this disease. He has also had a few strokes with this which as you know doesn't help at all and all this and he is only 60 this all started when he was 52. So he is still very young to be in this condition & trust me this is unbearable sometimes to see him like this. I have faith that God will take care of him in the best way possible. Now that I've written a book. Talk to you when we get back have a great & safe weekend...

Since you left this message I've been praying for you and your family. That has to be so difficult for you to see your father like that. I can't imagine what that's like. Hey Stacy! I hope all is well. It looks like you babies enjoyed the cicada's. It's a shame they aren't going to be around much longer. Yeah right! I just wanted to drop you a quick line to let you know I'm thinking about you and praying for you. Take care!

I think I'll be ready for them to leave when it's time. I'm glad they aren't here every year. Zoie has gotten to a point that she wants to eat them and I won't let her. She's managed to eat two of them so far that I know of.

I noticed your mom has her house up for sale. Where is she looking to move to? Is Kim moving with her?

Tell Bobby hello for me. It's been YEARS since I've seen him!

Thanks for dropping in and for all the prayers!

My son tried to eat one the other day. He played around with that thing for about a half hour and then decided he was going to try to eat it. He would walk away from it and come back, it was too funny! It's one of those things, I guess you would have to be there to appreciate. LOL!!!

Yeah, Mom is moving. She's not real sure where she's moving too, though. Kim moved out and is living in Fallston. I'll tell Bobby that you said hi. He's doing well.

No need to thank me for the prayers, they will continue to come your way.

Take care!!!!

HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY

I HOPE EVERYONE IS HAVING A SAFE AND FUN HOLIDAY!!

So far I've spent my weekend doing quite a bit. I played BINGO Friday night to help raise funds for the American Cancer Society. The nurses from chemo helped to sponsor it. It was a lot of fun but I didn't win a thing!

Then I went to my fathers house on Saturday and spent about four hours cleaning my X-Terra. Thanks to BIG BRO for helping out!

Today I did all my shopping with my mother.

Tomorrow I will probably spend the day cleaning or just hanging out at home since we are supposed to get some nasty storms in the afternoon.

They haven't been keeping me up at night from the noise, HOWEVER, they have been keeping me up from all the fun I'm having watching them molt! AND from catching hundreds of them off my front wall and porch. It's funny, my neighbor has started calling me the CICADA PAPARRAZZI (sp?). I've been taking pictures of them also but most haven't turned out since I've been getting too close to them.

I haven't had any stew LOL but I wouldn't be surprised if Dad wanted to try them!!

YES THEY ARE NOISY!! The internet says they don't make any noise at night, well I can say YES THEY DO!! Just not as loud. I didn't notice if there were any at your house when I was up there Saturday, are they "infesting" your place too?

My mom called me this evening. My dad had a scan on Friday to check the progress of the chemotherapy. The doc gave them the news today--and the news is GOOD! The main tumor has shrunk by about half, and the small spots that showed up previously are virtually gone. Obviously we're all happy about the news. My dad has been handling the chemo pretty well, so now they don't have to think about changing to a different drug that could have different effects. And of course, now he can go to his treatments each week KNOWING that it's working, instead of just HOPING that it's working. Mom said that Dad has been very optimistic throughout the treatment, and he said ahead of time that the scan would show that the chemo was working--and he was right.

THAT'S WONDERFUL NEWS, CLIFF!! I am so happy for you and your family. Your father must feel so much relief. Even if he was optimistic I'm sure there still was a little fear that it wasn't working.

I couldn't respond to your email so I responded here. I'm having problems sending emails although I can receive them. I have this issue every once in a while and can't figure out the problem.

I posted Patrick's picture below the pictures of my babies. You'll have to show him. As much as I think they are interesting and don't mind them landing on me, I don't believe I could do what he did!!

Subject: HAD CHEMO TODAY

Author:
Stacy
[ Edit | View ]

Date Posted: 00:49:02 06/01/04 Tue

I finished my last chemo of this round today. Next week is a break week. Today was also the day I had to get the shot in my tummy. It actually stung today. I wasn't too happy about that but I'm hoping if we switch to the right side of my tummy next time it'll be better. I wasn't expecting it to hurt today.

The last few times I've had chemo I've noticed that I'm starting to feel funky when the nurses flush my port-a-cath with saline solution. It's strange, when they flush it, patients can actually taste a metallic taste. I taste it real strong and sometimes can even taste it throughout the week. At first I thought it was the Heparin that was starting to bother me but we figured it out today that it is the saline. It doesn't really make sense since the chemo drug has saline in it also and it doesn't have the same effect on me. It makes my stomach burn a little bit, I get a little headache, and I just feel a little "fuzzy" for the rest of the day. I lose my appetite after chemo because the burning turns to a little bit a nausea. The nurse said she would keep an eye on it and if it gets worse she will ask the doctor if we can just use sterile water to flush the port. Always something....

The nurse also said that she wonders if part of the problem is actually psychological. There is a condition called "anticipatory sickness" that chemo patients can get. For instance if someone knows that the chemo drug they are on will cause them to feel nauseas, that person can start feeling sick before they even get to the doctors office. They may even vomit as soon as the needle goes in but before the chemo drug is administered. My nurse is wondering if psychologically (subconsciously) my mind is starting to get tired of going through chemo and my body is starting to react to it. I suppose it's possible. Today was my 29th treatment. One could get tired of it after a while. I don't want to get "tired" of it because I know it's my only hope for recovery and remission and I want to have the most positive attitude about the whole process that I can.

When I got home today I was really beat so I had to lay down for a couple hours. I'm glad that I will be on a break next week.

Ever feel like this?

You know, when I first read your message I thought it said I had a "trying" day, LOL. Well, it was both "trying" and "tiring".

Thanks for the vote of confidence. Usually I feel like I do pretty well but sometimes this whole thing can be a pain. Not knowing FOR SURE what the outcome will be. I have every intention of beating this thing!! On the other hand I like not having to go to work. Most people say "wouldn't that be okay though? If you have to work then you know you're doing really well." Well yes, I'd love to be really well but I don't want to have to work either. I've gotten pretty used to doing things in my time. Getting up when I want, doing what I want, when I want, and so on.... I'm not lazy nor unmotivated, I just really like the "retirement" life!! I'm sure it has a lot to do with my positive attitude.

Wanna come do some landscaping at MY house? With all that free time, maybe you could do some painting and wallpapering here, too!

Just thought I'd fill you in.... My dad is doing well so far with his chemo treatment. He's getting a bit more fatigued, but I know you said that it's something that builds up as the treatment goes on. He complained of headaches last week, so the doc ordered a brain scan. Fortunately, they found no cancer. (I heard a rumor that they DID find a brain.) He'll be getting scanned soon to check the progress of the treatment. My mom will probably be a nervous wreck, waiting for the results.

On the home front, Michelle and I went on a brunch cruise yesterday on the Clipper City, 2-masted schooner out of the Inner Harbor. We were out for 3 hours, though it didn't go too far--just looped around the Patapso off Ft. McHenry a ways. We actually SAILED. I helped raise the mainsail--geez, that was WORK. That sail--and the big fat wooden boom attached to the top of it--was HEAVY. The food was good, too. And there was a nice, cool breeze out there! We got a lot of good pictures.

Hope your treatments keep working!

Nah, I don't think so, LOL. Trust me, I have quite enough to keep me busy here, no free time here. Dad and Mark are the painters, not me.

I am so happy to hear that your father is doing well with his chemo treatments. I was really really really really nervous when I had an MRI on my brain to see if the cancer had spread there. THANK GOD it didn't!! I think that is the worse place to have it, just in my opinion. I would be so afraid of that. THANK GOD your father didn't have it there either. As for your mom being nervous, I really believe it is so much easier being the patient. I don't know how well I could handle it if it were someone that I love that had to go through all this. I'm sure she will be very nervous waiting for the results. How about your dad? Is he just going about his business living his life or has it really affected him emotionally?

My dad seems to be his usual self. A couple weeks ago, he came home from chemo to find a broken water heater, and he replaced it himself. Having a week off after every 3 weeks of treatment seems to help. After the third week, my mom has said he seems very tired. Then he perks up again. And he still seems to have his usual sense of humor! He's doing pretty well for someone 78 years old.

I'm so glad that your father is doing well both physically and emotionally. Like my nurse says... "as long as you wake up on this side of the dirt today, it's a good day!" She also believes and so do I that cancer patients need to continue to "live" their lives. It really helps in their attitude.

My parents were upset that they missed my niece's high school graduation last weekend--their first grandchild to graduate. But that would have been a 300+ mile drive, and dad wasn't really up to it. But other than that, he's doing a lot of his usual stuff. I think he tries to pretend that there's a big "S" on his chest, and a cape on his back!

Did you have your electricity when you got home from work this evening? I never lost mine. I think it's because our power lines are underground. Unless something happens to the main box I pretty much so get to keep it.

Go ahead and complain, it's still an inconvenience I'm sure!

Stacy,
I just got back today from a week in Florida for training. There were just a couple when I left on Monday however, while I was away, the real invasion came. I remembered the distinctive sound they made from the '87 event, but I don't remember anything like what greeted me when I arrived home today. Maybe it's worse because I live way back in the woods like the toothless hillbilly that I am but I could actually here the sound of the cicadas once I departed the pavement and started back on the gravel lane toward my house. As I got closer, the sound got louder. When I actually pulled the car into the driveway and opened the door, the sound coming from the forest all around me was positively deafening. This is a really unique event but I hope they don't stay around too long. I've only been home a couple of hours and they're already driving me nuts!!! There is no escape from the noise. Even inside with all the doors and windows closed, I can still here them very well. Did I mention they are very LOUD?

So how was training? It must have been really hot in Florida.

I live backed up to woods also and it is quite loud here too. The documentation that I've found on the internet say that the cicada's are quiet at night. WELL NOT HERE!! As I sit here at 2:07am, I am hearing them sing what sounds like "pharaoh" out my window. I've actually had them land on me and start singing.

So other than training in Florida, what else have you been up to?? Which office are you working out of? Are you still in Chantilly?

Poor Tyler, he was so afraid of the cicada! He didn't want anything to do with it!

Look at that expression!

Mom had her surgery today at 9:00am. Me and my Aunt Nancy took her to Upper Chesapeake Hospital in Bel Air. She did really well with the anesthesia and the doctor said that when he did the procedure on her foot, the bones went into place just like he was hoping. He was correcting problems from her previous two surgeries. She has two pins in her toes; one in the big toe and one in the next toe over. She's having a little pain but it's tolerable she said. Keep your fingers crossed and pray that this time it was done right and she won't have to go through it again.

I started my next round of chemo yesterday. That went well and I even got to watch "THE PRICE IS RIGHT". My doctor seems to have decided that I'm going to get that shot once every two weeks instead of only if I need it. So needless to say I got that shot in my stomach. The ONLY thing I felt this time was the cold alcohol rub before the shot. Tracey, my nurse, is great at giving that needle!!

I talked to the doctor about how much I've been doing lately especially all the yard work. I told him that I've been feeling a lot better and less fatigued from it. He isn't putting me on any restrictions, he said I can do whatever I want as long as I feel up to it and I rest when I need it. Oh yea, he did put me on one restriction.... he said it's okay to go to the race tracks but it's not okay for me to race. LOL!! He said it's all I'd need is to wreck and make my white blood count go haywire. I laughed, I thought that was funny. I enjoy watching but I never race.

I also found out it's okay for me to be in the sun. Usually if you're on chemo you have to stay out of the sun. The specific drug that I'm on doesn't cause photosynthesis with the sun and cause me to burn any quicker or worse. The only concern they have, which they would have with anyone, is they don't want anyone to get skin cancer.

So I'm free to do what I want with the doctors blessing!!

Did the doc give you permission to do the Mexican hat dance? If he did, I'd like to take some pictures.....

You never race at the strip. But on the highway, now that's a different story. Tell your mom I said hello, and I really hope that this is the last she has to endure. Glad to hear you're still on course with your health.

Then you must have a problem reading speed limit signs. As far as I know right now I'll be here Friday. It looks like by myself.
