Today was my LAST CHEMO in 2005. It went well, there was a full house in the chemo room and I knew a lot of the people. So it made for a nice day.

I get my CT scan on Wednesday, January 4th to check tumor growth or shrinkage. I see Dr. Hahn on Friday, January 6th for the results.

Sure hope I get good news for my birthday (which is the 10th).

I went for my CT scan today. I hope the results are positive too. I pray for miracles all the time for me and all the people I know with cancer. I get nervous each time I go now. I see my doctor this Friday and should find out the results.

I appreciate everyone's concern and support!!! Thank you!!

My New Years was quiet. I spent the evening with my Mom and Aunt Nancy until about 11:30 then I went home. I watched the ball drop with my youngin's. My Dad called at midnight, he usually does on New Years. I'm glad you enjoyed yours.

...or is it, Happy Gnu Year! Well, whatever....

Did you enjoy your New Years Eve or did you crash early? Beverly and I were invited to a gathering at the home of my old friend Vince, near Chestertown on the Eastern Shore. As with every gathering at Vince's place, there was good food; he's a good cook, and he is especially fond of seafood. He made a great oyster stew. We left about 10:30, though because we wanted to "ring in the new year" with Bev's brother Rick. He has ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease), and it's quite advanced. To be honest, Bev is afraid he won't make it through this year. She said we could stay at Vince's house until midnight, and stop by to see Rick on the way home, but I thought it would be better to spend more time there. Bev said that Rick always liked oysters, so Vince let her take some oyster stew for Rick! We had a toast at midnight, and then watched a DVD of the Cream reunion concerts in London last year. So all in all, it was a good New Years Eve.

Hey, this is my FOURTH post on here tonight!

Hi Stacy

I had a very enjoyable day. Patrick had a great Christmas: on Friday, I took him to get his own uniform and protective gear for kendo, and later that day, his new sword--not expected until next month, because it was a special order--arrived by UPS; he got a new cell phone (from me) yesterday. He was quite happy. I went to Beverly's parent's house Saturday evening for their gift exchange. She's one of six kids, all of whom are now in their 40's and 50's, so with all the grandkids and guests, it was a big gathering. We had dinner with my family yesterday. One brother couldn't be there, but the rest of us were there. For some strange reason, my siblings seem to think that I enjoy certain alcoholic beverages! Where could they have gotten that idea? I got some GOOD beer, and a bottle of Jack Daniels.

What did YOU do yesterday? Do you have some pictures to post for everyone?

It sounds like Patrick made out pretty well. I'm glad to hear you were happy with your gifts!

My Dad cooked the chicken and gravy and I cooked all the vegetables. Mom baked the rolls and Aunt Nancy brought the apple pie. We stayed here all day eating and opening gifts. It was a really nice day. Of course you know me, I loved being with my family the most.

The pictures taken didn't really turn out well. I should have used my regular old camera, non-digital. It's much more forgiving of light and shaky hands.

I went to chemo today. My white blood cell count was up high enough that I could get chemo. They weren't as good as before but they were still good enough. They were 3.5. My red blood cells were 3.81 so I got my Aranesp shot to help to replenish them. Normally I get that once every two weeks but I've needed it three weeks in a row now.

Let's see if I can start another record of consecutive treatments.

I feel good but I'm really tired.

Well my chemo record has finally come to an end. I couldn't get it today because my counts were too low. My white blood cells were only 1.6 which means I am highly susceptible to catching infections.

When my nurse saw how many times I've received chemo in a row she was surprised. She said "nobody ever makes it that far without a break". That impressed her. She said "with your counts that low you need a break". And I agree. She asked me if I've been real tired lately and I said yes. It's because my red blood cell count is low too. So she gave me a shot for that.

I'll go back next Friday and try again.

Sorry to hear you missed your chemo this time around, but, apparently, it's not a big deal, and you did quite well to get it for as many consecutive weeks as you did. You missed chemo, and the Colts lost this weekend--two long streaks came to an end, but the Colts are still probably the best team in the NFL this year, and you're still going to kick some butt, right?

I'm glad to hear that, because I never got that dinner and car cruise with you over the summer! I might not let you make any excuses next year!

Are you ready for Christmas? I THINK I've got most of my shopping done. My brother Paul was due in from Texas today, so we should have the whole family together this weekend. It's going to be a tough one for my mom, since it's the first Christmas without my dad, but she'll be surrounded by her family, and I'm sure that's the best thing for her. I was off work today, and for the rest of the week (using up the last of my vacation time!), and I'm hoping to get some work done on her apartment. Patrick is planning to continue with kendo--and I'm happy about that--and he wants the standard robe and the armor now. I may take him to get that on Friday. If we get it, I'll send you pictures--it looks really cool.

Hey, my visitor counter says that's I'm the 10,000th visitor!

I went for chemo today. I didn't have any trouble getting my truck out or driving. Everything went well. My doctor is happy with my "collateral veins” in the chest that will carry the blood back to the heart since the vena cava cannot. He could see the veins and he said they will get bigger but they seem to be working some since I don't get as swelled up.

I also told him what Dr. Fowler said about my hands shaking. Dr. Hahn said that it IS from the radiation and it's very common since I had radiation to the brain. And it will never go away. It probably won't get worse but it won't ever get better either. He also said my light-headedness could somewhat be coming from the chemo but mostly because I have that blockage in my chest. The circulation isn't as good as it should be. The light-headedness will improve as the veins get bigger and can carry more blood.

All in all it was a good visit.

We didn't get much snow here, only about 2-3 inches at best. Whewn we left for work,it was wet or slushy on the roads.

My eyes still swell if I sleep in the bed all night. Eventually it does mean that I should be able to sleep without swelling. I slept in the bed last night and my right eye is pretty swollen. Sometimes I just HAVE to sleep in my bed. Sleeping in the recliner gets hard on the low back and hips.

We got about 3 inches here. It looked more like 4 on my truck though. I drove Aunt Nancy and myself to chemo. It was fun. Bellbeck Road is always a mess so I enjoyed driving on that road. Every place else was just wet.

Jack and I enjoyed the photos from your backyard. I especially enjoyed the old building in the woods and the birds. Like you, I enjoy the snow. I love watching it come down, and I like it when it stays on the ground but the roads are clear. I never was one for a Winter where the weather would be warm, cold, rainy and all of that. I like snow and cold--not a great change in temps. Maybe we will get more snow this Thursday. Stay warm! Bonnie

Whaddaya know--I'm the first one here since your chemo last week! Sounds like the chemo is going smoothly for you. Your counts have been pretty good for quite a while now. I hope things stay like that, and I hope the Navalbine is doing its job well.

What do you think of our little snowfall this evening? Patrick is mad--based on the earlier forecasts of 3-6 inches, he was hoping school would be closed tomorrow. But then, we're in Anne Arundel County, and the forecast IS for more snow in the southern part of the county. So maybe he'll have the day off, or he'll have a 2-hour delay. We have some real snow wimps making those decisions--they dismissed the kids 2 hours early today!!!!!

I LOVED WATCHING THE SNOW!! I always do! It's so pretty watching it come down when you have woods behind you. AND I don't have to worry about cleaning off my car until I'm good and ready SINCE I'M RETIRED!!!

Yea, things seems to be going well with the chemo but I won't really know if it's working until I get another CT scan. I don't know when that will be.

I did wake up this morning with a little bit of a sinus infection. I called the doctor because I want to nip it in the butt before it drops to my lungs. So he prescribed an antibiotic. Hopefully it won't get any worse.

I don't know html, so I don't know how to post a picture on here. If I did, I'd post some nice pics of Beverly's house and property, taken in the snow today. Guess I'll just have to e-mail them to you. Her house is quite old; the "new" part--the addition--dates to about the 1880's. The original stone portion is older than that, though the actual age hasn't been found yet. I've seen the house on two different web sites, in articles about the Baltimore and Frederick Turnpike (now known in Baltimore County as Frederick Road, running through Catonsville and Ellicott City). The first site, http://www.route40.net/history/mdpikes.shtml is a history of the turnpike; Beverly's house is not the one in the foreground in the old picture, but rather the next one behind it. (The photo dates to approximately the 1890's, and yes, that's a horse and buggy at the toll gate.) The other site, http://www.monumentalcity.net/streets/milestones/ is about the old mile markers. Scroll down to the photos of "Frederick 9;" Beverly's house, as it looks today, is visible in the photo on the left.

You've been on Navelbine for a while now--must be close to 3 months, right? Can't be too much longer before the doctor orders a scan.

No, I'm going tomorrow to chemo. I met a really neat lady last week on Friday so I changed this week to Friday so I could see her again.

I did go to see Dr. Fowler, the radiation doctor. I had a follow-up appointment with him. I told him about my hands shaking and that they are worse than they were when I saw him the last time. He said it doesn't come from radiation but then again I'm not common. I figure if he thought it came from the seizure or the Stevens Johnson Syndrome he would have said so. He said if it continues to get worse or if I get a headache that won't go away to let him or Dr. Hahn know. They would send me for an MRI of the brain. He doesn't want to do an MRI right now because they probably wouldn't do anything about whatever they would find right now. I'm not sure how to take that. Remember how I told you it's worse when I try to do something like hold a fork or a pen? He said that's like Parkinson's Disease. I'm not sure if he's concerned that's what it could be or if he was just giving me an example. Hopefully it won't get any worse.

I got to see Deana tonight. She says hello.

I also told him how I still get light-headed when I bend over and stand back up straight. I also still get light-headed when I kneel and get up. He said that's normal. I'm not sure if it's from the radiation but I think it is. There's a "trigger" in the brain that tells your veins to clamp up quickly so that blood doesn't rush to the brain. He said if that's off even by a second then you'll get that light-headedness. He said mine has been affected and that's okay. It's normal for that to happen. But I don't know if that will ever go away. At least I'm normal in one area. LOL!!

I met two really nice couples in chemo yesterday. Betty and Carl was one couple. She's fighting lung cancer and doing well. They told me they have a half pug/half boston terrier mix. How could I not make friends with them?!?!

I also met Donna and Paul. She is fighting breast cancer and seems to be doing well also. They go to the church that I was baptized in. Small world.

The week before I met Kevin and his mother. Kevin's mom is fighting cancer but I'm not sure what kind. They were very nice also. Kevin used to be a police officer in Bel Air, the town I grew up in.

If any of you are reading this, know that I am praying for you and I really enjoyed meeting you.

Hi Stacy--glad you're keeping up on the chemo. I hope the Navelbine is kicking some cancer butt!

We had Thanksgiving dinner at my brother Doug's house in Savage. My mom was there, of course, since that's where she's staying until we have the basement apartment at my sister's house ready for her. My sister, her husband, and 2 of their 3 kids were there. My brother's roommate was there, and I brought a certain guest with me. We had good food, and good beverages--my brother cooked, and I brought the beer. It was our first big holiday since my dad passed away. We talked about him--often humorously. My mom didn't seem too emotional--at least not on the outside.

Hi Stacy...You may have seen this inspirational message. I hope it lifts your spirits. I hope you and your family had a happy Thanksgiving.

Cancer is so limited, it is only destructive if we let it be;

It cannot cripple love,
It cannot shatter hope,
It cannot corrode faith,
It cannot eat away peace,
It cannot destroy confidence,
It cannot kill friendship,
It cannot shut out memories,
It cannot silence courage,
It cannot invade the soul,
It cannot reduce eternal life,
It cannot quiet the spirit,
It cannot lesson the power of the resurrection.

Thinking of you, Stacy! Jenny :)

Hi Stacy! Hope you're doing well this week. I've been busy at home and at work. Are you ready for Thanksgiving tomorrow? Patrick is in West Virginia, visiting his mom, and I'll be having dinner with some of my family.

Speaking of Patrick--he got STRAIGHT A'S on his report card! Needless to say, I was very happy, considering the fact that he carried a C+ average throught his first two years of high school.

WOW!!! Straight A's!! That's wonderful!!

I'm doing okay. Since the doctor raised my dosage, I've been extra tired and sleeping a lot. And it still affects my taste and appetite.

My family will be having dinner at my house. Dad will cook the chicken and gravy, Aunt Nancy is bringing pies, Mom will do the rolls, and I do the rest.

What are you doing for dinner?

Hi Stacy, Yes, I am still here, but I have not checked in as I should have. It has been busy here as with everyone this time of the year.

Jack and I have had our grandchildren as they are out of school this week. That is always fun, but it keeps us busy. We did some decorating for Christmas which they really enjoy.

We are having Thanksgiving at Gregory and Stephanie's house. They had it last year also, so maybe they have decided to have it every year. Our older son and wife always have Christmas as they have two children. However, next Thanksgiving and Christmas there will be a new baby so maybe everything will change. Jack and I let the kids decide what they want to do and where, and then we go there.

It is always good to hear that you are "out and about" with your family. The race pictures are great. Are there any races over the holiday?

Have a great Thanksgiving and eat lots of turkey!! Love and prayers, Bonnie

Hi Bonnie. I was starting to worry about you since I hadn't heard from you in so long. I'm glad you're well though.

I hope your Thanksgiving is wonderful at Greg's place. Please wish your family Happy Thanksgiving for me!

There are a few more races this year but I wait to hear from my brother as to whether or not he wants to go. It starts to get TOO cold. The cars don't run as well either. They tend to break easier.

We have chicken for every holiday. Dad cooks it and does a great job!! I pretty much do everything else. We always have holiday dinners at my house.

I'm so glad to hear from you!! HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Twas The Night Of Thanksgiving

Twas the night of Thanksgiving,
But I just couldn't sleep.
I tried counting backwards,
I tried counting sheep.

The leftovers beckoned
The dark meat and white,
But I fought the temptation
With all of my might.

Tossing and turning
With anticipation,
The thought of a snack
Became infatuation.

So I raced to the kitchen,
Flung open the door,
And gazed in the fridge
Full of goodies galore.

I gobbled up turkey
And buttered potatoes,
Pickles and carrots,
Beans and tomatoes.

I felt myself swelling
So plump and so round,
Till all of a sudden,
I rose off the ground!

I crashed through the ceiling,
Floating into the sky
With a mouthful of pudding
And a handful of pie.

But I managed to yell
As I soared past the trees...

"HAPPY EATING TO ALL! PASS THE CRANBERRIES PLEASE!"

I had my 13th chemo today and the 10th in a row of the Navelbine. Since I've been tolerating the chemo so well, he has decided to up the dosage from 35 mg's to 40 mg's each week.

My white blood cell count was 4.9 and the red blood cell count was 3.86.

Next week I go on Friday since Thanksgiving is Thursday.

Wow 13 in a row! Thats great! How do you think you'll react to a higher dosage?? Tired, the same,no difference?
Crabs were delicious last night! I was stuffed...I ate 5 jumbos and that bowl of soup..I was ready for bed!
Me and dad went over to the Hideaway Lounge on Middle River Rd. to listen to Country Music. They have a live country band every wednesday & sunday night. They are pretty good!

I don't know how I'll do on the new dosage. Hopefully no different. But I sure was beat when I got home. I HAD to take a nap for a few hours. I fell right to sleep!!

That nerve pain in my foot kept me up most of last night. It moved into my ankle too. When the pain hit it would make my leg jump all over the place. It's hard to sleep like that. The "other" problem is still there also. My doctor gave me another prescription for that.

Yes, those crabs were great. The soup could have been a little less spicey but it was good. I graduated to 4 crabs! The last few times I could only get 3 down.

I thought you guys were going to listen to karioke. Who was the band?

Pearls of Wisdom for those touched by cancer

You may hear that "attitude is everything." Accept that you won't always feel positive; you will have bad days, and that's all right.

Let others help. It can be therapeutic for them and you.

Learn as much as you can about your cancer and its potential treatment. Knowledge will give you a better sense of control over your disease.

Do things just for you: read the comic strip section in the newspaper; indulge in a long, luxurious bath; learn some relaxation techniques.

If the idea of a support group doesn't appeal to you, consider keeping a journal. Writing down your experience can be therapeutic and healing.

There's no such thing as a stupid question. Your medical team members are trained to answer your questions; they won't know that you don't understand something unless you ask.

Make plans for the future. Whether it's planning a weekend getaway or planting a garden, plans give you hope and something positive to anticipate.

You're not alone.

Well hello there. Are you finished helping your brother get the house done?

Chemo went fine last week. They've been checking my clotting time every week since I'm on a blood thinner. It was low last week so I had to take more coumadin for one day. When it's low, it clots too fast.

The week before I had them check my cholesterol because when I had the Steven's Johnson syndrome, they took me off all my medications. It came back 211 so I got permission to go back on my cholesterol med (Zocor). I had a few days of aching, I'm assuming that's from the Zocor.

Who's the new lady?

When I asked Uncle Anthony how big they get; I'm guessing by how big around he made his arms that they get as big as snapping turtles.

The turtle that I'm holding is fairly nice. It's not crazy about being held but at least it lets me hold it and look at it. When I try to pick up the other turtle (the one with the hump on it's back), it tries to bite me. I don't know if it would hurt or not but I don't care to find out.

I was able to get my 10th chemo today. I know it's Wednesday but we had to change it from Thursday this week.

My white blood cells were a bit low at 2.8 but they were good enough to get chemo.

My red blood cells were a little low also at 3.91 so I was given the Aranesp in my IV. That's the shot that hurt like crazy. Thank GOD they can put it in the IV now.

After my chemo, I went over to the Good Health Center at Good Samaritan and got my flu shot!! I am so glad I didn't have to rush around this year. And I'm very glad I got it!!

By the way, if anyone is having a hard time finding a place to get a flu shot, you can call the Good Health Center at Good Samaritan for an appointment. I can tell you it may take a month for them to get you in but at least you'd have an appointment if you can't find one some where else. Their number is 410-532-4100. Tell the person that answers the phone that you want to schedule a flu shot. They aren't in the Health Center but they make the appointments. Good luck!

How is the swelling. Are you able to sleep in bed or are you still on the recliner? I know that your dogs like both!!!

Not much new here. I am having some dental work done YUK--not my favorite thing, but I need to make visits now and then! Jack arrived home after visiting and helping his cousin in Ohio after open heart surgery. We have just been staying home watching the rain fall!! Of course that is better than the snow that is falling in Western MD!

Does your friend get her Aranesp in her arm or her IV?? How is she doing?

I sleep okay. I keep waking up in 2 hours after I go to sleep. I have to get up to go to the bathroom. I never had that issue before. Last night it was the same. Then I woke up again at 5:30 and got on the computer for a while. I discovered Little House in on that early too. Then I decided I would sleep in my bed for a while. Me and the babies got up at 10. Boy that felt good to sleep in the bed. I do feel rested no matter where I sleep though. My dogs sleep wherever I do. It's so cute!

Yuk, dental work. I hate even having cleanings done. I have sensitive teeth so it's not fun for me. I'm glad to hear Jack is back. How is Greg doing? I haven't seen him in ages.

Since the weather is calling for sun, Mark and I WILL be going to the race track!! I am so excited. It may be cold but I don't care! He offered to let me race his car at the track but I declined. I don't want to be responsible for anything happening.

Hi Stacy, Great news---sleeping in bed. I bet you did feel more rested---dogs too!!

My friend gets the Aranesp in the IV. Like you she stays away from the veins whenever possible. She was encouraged last week at her visit with the doctor. He wants her to take one more chemo treatment--number 9 in this series--since the tumor marker that was up is now down in the normal range. Then after the last chemo and testing he hopes to put her on the pill Tarceva (not sure of the spelling). She did well on the pill Iressa and the same company makes both. After awhile she stopped Iressa though because it was so pricey. Through her doctor she will be getting the Tarceva free. She too, had trouble waking in the night. Now she takes a Tylenol PM before going to bed, and that has helped. Sometimes she takes two before bed if it has been a bad day.

Gregory and Stephanie are doing well. They are pregnant. It is very early, but they couldn't keep the good news. I think that you knew that they miscarried awhile ago. So needless to say they and all of us are excited. We just pray that all will go well this time. The baby is due in June. I will keep you posted. Casey, our 11 year old granddaughter is so excited--it is fun to watch. No one gets to tell the good news as she beats us to it! She and Ryan are ready for a cousin here. They have some in Pittsburgh, but don't get to see them often. I have a feeling that Casey will move in with Gregory and Stephanie when school is out!!!! She will be a great baby sitter.

Great news too, that you will be able to go with Mark to the races. Have a great time and weekend!!! Love and prayers, Bonnie

Glad to hear you had your chemo this week. How's the swelling as of today?

My sister and her husband sold their old house and bought a house in Glen Burnie--both settlements were on Monday. The place in GB has an apartment in the basement for my mom. I was there for the first time today--and there's a LOT of work to do. We painted the living room this afternoon. That house may keep ME busy for a while, and I don't even live there!

Hey Stacy

Glad to hear you're looking like YOU again. When I was on her the other day, I looked at the picture of your face when it was swollen, then scrolled back up to the picture of you with your family. I guess it would have been hard to recognize you. I'm glad that wouldn't be such a problem now! Are you still sporting the cue ball look, or is the hair starting to come in? I don't recall my dad losing hair with Navelbine, and I don't recall reading that it was a typical side effect.

I really don't mind helping on my sister's house. We have a close family (like yours, only bigger!), and besides, there's work to be done upstairs before all the stuff can be moved out of the basement so we can start on my mom's apartment. MAYBE she'll be in by Christmas, but I'm not sure of that.

Yea, Navelbine is one of the drugs that allows hair to come back in. I lost my hair from the radiation and the Steven's Johnson's Syndrome. It takes longer for the hair to start coming back in when you've had radiation on your brain.

But it is starting to come back in. I still look like a cue ball but with a little fuzz. It's going to have A LOT of gray and it's acting like it's going to be even curlier than the last time.

I've been seeing on the news that there's a chance of rain for Saturday, of course. Hopefully that will change!!!! I want to go to Cecil County for BSR day!!!!!!!

Hello Big Brother!! Yep, I was able to go in for chemo. It was the 6th in a row!!

Dr. Hahn said if my clotting time comes back the same today as it has been, he will call me and tell me to cut back on the blood thinner. It's just a little higher than it needs to be but that's not a bad thing. I just don't need as much. I was going in twice a week for the "pro-time" blood work. That's the clotting test. He changed it to once a week now. That's great news because the nurses have to stick me in the arm for that. They can't use the port for that test.

I'm a little tired but I feel pretty good. I'm chilly but I feel okay.

I seriously doubt we'll be going Saturday. Will it be rescheduled to next Saturday?

Glad to hear that you're still getting your chemo. Obviously the white cell count is back up. Now you can let the Navelbine do its thing. I was glad to hear that the cancer hadn't advanced since you've been on it. Now that you're getting it consistently, hopefully you'll start seeing the tumors shrink soon.

Enjoy the day---it is to be 75 degrees with no rain. I bet your pepper plant is doing well. Mine is with all the rain that we have had. It is incredible that we have not had a frost yet. I am hoping that the weather stays the way it did a few years ago---mild until Christmas. Love and prayers, Bonnie

Being a Christian is like being a pumpkin. God lifts you up, takes you in, and washes all the dirt off of you. He opens you up, touches you deep inside and scoops out all the yucky stuff --
including the seeds of doubt, hate, greed, etc. Then He carves you a new smiling face and puts His light inside you to shine for all the world to see.

I saw the doctor on Monday....

One thing is for sure; the blockage is definitely a clot and not the cancer. The tube from the port goes from the subclavian vein into the superior vena cava vein. So that means the clot originated from the port. Now there is a complete clot (blockage) in the vena cava. That is the main vein that takes blood back to the heart.

My doctor consulted with other doctors and concluded that the best thing to do is continue me on the blood thinner for a little while. They do NOT want to remove the port because it could do the same thing again. Plus there is a good chance they would not be able to get another one in there. Once the vein is blocked, there is “scar tissue” that builds up. If that were the case, they would not be able to get another tube in there. And even if they put the tube into the jugular vein in the neck, there would still be the blockage in the vena cava.

There is a good chance the clot will never go away since it is so big and I will have the scar tissue. What will happen is… the body develops “collateral veins” in the chest that will carry the blood back to the heart since the vena cava cannot. This process can take up to four months. Fortunately, I am already seeing veins under my skin around the shoulders. Maybe this will be a quicker process for me.

My nurse told me that this is actually a rare scenario. Normally when a patient has SVCS (Superior Vena Cava Syndrome), it is from their cancer progressing. It is not often that it is from a blood clot. Of course, once again I have to be different. It seems when I am in the unusual category… it is the best-case scenario. Thank GOD for that.

This is a diagram that I edited to try to show you where everything is. Pardon the unprofessional editing. I’m not good at it.

My doctor told me that if I try to sleep in an upright position like in a recliner, it might help with the swelling. So, every time I nap or sleep, I sleep in my recliner WITH all three dogs. The swelling in my face and eyes is so much better. It is amazing.

I go back on Thursday hopefully to get my next chemo.

As you know, I have been having a lot of swelling. This is a shot of my face just from this morning. It is not the greatest since it was from a digital camera.

I went to Good Samaritan yesterday to have my CT scan. My doctor wanted me pre-medicated with steroids and Benadryl since the last time I had to have one with dye I had an allergic reaction. So, I started pre-medicating at 7:00pm the night before, then again at 1:00 am, then lastly at 7:00 am. I had a total of 150 mg’s of Prednisone and 50 mg’s of Benadryl in me. I went in for the CT scan and was delighted to find out that they could use my port for the dye. The other place I go will not do that.

I lay on the table and they give me the dye. Then they do the scan. As soon as the scan was over my feet started itching. Then my ears got real warm and started itching. I was having an allergic reaction even though I pre-medicated. I had to get an injection of 25 mg’s of Benadryl. One of the nurses came in and told me that once you have an allergy to something, every time it get’s worse. Therefore, I would probably have to be hospitalized for the next one with dye. Great! My arms, back, head, ears, and feet were bright red and itchy for about an hour at the most then the Benadryl kicked in.

The hospital does not give out actual copies of films anymore; they give you a CD to give to your doctor if he wants to review the scan. So, Mom, Aunt Nancy, and me went up to see Dr. Hahn. I gave him the CD and the August films. He left the office and went to review them with the radiologist to make sure he got a good reading even without the official report.

He came back with the news. It is not the greatest news but it is the best-case scenario out of the options.

I have a blockage in the Superior Vena Cava. What that means is the main vein that carries blood back to the heart is blocked. That is what he thought it was originally but he didn’t know if it was from the cancer progressing and blocking the vein. On the other hand, if it was a blood clot possibly originating from my port-a-cath.

If it were from the cancer, then I would have had to have radiation to my chest. That would NOT be good. I would probably end up hospitalized with breathing and eating problems. If it were from a blood clot then he would try blood thinners to break it down. He also was concerned about giving me chemo until it was all resolved.

Well, he came back and said it was a clot and we would continue me on the Coumadin blood thinner. The cancer has not changed since August, which means it has not grown any. Thank GOD!! He said I would probably end up with purple lines on my chest from the blood having to take different routes back to the heart. He said think of I95 and Rt. 1 both being closed. You would have to find another way home on back roads. I already have the lines and I still have remnants of the rash from the Steven’s Johnson’s syndrome.

This is a diagram of the heart:

A. Superior vena cava
B. Pulmonary aorta
C. Left atrium
D. Left ventricle
E. Right ventricle
F. Inferior vena cava
G. Right atrium
H. Aorta

Hi Stacy, God does answer prayer! I prayed that the cancer was not active, and I just prayed a prayer of thanksgiving that indeed it is not. I am sorry about the clot, but it will be gone with the meds! I am thankful too, that you were able to get the chemo, since you know that it is working for you.

Stacy, I must tell you that the picture of you looked so much better to me than when I saw you in the hospital this summer. I want to tell you too, that you are such a trooper and so strong! Hang in there--your swelling will decrease, and that alone will make you feel better. Always know Stacy that you don't fight this disease alone--so many prayers are offered up daily for you. I don't in anyway want to minimize the struggle that you have--I just want you to know that you are a role model for others that have similiar struggles and even those that don't--like me!

As always, love and prayers. Bonnie

No, everything is not okay. And I don't really know what's wrong. I go to the doctor today for chemo but I'm not supposed to see him. But I'm going to ask to be seen anyway. Something is definitely wrong.

I have incredibly swollen eyes. I can push lightly on the puffiness below my eyes and it stays pushed in. That tells me that's fluid. But why the build up? I also have a lump on my neck that swells and it causes the vein over top of it to "pop" out. It is real tender to touch. I can't sleep if I lay on that side and it puts any pressure on it. This morning that side of my neck is even more swollen. There is also discomfort in both of my arms.

A couple of weeks ago, I showed my nurse the neck and eye swelling problems. She said to look for subtle changes, it may be the cancer itself causing fluid to build up in my chest. Well... I'd say these are more than subtle changes.

So, once I find out what's going on... I'll post it.

I will be going for a CT scan tomorrow morning early. I probably would have had it today but I have to pre-medicate with anti-allergy drugs tonight and tomorrow morning. The last time I had dye with a CT scan I broke out in a rash... allergic to it. I had to have a shot of Benadryl for it to go away and they wouldn't let me drive.

My doctor is pretty certain he knows what it is but I don't want to say until I know for sure. After I have the CT scan, I will take the films upstairs to him so he can review them. Possibly, most likely, not a good scenerio if it's what he thinks it is.

Hey Stacy

I'm not sure if you recall this, but my brother Paul works for the government, on a wildlife refuge. He used to move around a lot, but he finally got a permanent, year-round position about 3 years ago. He lives in Texas, not too far from Galveston--and right in the middle of Hurricane Rita's projected path. I talked to him today. He and a group of co-workers evacuated to Austin yesterday; one of the co-workers had the foresight to reserve some rooms there. My brother's house is a few miles inland, and it's a brick house, so, while he expects damage, he thinks the house may survive the storm. But the rest of his co-workers live closer to the coast, and apparently, none of them have brick homes. He said they're all assuming that their homes will be destroyed, and that they'll lose everything. He said they were sitting around today, joking about the stuff they "used to" have. Paul said that, if his house remains intact, he expects to be hosting guests for a while. I'm just glad they're safely away from the coast. He really won't have any more news until he goes back home after the storm.

My brother went to Texas for a big race a few years ago. He said Rita is heading for for that area.

My brother lives in Anahuac, which he says is close to an hour from Houston. He didn't get stuck in the backups out of Houston--and he left on Wednesday, before the crowd. I talked to him Thursday, and he was already in Austin at the time. I see that that Rita weakened quite a bit, and hit farther east, so I think he may have avoided severe damage. Of course, there's the possibility of flooding, because he lives about a mile from Trinity Bay. He won't have anything to report until he goes back hope. Hopefully the news won't be too bad.

I talked to my brother last night. Because the hurricane veered east, his town was spared any serious damage. He lost a strip of trim near his roof--that was all the damage he sustained. However, there is no electricity in town, and it may be a month before it's back on.

Hi Stacy, I visited with my friend this evening and asked the name of her chemo. She gets two--Carboplatin and Taxotere. After two more treatments I believe that she will be taking a pill a day---Tarceva. It is a new pill and very pricey. She is getting it somehow through her doctor at no cost. At least she has been approved for it. I am not sure if or when she will start it.

I hope that your numbers will be up tomorrow so that you can have your treatment. Love and prayers, Bonnie

Hi Bonnie. I was able to get my 4the chemo today. My doctor was also happy to see improvement with the trouble around my port-a-cath. My white blood cell count was 4.7. The lowest number in the "normal" range is 4.8 so that was good.

I've never been on carboplatin but I have heard of it. It's one of my future choices. But I have been on Taxotere. Taxotere can be hard on you, I had quite a few problems with it. I was glad to get off of it.

Your friend is so blessed to be able to get her prescription for free. That stuff is so expensive.

Thank you so much for your prayers. I keep you all in my prayers as well.

I wasn't able to get chemo again today. My numbers were pretty low. He could have possibly gotten away with it but didn't want to take the risk of them dropping to "going in the hospital" levels. The white blood cell count was 2.2. He didn't put me on an antibiotic this time. I told him I can't take the Levaquin anymore when he does need to put me on one. It makes me throw up.

My doctor said that right now I am on 50 mg's of Navelbine. He will have to lower the dosage to a level that is effective and yet allows me to get chemo every week. He's not sure what they will be yet. I will see him again next Thursday.

I have been having a lot of problems with my stomach. I either can't each much without nausea OR I don't have an appetite at all. He said that is definitely from the chemo.

I have also been having problems for over a week now with swelling and puffiness on the right side of my neck. I have discomfort in the right side of my chest, it feels similar to a pulled muscle. I also get light-headed everytime I bend or lean over then stand up. Plus I have A LOT of puffiness around my eyes, particularly the right eye.

All of this is on the side of my port-a-cath. My doctor is convinced that there is something going on with the port causing all these problems. There is a tube attached to the port that is inserted in a vein at the time of surgery. That tube takes up space in the vein. Any time there are small blood clots or anything else in the vein, it can cause a bit of a blockage. He's pretty certain that is what is going on. I am to pay attention to my right arm to see if it swells. He will keep an eye on it. It can correct itself. If it doesn't, I'm not sure what he will do. I suspect I'd have to get the port taken out and have a new one put in. But I don't know.

I still get tired very easily and have to nap several hours everyday. Plus I sleep around 9 or 10 hours a night. I don't have much energy so I'm not able to do too much around the house but I do get things done a little at a time.

Fortunately I've discovered that Little House on the Prairie comes on in the afternoon and in the evening!! I love that show and I HAVE to watch it when it's on. That's one advantage to spending a lot of time on the couch... you find old shows that you've missed and loved.

Welp, that's the latest scoop.

Hi Stacy, I have missed you not posting on the site. I am sorry to hear that you could not get chemo. I know from my friend what a downer that is! However, you don't want to go to the hospital. I hope that the meds work for you this week. My heart is aching for you. Not feeling well is so hard. I hope that will improve for you too.

I take my friend tomorrow for her treatment, and she is thinking that she might not be able to get chemo. She has chemo every third week, and she hasn't felt well since she had the last treatment. The nurse thought that she might have a bug as something was going around. So I guess we will find out tomorrow what the problem is.

Gregory's dog came home tonight. I did not see her, but Jack did. He thought that she seemed fairly good. She still must have an injection daily as the doctor is still trying to rid her body of the tetnus. The tetnus attacks only the muscles--not the brain or organs. She does look different as her head is disfigured because of the muscles contracting. She also still needs lots of rest. They are happy to have her home.

Stay strong Stacy and rest your body. Please know that we continue to pray for good health for you. Love and prayers, Bonnie & Jack

Hi Bonnie, do you know the name of the chemo that your friend gets once every three weeks? You probably told me but remind me what kind of cancer she has?

Fortunately since I didn't get chemo, my appetite has been just fine this week. I went out to dinner at Chili's one night and had an AWESOME steak with steamed onions and mushrooms. It tasted GREAT and I was able to eat the whole thing without any problems!!! That was an accomplishment!

I'm glad Ice came home. How is she doing now?

Did your peppers turn red? Mine did.

Hi Stacy, Yes, my peppers turned red much to my disappointment. I liked them purple. It is good that you did not try them. Jack did, and they are very, very hot. He only had one! I hope that yours have stayed as nice as mine all summer. I have enjoyed watching them grow.

Ice is doing well. She is still having trouble with her hind legs. It makes it hard for her to do the steps. However, we are hoping that the legs will improve with time. Ice is so happy to be home, and she has begun to play again with Hammer. So that is a very good sign. We are all thrilled to have her home!

My friend was diagnosed with lung cancer 4 years ago next month. I will have to find out from her what kind of chemo she takes as I don't remember. She just finished her 6th one. The doctor wants her to take two more than possibly a 9th one. However, the last one and the one that she received last Friday have made her sick. So she is not sure that she will be taking anymore. She is getting headaches, very, very tired and sick to the stomach and not able to eat much. Not a fun time as you well know. Up to this point she has tolerated the chemo well. I don't know if she has talked with the doctor yet about the problem. I just tried to call her before I started this note, but she is not home. I will find out though the chem type and let you know.

It was good to hear that you could enjoy food again. How is this week going for you?

I could not get the helicopter video to run, but I know that it was a great time for you. What a nice thing for your friend to arrange and for WBAL to do!

I will email soon when I get the chemo name. Love and prayers, Bonnie

Hi Stacy, How are you doing? I hope that you had a good weekend with family and friends. Yesterday was a quiet day for us. We celebrated the holiday Saturday with a cookout with our family. We had crabs--I know that is one of your favorites--we had planned to have them in July for Bradley's 40th, but because of schedules we couldn't do it until this past weekend.

How are you feeling and are your treatments going well? We pray that they are. I take my friend this Friday for her treatment, and she always worries about her numbers--hoping that they will be good so that she can have the treatment. Like you, sometimes she has to wait until the numbers are better.

Have you ever heard of a dog having tetnus? Gregory and Stephanie's dog has been at the vets for over a week with it. Ice had been taken in to be fixed, and she became ill about 2 weeks later. The vet wasn't sure at first what the problem was. I hope the vets know what they are treating and that she gets better. We have never heard of a dog having it just horses.

We send our love and prayers and hope that you are having a good week. Bonnie & Jack

Hi Bonnie! I didn't do too much this past Labor Day Weekend. My tummy was a little funny so I rested a lot. I did do a little shopping and attempted to eat lunch on Sunday with my Mom and Aunt Nancy. No, I've never heard of a dog having Tetanus. Hmmm. I sure hope she get's better. I don't even really know what happens to humans when they get it other than possibly getting "lock jaw".

How much did it cost for you to drive to Texas before? I bet you got a lot more mileage for the dollar then. Thank God it wasn't that high then. Even my little buggy is expensive to keep on the road. Sure stops the 'running around'. Go where I need to and that is about all.

I will be glad when you can get this one on the road too. It will have to be cheaper to drive than the truck.

Hope you had a good weekend. Did you get together with any of the family? Labor Day cookout?

My mom is now in Maryland to stay. My sister and her husband have a contract in on a house in Glen Burnie, with an apartment downstairs for my mom. That way, she'll have her own place, with some privacy, and won't interfere with anyone else, but will still have someone available if she needs something. And with rents as high as they are in this area, she couldn't afford to rent a place on her own anyway. They won't settle on the house until mid-October, and then it will take some work to get the apartment ready. In the meantime, she's staying with my youngest brother in Laurel (in Savage, near Savage Mill).

By the way, that brother has a roommate living in the basement. I just found out he works for Verizon Wireless, though he's leaving and moving to Minnesota soon (I think that may be where he's from). His name is Ross--don't know his last name, but I just wondered if you might know him.

I don't have to take the Levaquin antibiotic now. Thank GOD because it made me sick to my stomach. I lost a lot of sleep the last two nights with nausea. Maybe I'll get some sleep tonight.

I was supposed to get my 3rd chemo today. The drug is called Navelbine and it's notorious for being hard on the white blood cells (WBC's). You need your WBC's to fight off infections. If it get's low enough, you need to be hospitalized to avoid contracting something.

These were my counts today:

WBC = white blood cells
RBC = red blood cells (carry oxygen)
The numbers in the parenthesis are the "within range or normal" numbers.

Needless to say, my counts were to low to get chemo.

My doctor also put me on an antibiotic for 7 days. It's called Levaquin. I imagine he put me on it just to protect me from infection.

I go back next Thursday to try again.

I hope you're not discouraged at all. As you said, Navelbine is very hard on white cells. But apparently the problem normally occurs within the first couple weeks of treatment, and the white count typically goes back up after a few days. My dad had to skip a treatment for that reason, but his counts were ok the following week. I'm glad he's putting you on an antibiotic--probably a wise precaution!

I wrote this poem during my first encounter of breast cancer in 1999. Hence the name of this website. I wanted to re-post this since it hasn't been on here since I started this site.

****************************************************************************************

A DIFFERENT KIND OF MOUNTAIN

A lump, a sonogram, and a mammogram.
Then an inconclusive biopsy.
My world is turning upside down.
A high mountain and a dark sea.

So many unforeseen challenges.
Suddenly mystic roads untraveled.
Family and friends lives in a balance.
Struggling not to become unraveled.

Advise of untrusted results.
Go in to have this thing removed.
Possible results could incur.
Few procedures behooved.

The tumor is malignant.
Perform a lumpectomy.
Lymph nodes dissected.
Will there be a mastectomy?

Promptly see an Oncologist.
Adriamyacin, Cytoxin, and Taxol.
Eight long rounds of treatment.
Eight injections of toxins.

Blood vessels are small and deep.
Best to get a port-a-cath.
Another surgical procedure.
This is the wisest path.

The treatments cause side effects.
Although blood counts unaffected.
Many physical changes.
Off to radiation I am directed.

High hopes of finality crushed.
Expected radiation treatments delayed.
Doctor didn’t like pathology reports.
My nerves are getting frayed.

A second kind of cancer.
Overlooked by the others.
More surgery in site.
What’s next to be discovered?

Another mammogram and more.
CT and bone scan to see.
Has this cancer traveled?
And formed another malignancy?

A full body scan of bones.
A nuclear dye injected.
Collapsed vein from the needle.
Now it has become infected.

All the anxiety from waiting.
All worries and doubts relieved.
No metastatic malignancy.
My body has been reprieved.

An antibiotic takes care of me.
Superficial thrombophlebitis no more.
Only remains of a sore, hard, warm vein.
The least of my problems, I’m sure.

A time to climb a different kind of mountain.
And face a left breast mastectomy.
My life is totally changing.
Tougher than a lumpectomy.

A different kind of mountain.
I can only imagine and strive.
To endure every crevice and slope.
Fighting to stay alive.

If it means to stay alive.
Lose my left breast I must.
God holds my dearest destiny.
In God I truly love and trust.

Howdy there friend
I was just thinking about what all you are going thru and had to come and leave another post.
You are a special gal and I remember how tough chemo was and made you feel too.
So I am hoping I can send you some love and prayers and something to make your days go more smoothly.
Is this a chemo week or is that something you prefer not to talk about?
I had a surprize visit from the grand kids today and was great even though we just took them home Sunday. Went out for waffles and strawberries (with a little whipped cream too) with my grand-daughter who is 7.
Wow she had a way to encourage me when I was on chemo she would look at me with those precous blue eyes and your heart would melt. Then one day I was reading e-mail and the tune was so nice and bouncy and I was dancing in my chair and she looked at me and in a very quiet voice said "grandma aren't u sick?' Took me several re-peats to know what she said and when I did I said oh dear.... thats quite alright as dancing even in my chair with you on my lap is so wonderful my heart rejoices. It made me so much better and the day took on a different feeling.
May you feel loved and special as you are........Love sylvia/nursie
Oh I reminded ppl about your site at CCN and hope your mail box is flooded......... ha ha

Hi Nursie!! It's wonderful to see you stop in!! You have always been such a sweetheart!! I'll have to stop in CCN again soon. I had a visual in my mind when you were describing the incident with your grand-daughter. How sweet!!

Thank you so much for reminding others about my site. I try to write for my friends and family to update them on my progress but I also write for all the people that I don't know that may be reading but not writing. For the people that want to learn about the process of cancer and treatment.

Please stop in again soon!! Always great to hear from you!!

I was able to receive my 1st chemo treatment with the new drug this passed Friday. The actual procedure went well, I didn't have any problems and felt fine.

That evening and since then I have had body aches similar to flu aches. That is normal for this drug. I have been taking Tylenol and it does help.

If all goes well, I get my next treatment this coming Thursday.

Hey Stacy,
Good to see a post from you. Have been wondering how you're doing. Glad the new chemo is agreeing with you. What you described is very similar to Mom's reaction; she's on docetaxel and carboplatin.
Keeping you in our prayers.

It's great to hear from you, Mom and I ask each other often if either us of had heard anything yet. How did the port-a-cath insertion go for your Mom? Did she tolerate the surgery well?

The Docetaxel is also known as Taxotere. It's more commonly called Taxotere. My doctor thought about that same regiment for me but he decided to go with the Navelbine for now.

Is your Mom home yet? Is she staying with anyone?

I too am keeping you and your family in my prayers.

Hi Cliff. I guess it agrees with me. So far I've had body aches that I can help with Tylenol. But I've also had a funny stomach. It's not really nauseaus but it's right on the edge of it when I eat. When I eat it starts to feel funny. I can only eat light things and not a lot of it. I guess that could be a good thing for losing weight but I HAVEN'T LOST ANY!! Hey, if I have to have a negative thing happening, I EXPECT the positive result out of it!!

Hopefully the nausea is just a temporary effect, as you get used to the drug, and you'll be eating steaks and ribs and big greasy hamburgers again.

Did you get them to put and grenadine in your Navelbine?

Well, if you call Aranesp the same as Grenadine then YES. They are able to put the Aranesp straight into the IV now vs. putting it in my stomach. Thank GOD, remember how I used to talk about that horrible shot?!?!?! Now it goes right in the IV and doesn't hurt a bit.

My stomach handled a bologna and cheese sandwich today. And that's about it. I'm hoping I can get a piece of watermelon down this evening.

I hope your stomach feels better soon. I certainly wouldn't want to live on bologna sandwiches for very long. Besides, how will I be able to take you to dinner if you can't eat???????

Patrick and I are going to Ocean City tomorrow, coming back Friday. We need the time together. He was in Sheppard Pratt for a week after drawing some rather nasty pictures of my demise and putting them all over the walls in the hall upstairs. He was diagnosed with depression, and a mood disorder. So he's now on two meds. He's not too happy about that, but he's been behaving well since he got back. I hope the meds kick in soon, and he starts feeling more positive. I think some fun at the beach, away from home and chores and the usual routine, will help.

Thank you for the sweet note. You are quite the friend also!! This summer sure isn't anything like last summer, huh?

I sure know who my "force" is and I hope He stays with me at all times. And when He can't, I hope He send lots of Angels to sit on my shoulders!!

Hey Wonder Woman! So how is it going with the new chemo? I hope its not been too hard on you. Mom says "Hello"...she asks about you a lot. (You've been quite an inspiration...)
Don't know if I told you, but they stopped her chemo...it was just too hard on her...She has to still do four weeks of Rituxin and then we'll see what happens. She goes for a pet scan next week..I guess that will tell the tale. How long will u be doing this round of chemo? Is it a new drug they're trying out or have u had it before? I hope all goes smoothly for you....You deserve a break after all u went thru....I'll keep checking in here to see whats happening..
Tell your Mom hi.....Take Care..

Hey girl! Just wanted to say hi. Hope things are going reasonably well this week. There was an article in the Anne Arundel section of the Sun a few days ago about the Friday night car cruises at the Ritchie Highway Shopping Center, right here near me. I've been there, and unfortunately, they don't really get too many cars. (I guess that's why I don't even bother looking any more!) Have you been able to get out much lately?

Dear Friend
We have spoken together at the Cancer network and tonight when I looked on "about us" at CCN I saw the link to your site.
I am not sure how you use it to post but I do want to let know you know you are in my thoughts and prayers and pray that you are doing better at the present time.
Wishing the best for another bosum buddy......

Hey Girl! Thought I would drop in to say hi & see how you are doing. Didn't want you to think I have forgotten about you. I have been busy we just got back from the beach & my dad is suppose to be coming home on Sunday. He has been in the hospital/re-hab for 2 months now & hasn't improved a whole lot he can walk very little he is mostly in bed all the time now it's sad to see him like that esp. since he is only 62. Well enough of my rambling. I hope you are feeling better & my thoughts & prayers are with you always.
