I'll start this off by telling you my Pearl Harbor Day memories. - The day was clear and cold in Newburgh and I was 9 years old. About noontime that Sunday, with a dime for the movies and a nickel for candy, I was headed for a double feature at the Cameo Theater. The first movie was "A Yank in the RAF" starring Tyrone Power and the second movie was "Mother Wore Tights" starring Betty Grable. On the way there, I noticed the usual groups of young men on corners joking and talking about pro football or girls. I watched the first movie and left the theater because I wasn't interested in the second. On leaving the Cameo Theater, I noticed that the groups of young men had grown much larger and people seemed to be hurrying somewhere and some groups were listening to radios in parked cars. I couldn't figure it out. As soon as I got home, I told my Father, who was shaving, about all the activity on Broadway. He told me the news about the Pearl Harbor attack. I think I asked if that would affect Newburgh. He looked at me and slowly said, " It will affect the whole country - ". A year and a half later he was drafted into the Navy.
