Yes, Uncle Jack did come home safely. He was kind enough to let my dad use his car all the time he was fighting in the war.
We had a neighbor who was a flyer during the war so every time a plane went by overhead all us little kids would wave and yell "Hi Johnnie"! We actually thought it was our own Johnnie and were sure he could hear us yelling. I remember going with my mother to pick up our 'rationing' books with the little stamps in them which were used to get sugar, flour, and coffee. The war years didn't mean much to little children but I do remember my mother crying over it. I have more vivid memories of VJ Day and VE Day, since I was older by then.....
