Subject: Mules -breeding info-big ugly heads?

I need some information please. I would like to breed one of my mares to a jack to get a saddle mule. They are very scarce here in Ontario, Canada. I assumed that a mammoth jack would throw 14 hand+ babies with a quarter horse mare 14.3 hands. I have been told that it is the size of the MARE that gives the height not the size of the jack. The fellow further told me that if I bred my mare with a mammoth jack all I would get is a 14 hand foal with a big ugly head.(Not quite what I had in mind) Is this true? We have 25 horses and approx. 12 mares. I have a 16 hand TB/Hanovarian Sport Horse that is open but she hates our standard donkey gelding that shares her 20 acre paddock; so I`m thinking that she would be less than impressed by being serviced by a longears! I can use my sons QH mare but she is just 14.2 hands and I would like a 15 hand mule. What do you think?

My sister has the largest jackstock Ranch in the state of Texas she has over 60 jennys and I am not sure how many Jacks. She has won the Fort Worth stock show as well as the Houston. She only deals with Mammoth Stock She has some of the nicest mules I have ever seen. Big head well The horse will usely determin the size of the head by how she eats and is taken care of ect. Your mare needs to be about 15 1/2 hh. for a 16 hh. Mammoth jack. You have a 50/50 chance getting a 15-16hh. mule. You just have to love longears.

I often hear the story that the mare contributes the size of the mule Not so!!! mule breeding is a genetic crapshoot but I can tell you from personnal experiance that you do not want to breed to a small jack if your goal are saddle size animals from quarter horse or thoroughbred mares. there are always exceptions but when I used a small {standard Jack} a high percentage of mules turned out undersized even from the same cross. Virtually all old jackmen that I have ever discussed this with concur!!! use a mammoth jack. once in a while a Mammoth on a quarter/thbrd mare will make a drafty mule but that is more desirable than a 700 lb mule. As far as the head goes both parents make a contribution so look for a jack with a nice head. (the head needs to be clipped to really see it] The mare contributes more to the head than the jack and I have some saddlebred mules that have beautiful heads. Many people dont realize that they are mules till they take a second look so I vote find a Jack with a good head 14 hands 1000 lbs minimum with flat bone and best rear end you can find correct on his feet and legs . You need to look at the offspring of each individual. We had a 2 time World Champion Halter Jack who stood 13.3 &3/4" hh. His foals were always 2 to 6 inches taller than the mare. I have also seen large Mammoth jacks that produced mules the same size or smaller than the mare. We feel the ideal size for saddle mules is 13.2hh to 14.2hh. It is much easier to find jacks of that size with good conformation. I have only seen a very few jacks larger than that that I would breed my mare to. Look at the jacks head and his offspring. You want the most refinement possible. Do not breed to a jack that has heavy bone over it's eye, this usually passes on to the mule. It makes them look onrey and the ones I have delt with WERE onrey. One bloodline to look for that makes nice heads is Black Bart. If you have seen the Breyer model of Maynard's Miss Sheba look at the picture of her not the model itself. The model was a resin made of an anglo Arab mule not Sheba herself so it does not really look like her. She has a pretty nice head and is a granddaughter of Black Bart. Her sire was Dry Gulch Maynard, Bart's son, we bred Miss Sheba, she was born in Idaho, not Arkansas as many think. Maynard was 14.1 1/2". Sheba was 4" taller than her mom.

Good Luck!
