  I have been "donkey sitting" for my friend for over 2 years and have become a donkey fan!! Eeyore, my friend's donkey, is returning to his former "mom" and I have purchased 2 jacks that will be keeping my quarter horse company. These jacks are very gentle and have been handled a lot but I will have them gelded. Indy is fairly small, guessing 40-42", and is 4 years old and Woody is large, guessing again 50+", and 2 years old. Donkeys are "well endowed" compared to horses!! Can I expect a more difficult surgery and recovery from castration? Is there anything I can do to make recovery easier for them? It is okay to geld them at their age isn't it?

  hi there ,i just recently aquired a mini donkey /mule? Thats my problem i'm not sure what it is . It has two white back socks and is a dark browny black with a mealy colored mouth and around the eyes.   Miniature donkeys are not used for guarding; they are often done in by predators. Jacks also aren't used, as they have one thing on their mind! Standard jennies are the choice for guarding. They don't do well as guards if they have a foal; they may attack the animals they're supposed to guard just to protect their baby. The guards should be left with the stock 24/7 to do their job. If they are removed for other disciplines, the animals they're supposed to protect could be in danger.

  I have just purchased two jennies that are pretty fat and need to slim down. Right now they are on grass during the day and nothing at night. They do get mineral supplements and no grain. What else should I be doing for them? Do they need some form of roughage? I read that straw is good for them. Any opinions on this? I'll take any information on donkey nutrition anyone can give me.   Recently, we bought a 9 month old Jack at auction. We have him in a paddock just now with a pony and he doesn't seem to happy at the turn of events. He is no longer the vocal little boy that he was when we first got him. I am wondering if he would do better with another donkey to keep him company or will he eventually bond with the pony.

  Hi, everyone! I have a horse of my own and my Mom would like to trail ride with me. She is a beginner rider and I am looking for an elderly donkey or mule that is quiet and willing. He/she would be used for light riding only and would be spoiled rotten. I would like it to be free due to age or else very cheap. Gender is unimportant. Thanks! I live in Maine.

  Two weeks ago I purchased my first mule! Jasper is a 16 month old john with a curious and friendly nature. He appears to have suffered some mishandling in his brief past so he is not as trusting of humans as I would like. He seems to be getting acclimated to his new environment and is not as shy as he was several weeks ago.
  My questions are as follows: #1. I have used round pen/resistance-free training with my horses. Jasper seems to be responding fairly well to these techniques. Is this an appropriate method to use with him? and #2. What color is he? My vet had difficulty describing him in his records. He is a sorrel color on his body with some roaning and one frosty patch on his flank. He has definite dorsal and shoulder stripes. His legs are a combination of his base color with splashes of white, black markings, and brindle patches with cross stripes. Any clues on his possible heritage or any suggestions on other resouces that might know? Regardless, I AM in love with this unique, lovable critter and am proud to join the ranks of the mule-endowed.

  Hi,
  
  My mom just got two female mini donkeys. She has a question for anyone who also has the little beasties. She has a salt block for them and gives them a mineral supplement. However, they have taken to tearing up an area of soil around where an oak tree once stood many years ago, like they're looking for something. Any ideas on why? And any info on what supplements they need? Mom was told that western Pennsylvania is low in selenium and that donkeys needed that.

  Love your website! I am an Old-Time Mule Rider & adore the longears.
  
  My daughter, Reina, has chronic leg weakness, balance problems and sensory integration deficits due to her PDD/Autistic disorder. Hippotherapy addresses all these, plus is great enjoyment & fantastic experience for the child.
  
  The therapeutic riding programs avail. to her are very expensive and difficult to reach. I also enjoy riding and had horses/mules for years. I want my own riding animal (mule) so I can go on rides with Reina and get her the type & freq. of therapy she needs.
  
  Looking for an older or rehab animal, we cannot pay purchase price of "new". I can train. Have some equip. I need a mule at least 15h w/good weight bearing capacity (I am 6'1") and Reina needs a smaller animal (14h OK). Looking for free pasture w/winter shelter near Newmarket NH or Lee NH. I will take excellent care of our longears. I just need space, and a little charity from someone in the community who is more fortunate than we.
  
  Hippotherapy is a need for us -- not recreation. All help & advice from others will be deeply appreciated.
