WITH all the beauty pageants taking place throughout the year all over the world, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations believes there is room for one more.
Asean's Business and Advisory Council has come up with "Miss Asean 2005" in an effort to revive the region's business and tourism potentials. The group of business and industry leaders from the 10-member countries is searching for the most effective spokesperson for the goal. The search which will be held in Jakarta, Indonesia, on March 19.
Tourism Secretary Joseph "Ace" Durano and Jose Concepcion Jr., chair of Asean-BAC and East Asia Business Council Philippines, recently met representatives from the pageant's organizing committee led by Tantowi Yahya of Indonesia to discuss the pageant's staging at the posh Oasis restaurant in Gateway Mall, Araneta Center, Cubao.
The pageant will gather representatives from Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Delegates from India, China, Japan, Korea and Australia will participate as guest-candidates.

Binibining Pilipinas-International 2003 Jhezarie Javier will represent the Philippines. The Hotel and Restaurant Management graduate of the University of Santo Tomas was hand-picked by Binibining Pilipinas Charities Inc. founder Madam Stella Marquez de Araneta.
"She's smart and beautiful but truly down to earth. I have high hopes that she will win," Araneta said of Javier.
Javier herself vowed, "I will do my best to bring home the first Miss Asean crown."
During the local pageant in 2003, the 5-foot-9 charmer was proclaimed Miss Photogenic, Miss Philippine Airlines Sunniest Personality and Miss Myra 300 E Inner Beauty.
Javier left on Tuesday for a three-day exposure trip to Indonesia. She will return to the country to further study the history, culture, and business climate of the countries in the region before her official send-off on March 5.
Aside from presenting beautiful women, the search will also showcase the region's artists. The Manila Philharmonic Orchestra will perform at the pageant, along with pop stars and dancers from Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. An Indonesian couturier will provide the evening gowns for the pageant contestants.
