Miss Tourism contestants back in Harare

Entertainment Reporters
A BEVY of Miss Tourism World contestants yesterday arrived from Victoria Falls to a rousing welcome at the Harare International Airport ahead of the finals scheduled for this weekend.

Vice President Joyce Mujuru, who flew with the models from Bulawayo where their plane made a stop-over to pick some passengers, had time to chat with the beauty contestants at the airport.

Zanu-PF Secretary for Women’s Affairs Cde Oppah Muchinguri, Zanu-PF National Chairman Cde John Nkomo and Zanu-PF Deputy Youth Secretary Cde Saviour Kasukuwere were also at the airport to welcome the beauties.

The 95 contestants, clad in white T-shirts inscribed with the theme of the pageant "Discover a World of Beauty in Zimbabwe", were each presented with a rose and a red ribbon, which are universally recognised symbols of empathy with people living with HIV and Aids.

In a speech on behalf of the Minister of Health and Child Welfare, Dr David Parirenyatwa, the director of nursing services in the Ministry of Health and Child Welfare, Mrs Cynthia Chasokela, said the pandemic was not a problem confined to Africa solely but affected the whole world too.

John Singh, the president of the Miss Tourism World Organisation, said the tour had more than accomplished its intended purpose and would bear fruit as the contestants would act as Zimbabwe’s tourism ambassadors to the world.

He said the success was attributable to the Government of Zimbabwe and its people.

The Zimbabwe Tourism Authority hosted a brief reception for the models at the airport before police escorted the beauties to the Sheraton Hotel and Towers, the venue of the grand finale.

Meanwhile, the tour of Zimbabwe’s tourist holiday resorts continues today with models visiting Kariba, the Great Zimbabwe Monument and the Eastern Highlands where they would go on mountain climbing. Last week the Government rescued the Miss Tourism World pageant after the licensee had failed to fund the event. The move was necessitated by the need to rescue the pageant because it would have reflected badly on the country had it been cancelled.
