WORLD acclaimed soul singer Lionel Richie will be one the main performers at the prestigious Miss Tourism World pageant to be held in Victoria Falls next month.
The multitalented artiste who is also a composer and producer is likely to add flavour to the event.
The 55yearold singer is still going strong, having released a 13track album, Just for you, late last year although it is still to be released in Zimbabwe.
The singer, who was once part of the soul group, the Commodores made a name for himself with internationally acclaimed tracks such as Penny lover, Destiny, Angel Dancing on the ceiling, All Night Long, Easy like Sunday morning, Stuck on You, Truly, Still, Three times a lady, Do it to me and Endless Love.
An official at the Miss Tourism World offices, Ian Brambly confirmed that the singer is going to be part of the pageant, while locally Oliver Mtukudzi will also perform at the event.
“Lionel Richie will coming for the show and we have also selected Mtukudzi to play at the event,” he said.
Zimbabwe overcame challenges from China and Thailand to win the bid to host the glamorous beauty pageant that is likely to boost the tourism industry in the country.
The pageant is planned for live broadcast to all participating 72 countries and then across Africa, Asia, Europe and North America.
Zimbabwe met the entire criteria necessary to host an event of such magnitude.
The selection procedure was based on three key criteria, tourism, security and infrastructure. An eightcommittee member was in the country last year on a factfinding mission.
A Londonbased television station Original Black Entertainment (OBETV), a sky digital channel, which is working closely with the pageant, is shooting a sixpart tourism documentary to promote Zimbabwe’s tourism industry and the economy as a whole.
The documentary, once complete is set to be broadcast on OBETV, which has a commanding reach of 90 million homes across Europe, including the Nordic regions, 10 million homes in the UK alone and reaches viewers across North Africa.
