ABOUT 30 Miss Tourism World contestants yesterday had a walk-about of greater Harare bringing business in the capital almost to halt.

Scores of people could be seen mingling with the bevy of beauties as they were shown some parts of the city of Harare while others peeped through their offices to catch a good glimpse of the models.

A brief parade was mounted at the scenic Africa Unity Square at the corner of Sam Nujoma Avenue and Jason Moyo Avenue where the models soaked themselves in the cool ambience of the summer breeze.

Later, the models strutted up and down the Africa Unity Square where various photographers from both foreign and local media jostled for photo and video shoots.

The video shoots would be used in a documentary on tourism that will to be released after the grand finale slated for February 26 at the Elephant Hills Hotel in Victoria Falls.

This is the second time Zimbabwe has hosted a pageant of international magnitude with the first one being the Miss Malaika 2002, a pageant that also showcased Zimbabwe as a safe tourist destination.

The Miss Tourism World, which is aimed at promoting tourism, is also expected to further showcase as a peaceful and safe destination for tourists.

A boom in business is also expected during and after the pageant. Meanwhile, the number of contestants taking part in the coveted tourism pageant has risen from 100 to 101 after the Zambian Lonah Shawa, Model of the World Africa, joined in late yesterday. Lonah is representing the resort town of Livingstone. Her late entry, according to Mr John Singh, the president of Miss Tourism World organisation, came after the Zambian had indicated that she would represent and market the prestigious town of Livingstone.

"We could not deny her entry because the essence of the pageant is to promote the beauty of nature.

"It is meant to promote tourism and Zambia wants to promote her resort town just like other countries that have two or more representatives for different resort centres in their countries," Singh, who hailed Zimbabwe as a peaceful country, said.

"Zimbabwe is not what certain sections of the media say. It is a peaceful country," added Mr Singh.

According to him, the international community was eagerly waiting to see whether the event would succeed. "Many detractors were surprised when they saw that the event was becoming a reality and they started believing that it would succeed after our arrival in Harare.

"The involvement of these hundred countries helps Zimbabwes tourism sector since governments and commercial sectors are working together," he said, adding that Zimbabwe should set a new trend for Africa in promoting tourism.

In a related development, the organiser of Miss Tourism Botswana, Ms Millicent Shunda said the situation in the country was not what had been written about in various sections of the media.

"Zimbabwe is a very peaceful and beautiful country and one has to visit the country if one is to have a clear picture of the country," the widely travelled Shunda said.

About 70 of the 101 contestants have already left Harare for Victoria Falls, and the remaining models who yesterday toured the greater Harare would leave Harare today to join the others in Victoria Falls.

NEW YORK, Feb. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Paula M. Shugart, President of the Miss Universe Organization announced today that Bangkok, Thailand will host the 2005 MISS UNIVERSE(R) Competition. The show will broadcast domestically on NBC and Telemundo on Monday, May 30, 2005 at 9PM ET (delayed PT) and will be distributed around the world to nearly a billion viewers.

"We felt during our first trip to Bangkok, last June, that we had found our home for the next Miss Universe competition," said Shugart. "The officials we met with in Thailand showed great enthusiasm at the prospect of hosting the three week event. After the tragic tsunami of December 26th, all discussions were put on hold out of respect for the country and the Thai people. In recent weeks the Thai Government and the other entities involved returned to us, certain of their desire to host the Pageant, its contestants and their families and friends. We are honored and look forward to the privilege of helping Thailand as it begins to rebuild its tourism industry. We have told Minister Kunplome that he has our full support."

"We send our sincerest thanks to The Miss Universe Organization for all the support and enthusiasm they have shown since this process began," said Thailand's Minister of Sport and Tourism, Mr. Sontaya Kunplome. "We know that bringing the Pageant to Thailand is one of the many steps in re-building our economy and boosting our tourism. There is no better time, for our people and our economy, for us to bring this worldwide event to our country."

Of Thailand's 62 million residents, almost 10 million reside in Bangkok, known in Thai as the "City of Angels." The 223 year old city, which is rapidly becoming one of the premiere fashion capitals of the world, is a dazzling mix of towering sky scrapers, shimmering golden temples (including the dazzling and not to be missed "Grand Palace") and unique shopping districts. The city is also home to many ancient canals, which once afforded Bangkok the title "Venice of the East." Outside the city's 200-plus mile perimeter, the landscape is diverse. From the lush green mountainous forests of Northern Thailand to the stunning tropical white-sand beaches along the Andaman Sea (home to some of the world's best snorkeling and scuba diving), the country offers a variety of scenic tours and relaxing destinations. During the three- week pageant period, family, friends and international media from all over the world will visit Bangkok while hundreds of millions of viewers will tune-in for the live broadcast.

The Pageant will be hosted by Matching Studio Public Company Limited, Bangkok Broadcasting & TV Company Limited and BBTV Productions Company Limited, three of the most prominent companies in Thailand. We wish to thank Mr. Somchai Cheewasutthanon of Matching Studio and Madame Thasani Siriyeum of Showcase Thailand 2005 for their tireless efforts in helping bring the Pageant to Bangkok.

The Miss Universe Organization, producers of the MISS UNIVERSE(R), MISS USA(R) and MISS TEEN USA(R) competitions, is a Donald J. Trump and NBC partnership. Utilizing its global grass roots infrastructure, the Miss Universe Organization is committed to increasing HIV/AIDS Awareness and women's health and reproductive issues. By forging relationships with organizations committed to research and education, such as the Global Health Council, Gods Love We Deliver and the United Nations Population Fund's Face- to-Face Campaign, Miss Universe is armed to impact women today.

Date Posted: 11:43:25 02/17/05 Thu

** Miss Tourism World pageant venue has been officially moved to Zimbabwe's capital city, Harare. The move was made due to public demand since if it's gonna be in Elephant Hill, Victoria Falls, only few people would be able to go there to witness the pagaent. Whilst, they have finally decided to move the coronation night in Harare International Conference Centre which has a seating capacity of 4,000. The February 26 coronation night date is still the same though.

** From 101 candidates, the number has lowered down to 90 candidates. It has not been confirmed yet if other candidates are still coming. But as of the press time, there are only 90 candidates. Apart from the record breaking number of participants, the organizer believes that this year has the most number of delegates who are truely beautiful and stunning. So it is expected that the pageant this year is really tough, and would be really difficult to choose the semifinalists.

** When the candidates arrived in Harare Zimbabwe, half of the ladies were sent directly to Elephant Hills, Victoria Falls for some photoshoot ang sight seeing, while the other half of the delegates which include Miss Tourism World Philippines Sheryl Lou Franco remained in Harare for more city promotions of the pageant, candidates' parade, so as official visits to Zimbabwe officials.

** Yesterday, the candidates who were in Harare finally joined the rest of the candidates in Elephant Hills Victoria Falls to enjoy the view, and have their photoshoots. All candidates are expected to go back to Harare comes Sunday for more activities and pageant rehearsals. They will all stay in Sheraton Hotel Harare, the official hotel sponsor.

** Miss Tourism World Philippines Sheryl Lou Franco was provided with a room for herself when they arrive in Elephant Hills Victoria Falls. After finding out that she was not sharing with someone in her room, she invited Miss Thailand to be with her in her room, and Miss Thailand graciously accepted the offer and is now with Sheryl Lou in her room. Miss Thailand, Miss India and Miss Philippines have become bestfriends since they arrivein Harare, Zimbabwe.

** After four days in Harare for the Miss Tourism World pageant, Miss Tourism World India decided to back out and go back to India. She was actually one of the ladies who were left (because they missed the flight dahil hindi nagising ng maaga) last Wednesday in Harare when the candidates flew to Elephant Hills. But when the candidates who were left in Harare arrived in Elephant Hills, Miss India was not one of them. It was later on confirmed that she decided to go home and not finish the pageant.

** Yesterday, Sheryl Lou's group had their national costume photoshoot. Though she did not wear her headress, still many candidates admired her national costume. (Pls note that we made some revision on her Terno... so ibaba na yang kilay na nakataas! lolz). She said that Miss Peru's national costume was splended.

** Sheryl Lou Franco is still in high spirit at this stage of the competition. Though she honestly believe that she is facing a tough pool of candidates, still she promises to give this pageant her very best shot!

To Sheryl Lou, we really admire your fighting spirit, and wish you the best of luck. Our prayers are with you always! God bless!

THE Miss Tourism World pageant, initially set for Victoria Falls, will now be held at the Harare International Conference Centre in Harare on 26 February, the president of the Pageant, John Singh, said yesterday.

Speaking at a press conference in Victoria Falls where he is accompanying the models who are on tour of Zimbabwe’s resort areas, Singh said: "There has been a lot of interest among the different sections of the society and the organisers have seen it fit to bring the event to the people," Singh said.

Meanwhile, 30 models arrived in Victoria Falls yesterday to join 71 other contestants taking part in the pageant.

A brief parade was held at the Victoria Falls airport, kicking off a weeklong tour of Zimbabwe’s tourist attractions.

Representing Zimbabwe is Midlands State University science student, Oslie Muringai, the reigning Miss Zimbabwe.

Hosting Miss Tourism World pageant will result in the production of a documentary that is expected to market Zimbabwe the world over.

The documentary titled Authentic Zimbabwe, is a 12-part infotainment that is being shot by England-based Original Blacks Entertainment Television to market Zimbabwe’s way of life.

The documentary would be premiered for 12 weeks after the Miss Tourism World finals.

The shooting of the documentary commenced on December 26 last year and is expected to be complete when the grand finale of the pageant is held.

The director of the television station, Michael Orji, said the aim of the project is to portray Zimbabwe in its true, genuine natural light.

"The documentary would premier Zimbabwe’s whole way of life without any distortion.

"It will premier tourist resort centres, economic aspects, industries and everyday life of people in rural areas and urban areas," Orji said.

In tourism, the documentary promotes the majestic Victoria Falls and other tourist resort centres.

Orji added that the documentary is a way of educating people about life in Zimbabwe.

"It is a media function of portraying what is really on the ground and it is not surprising that the documentary — Authentic Zimbabwe — gives a true picture of Zimbabwe without any distortion.

"When people see reality they will surely weigh it against all that has been peddled in some destructive media sections," said he.

Miss Tourism World grand finale and tour of the country by the models, constitutes a segment of the documentary.

Orji said by including the grand finale in the documentary the international community would have an undistorted picture of Zimbabwe translating to positive marketing of the country.

There are 101 candidates raw this year sa Miss Tourism World pageant. Grabe, mas marami pa ang candidates nila ke sa Miss Earth, Miss International at Miss Universe. Bilib na talaga ako kay Sheryl Lou if she makes it sa semifinal round, much more kung sa top five or maging winner. Sabay pala ang crowning ng Miss Tourism World at Mrs. World. Sana magplace silang dalawa para Philippines would have a good start this year.

Yung Miss Tourism World USA pala ay Filipino. I know her personally dahil kapit bahay ko sya dito, pero hindi sya masyadong kagandahan. Pero good luck to both of them na rin.

Another chika is yung Miss China raw ay sobrang premadona.

More chixmax next time.

HARARE, Feb. 13 (Xinhuanet) -- More than 60 beauty queens from around the world arrived in Zimbabwe on Sunday for the Miss Tourism World pageant to be held in the resort town of Victoria Falls on February 26.

The models bring to 100 the total number of beauty queens that are in the southern African country for the grand occasion, which is being held in Africa for the first time in 20 years.

Head of media planning for the Miss Tourism World, Michael Orji, said that 11 more contestants were being expected.

He said 21 of the models who arrived on Sunday would proceed to Victoria Falls while the rest would remain in the capital.

President of the pageant, John Singh, said the event would provide Zimbabwe with the opportunity to showcase its tourism potential to the world.

"The face of the Zimbabwean tourism has changed today as the touch down of these girls is an eloquent testimony to the fact that Zimbabwe is indeed a safe tourist and investment destination," Singh said.

Orji said most contestants from Europe were very excited about coming to Africa and Zimbabwe in particular.

Zimbabwe's tourism industry has since hailed the move, describing it as positive development that would enable the country to market its unparalleled tourism potential to the world.

Tourism is the third largest growing sector in Zimbabwe after agriculture and mining and is fast emerging as one of the country's significant foreign currency earners.

This is despite the negative publicity that the country continues to get from its traditional source markets, which are the United States, Britain, Germany and other European countries.

Last year, Zimbabwe received 1.27 million tourists and netted in 152.3 million US dollars from the arrivals. Enditem

Hi there... Just wanna say congratulations that your bets made it.

I strongly feel CARLENE will make it through. If ever she wins one of the titles... she will go down in history as the first Filipina to represent our country more than once in a "grand slam" beauty pageant.

Now here is the hard part:
We all know she came from Carousel Production's first year of MISS PHILIPPINES - EARTH. Have you guys checked all the details assuring there would be no problems with her "transition" from a "MISS" to a "Bininibi"? Please make sure because it would be such a waste if there is.

The mere fact that she got accepted is a big deal. But remember that there still is a possibility that she might NOT see her til the end. Remember SHERYLOU FRANCO's case. She got accepted as an official candidate but never made it to the finals.

You see, frontrunners and big bets are, for the most time have to face so much controversies, ending in tears.

CARLENE, as early as now is such a HIT. But please take good care of her. Please make sure nothing will go wrong in her quest for a Binibini title, and ultimately an INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION... Frankly, I am eyeing on the MISS WORLD crown. With three straight good years with MWO, perhaps this is the year for US.

Hands down to your other bets. They look so FRESH, and yet so PRESSURED. Please extend my congratulations to them, and perhaps a little reminder.... HAVE FUN....

Good luck!!! ESSENTIAL BEAUTIES... you rock!

I know everyone knows the beautiful Miss Carlene Aguilar but I just need to point out a slight mistake in Pegpi's Bb. coverage gallery. You guys have inadvertently placed Miss Monifer Samonte's picture under Carlene's name. Just a little detail you may have missed and may consider when you update your fledging gallery. Other than that, everything looks great at the Pegpi and Essential Beauties websites!

On Ella's Disqualification and More Updates on the Screening

After hearing several unconfirmed rumors about Ella's tragic disqualification, the truth behind it has finally surfaced. Ella was disqualified because of the gown (or just gowns) that was/were lost during her stint at the 2003 Queen of Tourism International pageant in Mexico where she won the title. Since the judges' decision is final, we can not really do anything about it.

Going back to the Bb. Pilipinas final screening, there are 102 aspirants currently vying for a slot in this year's Bb. Pilipinas pageant. There was a rumor that front runner Gwenelle Ruias did not come back for the final screening - this is not true. She is actually now at the Dome together with the rest of the aspirants. Gwenelle is the talent of Mr. Gareth of Mabuhay Beauties.

I saw the whole body picture of Miss Sheryl Lou Franco at www.misstourismworld.com website. She has a very small chance compared to her fellow candidates.

1. The picture you sent was not so attractive. it must not be a whole body picture but instead a close up picture.

2. Ms Franco does not have a great smile. Tipid ang kanyang smile KASI DI PO MAGANDA ANG NGIPIN. You know if you have a great big smile sa pageant, it is a plus factor. Sana naman you improved her teeth and the way she smiles.

3. She has a good bone structure sa face nya with georgeous eyes.

4. Nice height also and sexy body but her posing on the picture is below average. nagkaroon tuloy ng flabs sa gilid. dapat nag send kayo nangmagandang posing nya.

5. i hope nag improve na ang kanyang communication skills. okay naman ang communication nya pero it lacks substance kung minsan. may tendency na "going around the bush" sya.

6. THE ONLY FACTOR THAT SHE COULD BE IN THE FINALISTS IN THE PAGEANT IS HER CATWALK SKILLS.

7. THE ONLY THING NA MAGBABA NG KANYANG SCORES AY ANG KANYANG SMILE (because of her teeth maybe)and the way SHE COMMUNICATES.

We're just being factual here. In fairness, ilang taon din namang namayagpag sa numero unong slot ang Kapamilya Network (was it 16 years?) bago nagtagumpay ang Kapuso Network in grabbing that all-important "throne". Ika nga, weather-weather as in, pana-panahon lang 'yan, 'no!

Advertising world ata, o pinaka-head ng isang corporate company ng isang brand of home product ba 'yun? Haaaay.

Lalaban at lababan ang naturang network to "get back" into what they used to -- ang pagiging Numero Unong network ng Pilipinas -- as if it's the biggest deal of their lives. We agree.

Anyway, for the sake of "sharing" -- lalo na sa mga hindi palabasa ng newspapers (tabloid man o broadsheets) -- heto na po ang mga pambulabog, pasabog, at mga pamatay na ALL-NEW SHOWS ng Kapamilya Network na magsisimula next week 'yung iba at 'yung iba'y in the coming weeks.

1. HOME BOY -- Hosted by Boy Abunda. Daily morning talk show, 10-1045am, Monday-Friday. Chikahan ng any topic under the sun.

2. MOST REQUESTED SHOW (MRS) -- Hosted by Amy Perez, Roderick Paulate, and Marvin Agustin, daily after HOME BOY, 1045-1145am.

3. WOWOWEEE -- Hosted by Willie Revillame, ka-back-to-back ng PILIPINAS, GAME KNB ni Kris Aquino. Both are direktang "sasagupa" sa 25-year-old nang EAT BULAGA. In fairness again, GKNB ni Kris is slowly pulling it up sa ratings, at nahahatian na ng audience ang BULAGA na sinasabing maraming pagbabagong magaganap, dahil ata sa kaba?

5. TILL DEATH DO US PART -- Heto na ang katuparan para sa mga fans nina Diether Ocampo at Kristine Hermosa.

Nagpirmahan ng kontrata ang Dos with the "creators" of Panday na sina Carlo Caparas and Donna Villa.

Magkapatid dito sina Marya at Bea.

8. SEARCH FOR A STAR IN A MILLION -- Obviously, pantatapat sa Pinoy Pop Superstar ni Regine Velasquez tuwing Sabado. Hosted by Mark Bautista, Sarah Geronimo, Erik Santos, and Christian Bautista.

9. STAR DANCE -- Hosted by Marvin Agustin (and Toni Gonzaga nga ba?), pang-dancers naman ito, as in dance competition (individual man o group) na wala ang Siyete. Sort of Dance Fever siguro ang drama. Tuwing Sabado rin.

11. MY FIRST -- Daily all-around show na intended for the super-many young stars ng ABS-CBN Star Magic (formerly Talent Center) every 5pm, Monday-Friday.

13. KAYA MO BA 'TO? -- Ala-Extra Challenge, ano pa nga ba? Hosted by Carlos Agassi (na naman?), Chokoleit, at Kitkat na sumikat from being kikay na stand up comedianne.

14. GOIN' BULILIT -- talent search for kids (dancing, acting, singing) na di pa namin alam ang hosts

15. Di mabilang na new Cartoons at Korean telenovelas!

16. May niluluto pa ring new Ai-Ai delas Alas and Arnell Ignacio show, pero wala pang detalye dito.

17. WISH UPON A MEGA -- Sharon Cuneta's new show na nauna nang nai-launch, pero sadly, hindi pa rin nito kinabog ang WISH KO LANG.

18. New VILMA SANTOS show -- Ayon sa press release eh magiging ala-Oprah ang show ni Ate Vi... Ayaw ni Kris, huh!

19. EDU MANZANO - LUCKY MANZANO show -- sitcom na under planning and conceptualization stage pa lang.

ON the other hand, siyempre'y naghahanda rin sa nakatakdang "giyera" sa TV ang Kapuso Network with these new shows:

2. ENGKANTADA -- Not sure either 'yun ang title o ENKANTASYA, to be starred by so many GMA stars headed by Sunshine Dizon, etc.

3. BARE -- new talk show with Ricky Lo (for the serious part) and Melanie Marquez (for the light, funny side)

WELL, there you have it, guys...

Hehehehe.

Hello to all, does anyone think that on last Sunday 1/30/05 on ASAP show Kristine and Diether were on and singing and to me Kristine did not look that happy and inlove like how she is before when she would be a guest with Jericho. I remember how when Kristine and Jericho would be singing and Kristine would be so happy and sparkles on her eyes. And it's different seeing Kristine and Diether. Parang hindi nakakakilig. Parang it's boring and corny. Even their new show Till Death Do Us Part. It's not so nakakakilig. But when Kristine and Jericho in show/movies together talagang nakakakilig. Anyways, tell me what anyone thinks about this. Does anyone feel the same way?

Hello everyone. I am sure most pinoy pageant fanatics are pretty much excited because the local pageant season has started. Well, I hope that this year we'll be able to send a better set of delegates as compared the previous years. I think most will agree with me that the HEIGHT factor plays a very important role in choosing our winners. At the very least our delegates in the international arena should be 5'8" or even higher. This way our beautiful pinays will be truly noticed. Last year, I was really rooting for this former Supermodel-Philippines winner and a semi-finalist in the Supermodel world competition, I forgot her name, surprisingly she didnt make it even in the semi finalist list. That girl could have been a real stunner in any of the three major international pageants. Anyway, that's already water under the bridge. I just hope that this year we will not really be comotting the same mistakes like what we been doing. As a final not, with due respect to all ELLA EVANGELISTA fans, I don't think she's the best pinay delegate to any of the three titles. She looks to pageant patty for me. We need a candidate that looks really sporty like the Present Ms Universe and the Face of MS World 2004 and the body and skin tone of Miss International 2004. And in my opinion if LARA QUIGAMAN has the height, she can do well in any of the three major international pageants especially for the Miss Universe pageant. She was one of my bets when she first joined the Binibini but I was dismayed when i heard her speak because she wasnt very articulate or at the very least conversant. I just hope that she'll do better this year OTHERWISE she'll do another Sherilyn Franco.

To everyone, my best regards.

Peace!

Rashel Santos Out! New Lady to Beat In!

Mabuhay Beauties' Rashel Santos is officially out of contention for this year's Bb. Pilipinas pageant. Just like Juliana Palermo last year, Rashel's previous sexy image did not do her good in her quest for the Bb. Pilipinas titles. Knowing Bb. Pilipinas organization, this news won't actually come as a surprise; but surely many pageant fans would be dismayed with this decision. I for one is disappointed because she has lots of potential to become an international winner. To Rashel, better try MTV Fashionista or Ford Supermodel Philippines; I'm sure you will do much better in modeling.

On the other hand, all 5 Essential Beauties pass the initial screening and will be joining the rest of the applicants for the final screening later tonight.

As of the press time, I have not heard of Juliana Palermo and Sanya Smith's names in the list of applicants. BUT, guess who is this lady who made a commotion upon her arrival in Araneta center? Well, I have already mentioned her in my previous blind items at PBKT; remember the not so known lady but has all the potentials of winning all the three crowns? Yes, that lady has already filed her application, and as expected, her application has definitely brought excitement to every pageant fans, and shiver to almost all applicants.

She is no other than the towering Miss Gwenelle Ruais. She is 5'11" tall, and measures a perfect 35-24-35. Rumor says that she still has to go back to Paris where she is currently studying, to get her Philippine passport. Mmmm.. another Anjanet Abayari and Janelle Bautista in a making? I certainly hope not!

I'm so thrilled Carlene is one of your bets! Though she may have shown the jitters during interview time like she did in the past, I think proper coaching from you guys will help instill more confidence in her public speaking skills. As for beauty, class and pizzazz, I highly doubt you guys would have trouble in that department! All she needs are more drop dead gorgeous gowns! I'm so excited! As for the rest of the ladies, we all know they are high calibre material just like Charlene! Good luck , ladies and more power to you guys at Essential Beauties!

I see Juliana is trying to compete in this coming pageant. Though I initially had reservations about her, I managed to read an interview about her when my sister brought back to the States a Filipino magazine. I was surpised on how much insight she had. Of course, I am comparing my assessment to my previous opinion about her.I never did listen to her on live telecast but if I were to base my opinion solely on what appeared to be her total thought process in print(and not an edited version of the interviewer), then I would say she wasn't too bad in the brain department. Now, if BB Pilipinas would ban her due to her racy persona, I think it would be totally unfair bec. when I visited Rashel's website, it was equally racy to me. I'm not against Rashel's photos but I think they should enforce their requirements to all candidates and not just to Juliana. As an endnote , I do wish all contestants good luck in this coming competition. And Essential Beauties! I am looking forward to your bets. I'm very sure you guys will not disappoint us fans. The suspense is getting intense!
