Serna: A glimpse of world-class beauties
By Roger Serna
Sounds & images

A few weeks back, Cebuanos had a glimpse of the svelte, statuesque and lovely candidates of this year’s Bb. Pilipinas beauty pageant. As most, if not all, of us know three major winners will be picked on Mar. 19 to represent the country in the Miss Universe, Miss World and Miss International beauty tilts, not to mention the other contests participated in by the country where the runners-up and other standouts are chosen to join.

Just last Saturday, the Miss Philippines - Region 7 candidates appeared on ABS-CBN’s Sabado Na Gyud show and met the press at the Hamabar hall of the City Sports Club Cebu. The winner will join the national contest, which will be held soon.

After the two groups, which beauty contest organizations and their respective hopefuls will find their way to Cebu next? Will more regional searches of national contests sprout in the island province (before it is splintered into smaller local government units? God forbid!)?

Speaking of regional searches, the “Mossimo Bikini Summit” will have its first Cebu Search on Mar. 19 at the Cebu Yacht Club in Lapu-Lapu city.

From the batch, three pairs of winners will join the national contest and vie for the ultimate honor of being the best looking gent and lady in bikini. We also overheard the organizers say that some non-winners will still have the chance to join the national tilt if they get the nod from the national search organizers.

As mentioned in my previous column, Cebu-based designers Wendell Quesido, Raymon Kuan and Salvador Malto will provide the outfits in the three segments. During the press presentation, Wendell described his creations as “futuristic glamour.”

Sal will have the swimwear round, while Raymon will dress up the candidates in the personality round. Philchimex Fashion Int’l will make the appropriate accessories for the different segments.

During the press preview, the candidates and the guests “sampled” the intricately-designed accessories, they then expressed delight and appreciation at how local and indigenous materials had been transformed into wonderful works of art.

Incidentally, the Mossimo Bikini Summit Cebu Search coincides with the coronation night of the Bb. Pilipinas, which will be beamed on GMA 7. Now, beauty contest enthusiasts will have to decide which of the two contests have to be prioritized. In two weeks, you have to make your choice or find ways to enjoy both, if ever possible.

Speaking of contests, Visayans for sure have their own bets in the ongoing “Search for Star in A Million” on ABS-CBN which has at least three Cebuanos and a few others from the other provinces in the Visayas in the “Champions League,” which was originally supposed to number only 10 but which rose to 12 when three equally talented wild card contenders joined the first nine finalists.

Two of the wild card contenders are from Cebu, namely: Ryan Racal and VJ (what’s his family name again?). Christine Fernandez entered the league without having to pass the wild card process.

Starting yesterday, text votes were already accepted to help the contestants attain their dreams. Some friends in this paper are rooting for Ryan.

Those of you who are Smart or Talk and Text subscribers, who have the budget to spare, and are generous enough to help a fellow-Cebuano, here’s how to do it. Send STAR to 231 and see your bet rise to reach his or her goal, thereby adding another feather to Cebu’s already well-decorated musical cap.

Whether it will be acknowledged or not in the end, you know you are part of the attainment of that elusive stardom. That alone is already a consolation. Or do you want more? Suit yourself.
