The nostrils are associated with Ida (left) and Pingala (right). When breathing is predominantely through the left nostril that indicates that prana is flowing more strongly in Ida, which suggests that someone is in a more imaginative and suggestable mood. Breathing through the right nostril suggests that current is flowing more strongly in Pingala and may indicate a more outgoing and logical mood.

For kriya yoga we want the current flowing though Sushumna. This will occur when the breath is flowing evenly in both nostrils if the mouth is closed.

However, while the nostrils are assocoated with Ida and Pingala, breathing through the mouth is associated with Sushumna. This is the reason for the open mouthed breathing used in Kriya in some lineages. Sometimes ignorant people claim that in "original" Kriya the breathing must be done with the nose (which it is in some lineages) and the open mouthed breathing was introduced at a later date. However, the open mouthed technique is more effective in moving prana along the Sushumna. This is also the reason why the throat is held in a specific way - to give a head start in getting the "breath" into Sushumna.

"What does the quality of kriya depend on? Is it based on the concentration? Lenght of one kriya? Devotion? Or all of them and more?"

I will go for your last suggestion - All of them and more. I have noticed that for me certain foods make a difference. I have found onions to be very bad, which is a real pity since I love them.
