Hopefully the comp this year will not be dominated by controversial refereeing incidents.
They do an amazing job and the only thing that stops me from becoming a touchie is that I personally could not handle the abuse.
I have seen some woeful refereeing over the years, but it is consistant with shocking choices made by players who drop simple passes and miss easy tackles, club administrators who often run out of food or sign dud players, blind fans who don't know the rules and even this site who lets spelling mistakes make it online despite a spellcheck.
The negative reaction to these things are minimal relative to the insane abuse directed to referees every week.
The main problem with the abuse is that it is often sustained long after the incident. I am guilty of yelling out at bad refereeing but it is an immediate reaction to seeing a bad error. Once the penalty is taken it's all forgotten and the rest of the game becomes the priority.
If a referee stops a game for a couple of minutes this year on the basis that continual unjustified abuse was affecting his or her ability to do their job, I wouldn't be too surprised.
