Looking at Acts 7:54-60 on the stoning of Stephen, I was struck, even on a rudimentary level, with how much it accords with the mechanism we've studied thus far, except from a different perspective. An interesting detail stuck out to me. The text notes that "Meanwhile, the witnesses laid their clothes at the feet of a young man named Saul" (58). According to the teaching I heard on this passage, this Saul is the Saul who later becomes Paul. It is interesting that this notes separates him from the communal violence while making him a participant. On the one hand, Paul did not raise a stone against Stephen (or, perhaps he did, perhaps I'm reading the text completely incorrectly); on the other, he stands as a spectator of the scene. What effect would this particular event, and its ramifications, have on the later conversion and ministry of Paul, with him watching as a spectator (like a theatre-goer) this scene of communal violence?
