Girard, in Things Hidden, acknowledges that Paul/Saul didn't pick up a stone to stone Stephen, but this doesn't discount the unanminity of the action against Stephen. Girard aruges that by giving his consent, he was fully participating. It is interesting to note, however, that as one who does not, perhaps, physically pick up a stone, Saul does eventually feel the mobs turn against him. In acts he records that he has been stoned to the point of death in his life at least one. He may have stood there consenting, but when dealing with the crowd, it is always a good idea to pick up a stone too, just in case. Kiernan, maybe you are right in Paul standing outside, at least in once sense, to become a later vicitm. Hmmm.
