The Joshua text of Achen's sin really brings across clearly this notion of contamination really nicely. Joshua asks God what has gone wrong. God answers "they turn their backs before their enemies, for they have become accursed... Rise up, consecrate the people and say, Consecrated yourselves for tomrrow, for thus says the Lord, There thing are under the ban in your midst of Israel. You cannot stand before your enemies until you have removed the things under the ban." Presumably, Israel consecrates itself and then takes the contaminating task of finding the perpetrator. No wonder nobody wants to touch Achen, his tent, or his family--the stuff is under the ban and he is accursed. In order to avoid contamination, let the stones fly.
