Subject: A Question about Worship/Sacrifice/Ritual

This question may roam outside Girard's theories somewhat, but if anyone thinks it relevant enough to consider, I'd love to hear their thoughts.

Discussing ritual violence at great length, and characterizing man's inclination toward ritual sacrifice strictly in terms of ritual violence, Girard seems to me to neglect some important topics when he describes the Judeo-Christian deconstruction/reversal of this system. With a non-sacrificial reading of Christ's death, and a veritable negation of the definition of religion as maintaining peace by means of ritual violence, what then is worship? To my knowledge, Girard nowhere separates actual worship of God from ritual sacrifice involving a "pretend" god which is actually the pharmakon. After he presents his reading of the Gospels, he says nothing about ritual worship without ritual sacrifice. Being a conservative Catholic, I'll venture to say Girard participates regularly in a pattern of worship that is significantly sacrificial in nature. I'm hesitant to believe Girard would unintentionally neglect this.

If anyone remembers Girard commenting on this, or might explicate a Girardian model of "good" worship as opposed to ritual violence, -- especially if Dr. Jackson has any comments -- I'd love some help.
