There are a lot of things that kids "don't learn" in school, that they actually "learn" in school. For instance, no matter what I try, a high percentage of my Geometry students refuse to even attempt two-column or paragraph proofs. They are a relatively important part of my curriculum and we use them the entire year, but I would say between one-third and one-half of the students don't give anything resembling a real effort to learn them. And a good number of those who do put forth some attempt to learn the proofs still haven't mastered the topic.

Some colleagues of mine may decide then to eliminate the topic, but I think that number is relatively small. In the same way, while many math teachers may teach calculator literacy, we all (or almost all) encourage the reasoning and skills behind hand-calculation. It's not that students aren't being taught the same things, it's that they aren't LEARNING the same things...
