EJ, I wouldn't go so far as to say people who are depressed aren't WILLING to make some sort of physical effort to make a change... they are often emotionally and physically incapable. If you've never been depressed, you can have no idea what it's like. Depression can be all-encompassing and completely debilitating. I took Wellbutrin for about a month when I first moved back from England, but wasn't comfortable being on it and asked to be weaned off, which proved no problem whatsoever. I didn't have a chemical imbalance, I was just overloaded with life. I figured time would take care of what ailed me, and luckily for me it did. It is alarming how quick some doctors were/are to prescribe anti-depressants. I was shocked I was given it so easily. On a side note, that same doctor is now a Women's Health & Wellness doctor who has switched her thinking and her practice to less traditional medicine. She's the one who had me on that yeast-free diet along with bio-identical hormones and natural supplements.

I have a nephew who absolutely cannot function without his anti-depressant. But he has a genuine chemical imbalance and his meds allow him to function normally.

After reading everybody's posts I think you're all in agreement that drugs aren't for everybody, that many doctors over prescribe and mildly depressed people should not take them, and that these medications are indeed helpful to many severely depressed people.

Now I have a different perspective than lolli and DD on this because I'm not an anti-depressant taker so I took no offense to what lynx said. To me she was just saying, YES...What I thought all along was right: there is a better way for most people. There's nothing wrong with that.

Liken that to the Republican Party and President Bush. Many of you disliked him all along, hating he was re-elected, saying he was stupid, shouldn't have gone to war, Republicans are idiots, etc... I would think many people feel that they were right about him all along. And then there's me. I don't hate President Bush. I don't happen to think he's an idiot. (although I do admit I cringe when he says nuclear... but seriously, most people in Texas pronounce it the same way as President Bush!) I'm not a fan of everything the man has done and I think he has made mistakes. (name me one President who hasn't) But when you make blanket disbaraging statements about Republicans, most of you chuckle. I'm a Republican and I am not an idiot. So I could take offense, but I don't.

My point is that perhaps because of your experience, your feelings about the drugs are different and you have a completely different perspective, so it was easy to feel "attacked", if you will. I would bet anything that wasn't the intent.

HAPPY HAPPY JOY JOY :)
