I have been fortunate enough to never have suffered from clinical depression in any form, if fortunate is the correct term. I've never understood depression severe enough to need medical treatment.

While I agree with lynx that there probably is a better, more natural way to deal with depression, those ways require effort and change, which isn't usually something that someone who is depressed is willing to give or do. Drugs can give the same results as the natural ways without any effort on the patient's part. Sure, there are risks, but those risks are for the individual and their doctor to evaluate.

Eventually, someone will invent a Lasik-esque treatment for depression where they go in with a laser and change the part of your brain that's not functioning properly, and you'll be instantly better.
