Pittsburgh TV/Radio Discussion Board
Welcome. This is designed to be the kind of forum that the Post-Gazette used to have to discuss Pittsburgh TV and radio issues and to exchange opinions. No registration is required, but it is a moderated forum. That means posts will be reviewed before they appear on the board.
A few tips:
Do NOT snipe at other posters. Discuss the issues, but don't throw insults at other posters.
Do NOT tell anyone to "Get a life," which is guaranteed to get a post deleted.
Do NOT suggest that posters are critical of on-air personnel because "you're jealous."
Do NOT discuss the personal lives of on-air personnel unless it has some relevance to their work.
Behave responsibly and you'll never have a problem. It's easy so let's get going! You can contact the Moderator either through the "contact Forum Admin" link above or directly by email at: karlsterling@gmail.com.

Heard from three different people now, before the parade there was one final press conference with the Pens. After the conference Jory Rand walked quickly out of the room, chased down the "keeper of the Stanley Cup" and made a point to get a photo with the hardware.
What a professional.
KDKA Radio's Robert Sir supposedly did something similar.
Have some class people.

As a "CMU" grad and anchor, Sonnie's paper flippin is over the top! She doesn't even have to say one word before the papers are flying (front and back). It appears she's on the verge of a nervous breakdown. She has been there long enough to have gained some comfort level and professional standards. It's ridiculous, noisy and distracting. Marty Griffin called the Governor a liar about what he was saying would happen if the PIT isn't increased. 1,000 state cops would be let go. Your autistic children would lose help. All lies Marty said.
Then Marty went on to say that after June 30 the state police would work without being paid while the legislature will be paid. According to Jane Orie, the legislature will not be paid after June 30. Looks like Marty's pants are on fire. Perhaps Marty has earned the title of Fast Marty.

When Dr. Winer was finished telling a caller not to have the surgery, don't have the tumor removed, come to my office and buy whatever.
Then the commercial comes on. "This is the Thomas Smith Funeral Home and we can cremate you for $699."
Perhaps advertising on Winer's show was a good move for Smith.

- WTAE Scooped Everybody -- Meoq, 05:41:44 06/26/09 Fri [1]
From what I could tell, Wendy Bell was the first to report that Michael Jackson died. While she was saying he was survived by his children, CNN still had him at cardiac arrest, then coma. KDKA and WPXI were oblivious to the news until much later. I think the national news did a better job of discussing his criminal tendencies and creepy life. The local stations are more focused on his pop music career.

- Hats off to Pratte - And a question. -- Tom (The original Tom), 11:01:29 06/27/09 Sat [1]
I gotta give him credit, he gets better guests than the other hosts. Hons spent three hours giving his opinion on Michael Jackson and arguing with the callers.
Rob had three guests on, two of which were very well informed about Jackson, in fact one of them was at his home. He was a very good friend of Jackson.
The other was a show producer. And the third was Uncle Ted, who is familiar with show business.
A question, why do they run a weekend ad for Pratte saying his show is the only weekend talk show? For straight talk, Rob does three hours on Saturday and two hours on Sunday. This totals five hours, the same as Chris Moore's Sunday show. Seems to me Chris's show cancels the claim that Pratte has the only talk show.

After watching Mike Zappone who has been subbing on the Nightly Sports call for Jory Rand, my only question to KD management is why did you hire that idiot Rand over Zappone?
Over the past few months, I have watched Rand have his mother on the Nightly Sports Call He has also talked to his wife about chores on the Nightly Sports Call. When he hosts that show, it is just one crank call after another.
Zappone is professional, young, and knows his sports. What a bone-headed move by KD management.
Rand will more than likely be given the boot. And will move in with Tony Zarella and Alan Cutler.

Marty opened his show saying that Brad Bumstead, a writer for the Trib is not allowed to be on his show. The same for Eric Hyle. Marty continued to say that The Trib is afraid of him! The billionaire owner is afraid of him!
Marty concluded his show with a discussion on childhood immunizations. Marty said they are required by PA law for admittance to PA schools. With a few exceptions to opt out. Dr. Winer claims they're not required, period.
I called Winer's office to see if he would call Griffin's show to "discuss" the matter. I was told that he called and was on hold. This was with more than a half an hour left in the show.
Not hearing Winer on the show, I called his office back. Oh yeah, he was hold till the show ended, never put on the air.
I'd say Marty has b@!!$ to accuse people of being afraid to come on the show with him, while not allowing others with a different view point to be on.

If Mr. Pratt visits this website, or if anyone listened to Rob Pratt's "sports report" this morning at 7:40a on KDKA Radio, below are corrections to his 2 or 3 minute report.
1. It's "Nyjer" not "Nigel" Morgan.
2. It's "Malkin" not "Malkim".
3. The US Open started/resumed play at 7:30a today, not 10:00a. 10:00a was when TV coverage on ESPN started.

- Fred "Time out for Sports" Honsberger -- Tom (The original Tom), 07:14:39 06/13/09 Sat [12]
June 12........Fred spent most of the three hours talking Hockey and Football.
He said he liked the NHL because the players, coaches are real gentlemen and do a lot for the community. The NFL is nothing but a bunch of thugs. This prompted a call from Curtis Martin's mom. She told Fred, "DON'T YOU EVER CALL MY SON A THUG! HE IS A TRUE GENTLEMAN!" Fred more or less hanged up on her. He later told his producer to never take a call from her again.
Fred also said that he loves hockey, he understands the game. A caller called in telling Fred that the Pens will win 3 to 1. Then Mr. "I understand the game" Honsberger asks the caller, "In regulation or overtime?" HUH? 3 to 1 in overtime?? Fred doesn't know if the puck is stuffed or blown up.
BTW, both my daughter and son-in-law met Curtis Martin** several times while at Pitt. They both said that he was and is a GREAT guy. Never any problems in his life. Referring to him as being a thug is an insult.
** Curtis James Martin, Jr. (born May 1, 1973 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) is a former American football running back. He is an alumnus of Taylor Allderdice High School in Pittsburgh and the University of Pittsburgh. Martin played in the National Football League for the New England Patriots and the New York Jets.

Dr. James Winer's show is a paid program, and KDKA plays a disclaimer about it being a paid program. Yet some of the other shows on Saturday, like the "Healthy Performance" hour and "Ask the Attorney", seem to me to be a 1-hour infomercial promoting respective business. They do say that it's sponsored by the business, but there's no indication that it's a paid program. So why isn't there a "paid programming" disclaimer with that program? Is it because Rob Pratte hosts the shows while Winer hosts his own show?
I'm just curious, because they all seem to be "paid programming" to me.

This was in the sports briefs in Tuesday's P-G:
WTAE has named Guy Junker its weekday sports anchor. Junker has been filling in since the station parted company with Jon Burton in December. Junker has been the station's weekend sports anchor since 2006 and occupied the same position from 1984-1990.
Channel 4 also hired a new weekend sports anchor, John Meyer, who comes from KCCI, the Hearst Television-owned station in Des Moines, Iowa. (WTAE is also a Hearst station.)
Meyer, a Pittsburgh native who graduated from Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa., will begin work at WTAE July 6.

- It's FSN's business -- Jolly Roger, 16:57:35 06/16/09 Tue [1]
I agree that FSN had the best coverage. Stan is the senior and best sports reporter in Pgh. And Dan Potash has been with the team day in, day out since the beginning of the season. You could clearly see the players recognized them as such and were more willing to talk to them. FSN has had great post-game shows all year, so it was the obvious place to go after the game (unless one wanted to see what was happening with the crazies on Carson Street). Stan's moment with Crosby and Guerrin together was the best moment of the post-game. You could clearly see the respect Crosby has for the "old" guy and this will be a recurring theme in the next couple of weeks with Guerrin in contract talks.
Outside of FSN, it was all so much fluff (which is okay in its own right).

- KD Middle Def? -- Disappointed, 15:42:50 06/16/09 Tue [1]
Tuning into KD's first "HD" news broadcast, and I'm pretty underwhelmed.
The new studio seems OK, and the standard anchor shot looks pretty sharp. However, what's with the weather? All the graphics (weather maps, radar, forecast) appear to still be in standard def. And when they cut to the "newsroom," which I assume is located in the same building, those are standard def shots as well. All field reports are still in standard def as well, but WTAE is the same way, so I sort of expected that.
I imagine the software KD uses to generate its weather graphics is not HD-compatible. Hopefully, this will change in time.
A long time ago, I posted on this board that after years of being a loyal KD viewer (dating to my parents' viewing habits), that I switched to WPXI because of it's HD news broadcast (flawed as their computer system or whatever seems to be.)
I'm not in the TV industry, so I don't know or understand any of the technical aspects of a telecast, but as a viewer who has been long awaiting KD's HD switch, I'm sorta disappointed so far.
Of course, this was the first day, so hopefully the broadcast will improve.

KDKA finally debuted its hi-def programming today. I caught the 5PM cast. Looked good but not spectacular. However, Kristine still whined, and Stacy still booted at least one word in every story he did. All the hi-def and new sets aren't going to make up for mediocre anchors who are mailing it in.

If she wants to go back on the air, why doesn't she work with her advertisers and fans to purchase air time on a station? She seems savvy enough to make a deal that will benefit the station, the advertisers, and herself.
For example, she could purchase some time on KHB. That station is mostly brokered programming, gets better ratings than her old station (WPTT), and has a suprisingly large range for a 5,000 watt station. Their prices will probably be cheaper than KDKA.

I decided to make a new thread, instead of posting in the one that was supposed to be about the positive things you like about Pittsburgh radio. A number of WYEP critics have come out of the woodwork (since that station is rarely discussed on this board), claiming that the staff is snotty, the music isn't as good as they think it is, and the station isn't "cutting edge". Not saying that some of those points aren't valid, but what would YOU do differently? Are any other stations in town playing such critically acclaimed artists like Wilco, The Kooks, Raul Malo, The Jayhawks, etc? That's fine if you don't like those artists - everybody has different tastes - but I'm glad they're at least trying to play something different than other Pittsburgh stations.

To some, this might not be a big issue. To me, it is a major issue.
KDKA-TV's new Web site (a cookie cutter from CBS) got rid of the city skyline in the weather box in the top left corner.
That skyline image screamed LOCAL. Why would anyone want to get rid of something that can take the cookie cutter look and customize it for each city?
So now, we're left with a site that looks like CBS in NY, Chicago or any other O&O across the country.
But, it's been obvious for awhile that the "hometown advantage" really isn't.
