- Alan Jennings -- Robert, 23:43:07 05/22/13 Wed [1]
Is it me, or does WPXI's Alan Jennings seem to try convey a tough guy image when reporting a news story. It seems to me that he quite often displays a mean streak and always gets the last word in with a somber condemning tone after completing his interviews. He seems to always be quite accusatory. I thought his job was to just relate the details of the story and not to be the judge and jury. Sometimes I feel that his reporting is slanderous. Maybe I'm wrong. How do others feel about Alan Jennings?

- Weirdness at KDKA -- Wake Up Pill, 21:28:53 05/22/13 Wed [1]
So KDKA has this story about a new pill that is supposed to help you wake up refreshed, etc. They said NEW pill. Yet the NY Daily News wrote about the same pill in 2008. Same manufacturer, everything. Why did they say it was new? To give it some kind of hook? It's a flat out lie.

- Hank Baughman still recovering -- P P-G, 11:13:20 05/19/13 Sun [0]
May 18, 2013 12:09 am
By Maria Sciullo / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Readers have inquired about former WPXI-TV news anchor Hank Baughman, a native of Westmoreland County who lives in Latrobe.
Until about two years ago, Mr. Baughman enjoyed an active lifestyle. He juggled radio duties at WSHH-FM, WHJB-FM and WJAS-AM until early September 2011.
At 69, he was a dedicated runner. But in the summer of 2011, he experienced chest pains before fainting while out on a run.
He was diagnosed as having atrial fibrillation -- an irregular, rapid heartbeat. His recovery after having a pacemaker inserted "was an unmitigated disaster," he said, and it was removed less than two months later.
Since then, it has been a struggle.
"I went from running three to five miles several times a week to barely being able to walk across a room. It was devastating ... ."
He underwent cardiac ablation in October to burn away damaged heart tissue. It stopped the fibrillations.
"I'm self-sufficient, just very weak," he said. "I haven't been able to regain my strength to this day."
He said he has done a little work with a Web startup and with advertising.
"I get calls from people out here in Latrobe who recognize me from appearances on television, and they are always kind enough to ask [about his health]."
Mr. Baughman broke into the Pittsburgh market on-air at KQV, when it was a well-known top 40s station in the 1970s. He later worked at Channel 11, often handling anchor duties at noon, 6 and 11.

It seems like every time I get ready to watch some of my favorite programming, the show I hope to watch has been replaced by insipid nonstop fundraising.I'm pretty much ready to give up and not ever tune in again. Between the cooking shows and round table discussions of boring topics I think I'm done.

I heard mention on The Fan the other day that Cam Sadler is now on the show "every Tuesday and Thursday."
Why?
The show is already a bit crowded. Anyone have any news as to why they're adding a fourth person two days a week? Is Sadler auditioning for a spot on the station elsewhere?

- Sunday Night TV Sports Talk -- O'Really, 06:03:22 05/20/13 Mon [-1]
WPXI has re-entered the Sunday night TV Sports Talk arena.
PXI introduced the use of tweets and scrolled them during the show. It features the panel of 'experts' as does KD. People associated with the KD show, which had grown fat and happy with no competition for a few years now, began to rip the Channel 11 offering on twitters. However, KD quickly changed its look on the screen, began to refer to their own emails and tweets they received and, more or less, began to do what they slammed PXI of doing. It has only been a few weeks now, but has anyone been watching either or both and what are your views? KD still runs a lot of ads during their show. Spend a few minutes talking and then a commerical with some god-awful bumper music. That show seems more to be a cash cow for KD than anything.
Maybe that is why PXI wanted to get into the market. Basically, cheap guests low production costs.

- How is Star 100.7 still on the air? -- Airwavey, 00:12:12 03/14/13 Thu [53]
Of all stations in the Pittsburgh market, I'm still amazed that Star 100.7 part of the CBS cluster, continues to be on the air...really is there a PD there? the air talent from the morning show with Bubba, midday with Alexander to afternoons with Grim, to Elista...these so called air talents or more likeley lack therof have no direction whatsoever. The morning show lacks any kind of professionalism, from Bubba not being able to talk without stuttering or stammering to Shelly's annoying laugh. They come off as a bad example of college radio, and I've heard better college radio than this station. The afternoon guy sounds like a robot and his presentation seems to be that he is way smarter than the average listener, very hard to listen to, and this night girl Elista....the PD must never listen or aircheck this trainwreck...her content is way over her head, she doesn't even know what she is talking about, that's when she can talk, like Bubba she slurs and stammers and sounds like a 12 year old girl wanting to be hip and cool...I feel better now, but really STAR is like the land of misfit radio jox...how these people can be working in market # 25 is unbelieveable. I've heard the rumour that maybe they are going to switch to the CBS AMP format and have one local jock. I hate to see local go away, but when you offer what they have, it sounds like a very good idea.

I realize your editors grouped "cars that crashed" stories together, but even the jerk who drove into the pool in Florida is nothing to laugh about. I actually thought. I almost vomited listening to Marty Griffin fawn over Joanna Doven this morning. Fawning of what a wonderful press secretary she was, and how she always was up front and answered questions. Also said she always returned phone calls. In what parallel universe?
Gimme a break. One of the worst press secretaries being fawned over by one of the worst reporters ever. Wonder why Marty failed to mention that he was invited to and attended the Huss-Doven wedding?

During Channel Four's early cast this morning (5/16), I heard either Janelle Hall or Michelle Wright say during a teaser, "Hear how we tracked down the suspect in a Mother's Day shooting." A few minutes later, Janelle did a live-in-studio piece on the shooting--IN NEW ORLEANS! WTAE had absolutely nothing to do with tracking down the suspect! How do they keep getting away with this crap?

Jack Shumway did an excellent job moderating the City of Pgh Mayoral debate. His questions were spot on, he kept pace and did not make himself the center of attention. KDKA management should be aware that this is the type of professionalism that we expect unlike the two Yahoos (MG & MP) who usually occupy the morning/afternoon talk mike. Way to go Shummy!

Watched Ms. Schafer perform her inaugural newscast this past weekend and came away impressed.
She had good pace, camera presence and transition between reads. Her initial performance was good.
Aside from a slight makeup "overdo", I hope she is not over-coached or taking cues from some incumbents.
Will be interesting to see how she does with a general assignment report.
She is just so young. At first I thought I was watching Kids Teen News........

- WPXI's The Final Word -- W, 09:17:34 04/29/13 Mon [37]
Tried to watch it last night. Was hoping for some competition for the 'Showdown' on KDKA but was pretty awful.
I understand it's supposed to be 'interactive' but I personally don't care to hear what some yinzer in a self made video has to say about the Pens (which was something along the line of telling the first round opponent 'your goin home'...). Add to that a Jim Krenn appearance talking about food, and a "Pittsburgh Dad" video, and it completed the train wreck.
Sadly it looked like what "The Fan" would be on television. Opening up the conversation for a bunch of generic thoughts.
Just curious if others had a different take than that. I hope they get better.

- Wendy Me, Me, Me! -- Foregone, 05:54:40 05/04/13 Sat [8]
A lot has been written here about Wendy Bell's proclivity for making herself the center of attention. I watch WTAE only rarely, but I recall about a year ago when, after all the others at the anchor desk had said their "good nights," Wendy quickly threw in a comment that ended with the word, "me." Then last night, I heard her open a story with the line, "I don't care how much you say you like it..." Having been a reporter, I would bet that 95% of those doing the same story would have said, "No matter how much you say you like it..." I think the "me, me, me" thing has become so ingrained in Wendy that it has become second nature.

- KDKA-TV 2's Weather Credibility -- Arrow Finger, 12:26:08 04/21/13 Sun [9]
I've been out of the Pittsburgh/SW Pennsylvania-area for sometime, so please pardon my ignorance on this matter, but how credible is KDKA-TV 2's weather forecasting?? As I try to keep up online, I've noticed only two meteorologists (Jeff Versyla and Dennis Bowman) and a non-meteorologist of 20+ years (John Burnett), as well as any freelancers who go on air regularly. Channel 4 has four meteorologists, while Channel 11 has at least three meteorologists for now. In short with the KDKA-brand (Ratings, Legacy, etc), are they THE weather team one would turn to for everyday forecasts, as well as severe weather info?? Also, does that Doppler of theirs just off the Parkway North even function?? I could be wrong, but it seems it's been about 15 years since there's been a live sweep during a newscast or with breaking news!!!

So, the other night, I happened upon an interview on WQED with Michael Bartley and Dan Rooney and his wife. I thought it would be interesting, since I've never heard Mrs. Rooney interviewed before. Settled in, all going smoothly -- and then -- Michael sent the program over to a young man with his hair STANDING STRAIGHT UP LIKE THIS and an odd bow tie, who was the "social media" person. OK, so you want to have audience interraction, take some tweets or whatever. WHY would you have a man dressed as a clown doing so? Couldn't Bartley simply have a screen in front of him? QED has become such a farce -- honestly could have been an SNL skit. The Rooneys deserved better.

I was surprised to hear the long lost John McIntyre on KDKA radio this morning. JMAC is subbing for Marty Griffin.
My question is: Are there no younger radio hosts in this market who need exposure and experience in talk radio? ... I contend that if I were in a coma for 20 years and just woke up and turned on KDKA nothing would have changed! Some like that but I think it limits what we hear from the same old same old on air guys.
Mac's guest was Dr. Wecht how is rehashing the JFK asassination, is there any thing new to report? ---the beat just goes on! Nothing new, no new voices, just old guys jabbering on and on.

Is anyone else bothered by Mike's inability to get most names right? I can't figured out if he is that inept or that he thinks this is part of his charm. He mispronouces almost everyones name or he can't recall the name. Today he called AJ Richardson "tatoo man".
It seems that he is unprepared even when it's a scheduled guest. He'll hackup the name as if it's the wildest name he's ever heard and then ask the guest if that's right. You'd think that he would have this straight. Also, once he's told the correct way to say it the very next time he will stumble over it again. I find this somehow childish and at the very least diresectful.
What's up with that?

During the five o'clock hour (and maybe before) you saw mostly Marty Griffin with the breaking news story that Ravenstahl fired Harper.
Ravenstahl will hold a news conference at six o'clock. Well, six o'clock came and went with no news conference, but you kept seeing Marty reporting the breaking news story that Ravenstahl fired Harper and that Ravenstahl will hold a news conference.
This scenario kept going on as much as the weather forecast. A few minutes to seven I switched to Channel 4 to get the lottery number. Suddenly Diane Sawyer was interrupted with Channel 4 local breaking news. They were covering Luke's new conference which just began.
I switched back to channel 2 to see how they covered it since they said Marty broke the story. WHAT??? No news conference coverage.
I went back and forth between 2 & 4 with 4 carrying the news conference and 2 showing CBS national news.
How the hell could Channel 2 devote a lot of their news cast to Marty Griffin reporting the same thing over and over and constantly saying that the mayor will hold a news conference. And then when the much promoted news conference takes place, channel 2 doesn't even carry it.
