Pittsburgh TV/Radio Discussion Board
Welcome. This is designed to be the kind of forum that the Post-Gazette used to have to discuss Pittsburgh TV and radio issues and to exchange opinions. No registration is required, but it is a moderated forum. That means posts will be reviewed before they appear on the board.
A few tips:
Do NOT snipe at other posters. Discuss the issues, but don't throw insults at other posters.
Do NOT tell anyone to "Get a life," which is guaranteed to get a post deleted.
Do NOT suggest that posters are critical of on-air personnel because "you're jealous."
Do NOT discuss the personal lives of on-air personnel unless it has some relevance to their work.
Behave responsibly and you'll never have a problem. It's easy so let's get going! You can contact the Moderator either through the "contact Forum Admin" link above or directly by e-mail at: karlsterling@gmail.com.

I assume the list of weather-related closings is sponsored, and that's why they have to do it.
Otherwise, why bother? The transit system is shut down because of the weather, so doesn't it stand to reason that your neighborhood bingo or kids' dance class isn't operating? Take a look outside. Are you really going to your karate class with more than a foot of snow on the ground?

Actually, none got it right with the more than double the amount of snow that fell compared to the predictions.

- Street Reporters Contracts/Work Days? -- O'Really, 13:34:16 02/08/10 Mon [1]
I was wondering just what kind of a workday do the street reporters have for the local stations. It seems some are on the air everyday and others don't seem to appear as often. For example, it almost seems to me that Alison Morris has a part time job at KD. Maybe I just am not watching when she is on, but just seems she is not on as often as she was when she worked the morning shift. Seems never on the air on a Monday, either. I know a number of the posters here think that is a good thing, but I was just wondering what kind of deal she has. Trina Orlando seems to be everywhere.

If it is true that the news never stops, what is the role of media, specifically KDKA radio, when a state of emergency is declared on a weekend and a wide range of your listening audience has only radio to rely on for news? Continue with your regular programming (Pratte talking about puppies and kittens with Dr Mike, Bergman helping a senior citizen sell a tzotchkie) or do you bring in your Monday through Friday news reporters and provide your listening audience with wall to wall coverage? Discuss.

Does it ever occur to the geniuses in local TV to go wall to wall after the governor declares a state of emergency? How often does that happen? Yes, I know some of the staff may have problems making it in. Yes, I know a lot of people don't have electricity and can't watch TV. But if not now, when? Especially on the weekend, when they don't have the excuse of canning the soaps or whatever else is on during the week and weeknights? Some people could suffer greatly as a result of not getting news on TV. Not everyone has batteries in their radio.

- RTN NETWORK (WPXI) -- Radio Chuck, 19:28:15 02/05/10 Fri [9]
We always are complaining about WPXI and their problems with the EXCITE computer system, but has anyone noticed the problems they have on the RTN network? I am an avid watcher of the channel for at least 9 hours a day. From issues like being off the air for 15-30 mins at a time to running a different feed on air, it can be quite frustrating.
Tonight, for instance, the A-team was to be on at 9PM and Rockford Files at 10PM. Instead, someone at the station had the wrong feed on air and it was running I Spy at 9 and Emergency at 10, which was already seen this afternoon at 3PM when they had the right feed on.
I called in and someone answered by the name "Dante" who supposedly runs the boards, and he had no idea what was going on and I should call back on Monday. Now that explains why there are so many problems on both channels, no one knows what they are doing.
Sorry for the rant, but has anyone else noticed the problems?

- Robert Mangino new KDKA radio evening show host -- Karl, 14:05:01 01/29/10 Fri [22]
Here's the official release:
January 29, 2009
NEWSRADIO 1020 KDKA NAMES ROBERT MANGINO WEEKNIGHT HOST
PITTSBURGH – NEWSRADIO 1020 KDKA has named Robert Mangino as weeknight talk host. On Monday, February 15, Mangino will take over the 6:00-10:00 PM show formerly hosted by current 12:00 Noon-3:00 PM host Mike Pintek.
Mangino, a resident of New Castle, PA, is the current weekday morning host at WKBN-AM 570 in Youngstown, Ohio. Mangino started at WKBN in 1996, and has also hosted an afternoon talk show at WKST-AM 1200 in New Castle.
“We’re very fortunate to have found Robert in our own backyard,” said KDKA program director Marshall Adams. “Robert is a stand-out radio host who understands Pittsburgh issues and relates extraordinarily well to Pittsburghers.”
“As a teenager in New Castle, I would dream of what it would be like to work at KDKA in Pittsburgh,” said Mangino. “Now – to be following the great talk show hosts like John Cigna and Fred Honsberger – and to work with Larry Richert, John Shumway, Marty Griffin and Mike Pintek – the dream has come true.”
Mangino’s show will be the bridge between the KDKA Afternoon News with Paul Rasmussen and Rose Ryan-Douglas, 3:00-6:00 PM, and The Jim Bohannon Show, 10:00 PM-1:00 AM.
NEWSRADIO 1020 KDKA is owned and operated by CBS RADIO. Find KDKA at 1020 on the AM dial; on HD-3 channels of KDKA-, WZPT- and WDSY-FM; online at KDKAradio.com and through mobile devices such as the iPhone, iPod Touch and the Blackberry.

Just a question for the crowd: Are we the only "major" city that does not have a smooth jazz station? Are we just not "cool" enough to support one? WDUQ is just ok from a jazz standpoint and all the other stations play oldies, more oldies and loud commercials for debt repair!
Does another sports blabberthon on KDKA FM indicate we welcome the overdose of blubbering about the Steeler's first round draft pick - let me guess their first topic -should it be an offensive guard or do we need another wide out?
Is there any more scuttlebutt about a sale of 860 AM and the FM side of the former WAMO? Do we need 3 or 4 stations selling miracle herbal potions to internally cleanse me?
I welcome your input to enlighten me about what I am missing on the radio dial.

This morning on the KDKA radio morning sports report, Rob Pratte informed his listening audience that the Atlanta Thrashers have traded "Eli" Kovalchuk to the New Jersey Devils. Now, I am familiar with Ilya Kovalchuk, one of hockey's premier players, but not his cousin "Eli".
For someone who claims to be a sports reporter, Pratte has no clue how to pronounce the names of hockey's most prominent athletes. He does not even seem to try to determine the correct pronounciation. This is the same guy who referred to Conn Smythe trophy winner Evgeni Malkin as "E-Jenny" for a year.
We can only have solace that Rob won't be calling the Olympic action for the Russian team in Vancouver.

I see the terrible getting their due on this page(and rightly so), but how can any forum critique a capable jock one way to an extreme, while excusing another?
Randy Baughman biggest problem was he isn't in the narrow demo that is the core audience. DVE is a lifestyle for these people who graduated between '77 and '87, and they won't let anyone into their social club older or younger. I don't know his music preference, but I think his talents on a 25-39 year old male station would be appreciated more.
Jim Colony is a good person, I know that. Jim couldn't time out his newscasts, and would repeatedly rush through the closing tags just to finish before the bed ended. Just sounded terrible. I heard that when he first returned, and 8 years later I still heard it on one of his last 1250 sportscasts. I hope someone helps him with that. I've seen no critics, but people applaud his return!
Randy was never anything but nice, just like Jim. I really think it's this generational social club.
I'd like to see someone on this forum name a talent in this market, outside their demo, that they appreciate. Someone they'd listen to, on a station they'd normally not listen to. Any takers?

- Pratt strikes again -- Gman, 01:46:45 02/01/10 Mon [1]
Rob Pratt, KDKA's chief hyprocrite, continued his long streak of hyprocritical comments on Saturday.
First, he begins discussing the 12 yoa who cold bloodily took a shotgun and killed a sleeping pregant woman and then went to school. Then he immediately began to blame the little monster's father. Why, because the father isn't doing TV spots talking about the case! Duh! Pratt logic strikes again. In fact, Pratt (obviously father of the year award material himself) slandered the man by accusing the man as the reason this little monster killed the woman. Pratt went on to comment the the little lad was probably upset because his father was involved with a younger woman.
Hmm, Rob I guess that means little Robbie should have taken an axe and expressed his dismay with his new mom, when you got married.
But, not to end his streak, Rob has on his friend, Ellen O'Day, owner of the Clairon Lodge, who bragged about how she was sued for not paying her bill and then filed bankruptcy to get out of it. Our boy, Rob, went on as if this deadbeat was some hero and gave her more air time then some of KD's air personalities. Of course, the company she owed the money to was the bad guy. Hmmm, in Rob's world, its ok to not pay your bills and rip off people you have a contract with all in the name of sticking it to the 'Man.'
All of this from the man who preaches family values and puts the former manager of gambling casino up on a pedestal like he was genius.....
Only on KDKA....

- What CBS Pittsburgh should've done to have B-94 compete with kiss -- B-94 fan, 00:26:58 01/22/10 Fri [20]
When B-94 was brought back i November 2007 CBS Pittsburgh should've invested in this format for the long hall. You just don't sign a station on and sit back and coast for 2 plus years To make B-94 proffitable They should've hit kiss where it hurts the most This is kiss's lack of local flavor. B-94 was always lively localized and it was interactive with listeners. To make people switch from Kiss to B-94 I would've:
1. Promoted the heck out of my station from day one with events and I'd offer insentives for listening an making the switch such as commercial free Mondays See Buck Head's new station in Detroit.
2. I would've had an air staff planned out for the station's return. I also would have hit the night clubs my first weekend back on the air.
3. I would have brought Dave Cook back to the morning show. He is a CHR vet who knows his stuff an he is very polished.
4. Maybe before giving up onB-94 completely I'd go a little mor urban leaning or I'd go more dance oriented
What do listeners like about the horrible unprofessional college sounding Clear Channel Crap known as Kiss
We must petition to keep B-94 on the air. I am looking for people to help me out hear. we have three weeks to do this an change corporate's mind. What do they want a station at a 2 in radings or do they want a station that might pull a 0. Why didn't they jus pull star for god's sake. We have too many hot AC's that soun the same around hear. Why would you go all sports without play by play rights and also without a major radio network like FSR or ESPN to tie into. I give the new fan three months and then let's bring back the B. a third time because you know what they say a third time's a charm. .

- The official release from CBS re: The Fan 93.7 -- Karl, 14:25:13 01/19/10 Tue [9]
SPORTSRADIO 93.7 THE FAN, PITTSBURGH’S ONLY FM SPORTS STATION,
COMES TO TOWN ON MONDAY, FEBRUARY 15
Most Popular Music From B94 To Be Featured on Star 100.7
CBS RADIO Pittsburgh announced today it will debut the market’s first FM sports radio station on Monday, February 15 beginning at 5:30AM. SPORTSRADIO 93.7 The Fan has assembled a host of expert analysts and commentators to provide area listeners with a lineup of “all sports…all the time.” Available on-air, online at www.937thefan.com, as well as streamed live on a variety of mobile devices such as the iPhone, iPod Touch and Blackberry, The Fan will operate under the call letters KDKA-FM.
93.7 The Fan will be locally programmed by veteran radio executive Terry Foxx who most recently was program director for ESPN Radio in Bristol, Conn. Foxx has been working closely with CBS RADIO’s Mark Mason on the station’s presentation. Mason was the programming architect of the country’s first all-sports station, WFAN in New York, when it debuted in 1987.
Michael Young, Senior Vice President and Market Manager of CBS RADIO Pittsburgh, said, “SPORTSRADIO 93.7 The Fan is being built for Pittsburgh’s sports fans who are simply the best in the country. We’ll feature an array of opinionated, compelling and very talented local talk-show personalities who will be highly engaged in discussions and commentary driven by our listeners.”
Veteran NewsRadio 1020 KDKA Sports Director Jeff Hathhorn will assume the same position for the FM outlet and provide updates and reports from the field along with Kalena Bell and Jim Colony. The station’s lineup and complete roster of talent will be announced prior to the launch of the station.
Added Foxx, “It is been a privilege and an honor to create an all-sports FM radio station in Pittsburgh. The on-air presentation will be unique to our market, and our presence will be felt on game days and at major sporting happenings all over town.”
Launching along with the station will be an in-depth website (www.937thefan.com) where fans can access an array of text, audio and video about their local sports teams and the national storylines, as well as complete listings of sports scores and schedules. Further interaction with the station will be made available through blogs from 93.7 The Fan on-air personalities, message boards, and community groups.
In a related announcement, CBS RADIO Pittsburgh said it will blend B94’s popular hits format with Hot AC STAR 100.7 effective immediately. The music mix of STAR 100.7, will feature current hits from artists like Lady Gaga, Daughtry, Kelly Clarkson and the Black Eyed Peas plus favorites from the 90’s and 2000s like Pink, the Dave Matthews Band, Beyonce, Coldplay and Justin Timberlake.
Bubba, a longtime fixture on the B94 morning show, will move to the same time-period on STAR along with current hosts J.R. Randall and Shelley Duffy. B94’s Melanie Taylor will host midday’s on STAR (Monday-Friday 9:00AM-2:00PM) with current STAR personality Scott Alexander anchoring weekday’s from 2:00-6:00PM.
“It’s a new decade and this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create a super pop music station for the audiences of both B94 and STAR 100.7,” said Keith Clark, Vice President, Programming, CBS RADIO Pittsburgh. “Pittsburghers have grown up with B94, but the pop music audience today shares its time between B94 and STAR 100.7. If you like B94 and you like STAR but flip back and forth, you will love this blended station.”
About CBS RADIO Pittsburgh

Has anyone seen KDKA Radio's new website? No doubt the layout is a format provided by CBS to it's news/talk stations, but wow, the home page is terribly cluttered and busy. With redesigns, isn't the point to improve?
Two things that really jump out: with a new site, conventional wisdom says there are opportunities for improvement. KDKA seemed to have missed the boat on (1) local news. The site still still doesn't feature as much local news as it should (compare with the three TV station sites).
And (2) the site's photo gallery still has lots of pictures from station events, but every one of them is titled/captioned "002.jpg." Unless you were there, there's no way of telling who or what you're looking at. Does this make you want to attend the next event? Years ago all photos on the site were captioned, so at least you could feel a connection to what you were viewing.
It's a shame that with a "new" site, the station didn't take advantage of the opportunity to do things better.
Oh - and KDKA has removed its history narrative from the site as well. Other heritage n/t stations (such as WBZ, KYW) still feature this info. Unusual move for America's "first" station.
Thoughts?

- Another Loss to the KDKA Family -- Insider, 20:49:56 01/19/10 Tue [1]
Former KDKA anchor
eporter John Cater has passed away. The cause of his death is still unclear, but it appears to be medical related.
John was an original anchor of the KDKA morning news on Pittsburgh's CW when it premiered in 2005. He coanchored the show with Sonni Abatta when it was still a two hour show. John would also report for the later newscasts. John left KDKA a couple years ago to take a freelance reporter job in Atlanta.
Jon was a very friendly person who always had a smile on his face. Just a couple months ago, John was in Pittsburgh and stopped by KDKA to visit with his old friends. He appeared happy and healthy, which makes his death even more shocking.

- Has anything happened with Ellis Cannon? -- Talk Radio Fan, 12:43:30 01/11/10 Mon [33]
I was listening to 104.7 during Rush Limbaugh's show today and during the news break it was said Michael Savage would now come on at 6 p.m.
What has happened to Ellis Cannon?

Wonder if the public radio side is too liberal for the current leadership at Duquesene?

- KDKA's Jeffey V.-- not cute -- Mike G., 20:59:07 01/06/10 Wed [23]
Is it just me or is anyone else sick and tired of the Jeff Verszyla's lack of professionalism? From the baby pictures in the background of the weather set to ever-annoying drum beat at the end of each newscast to wearing tennis shoes with a suit-- just do your job and stop trying to be so cute-- you aren't. Come on, KDKA, you have two gems-- Jon and Dennis-- what are doing with this loser?

- New reporter on KD AM? -- Tom (the original Tom), 07:34:39 01/11/10 Mon [3]
Who's the new reporter on KD with the last name of James? It ain't Dave and it sure as hell isn't Dennis!
Seriously, when did he come on board? I notice now he's the one to get to stand in the dark at 5 a.m. at the spot where an incident did happen or will happen, but not when he's there.

- A few questions -- Matt, 14:51:24 01/11/10 Mon [1]
Heard on 104.7 that Mike Savage will now be live 6 to 9 PM.
If that's the case, what happens to Ellis' show?
Second question. Does anyone know when the Pirates contract is up with 104.7 ?
Third question. If Savage goes till 9pm , will they also move Jerry Doyle (great show) up to get all 3 hours of his show? That leaves 1 hour to fill till Coast to Coast comes on. Any ideas out there?
