Pittsburgh TV/Radio Discussion Board
Welcome. This is designed to be the kind of forum that the Post-Gazette used to have to discuss Pittsburgh TV and radio issues and to exchange opinions. No registration is required, but it is a moderated forum. That means posts will be reviewed before they appear on the board.

A few tips:

Do NOT snipe at other posters. Discuss the issues, but don't throw insults at other posters.

• 6:30 KDKA Newscast - August 30, 2009 -- A83, 16:11:59 08/30/09 Sun [27]
  I felt really badly for Trina Orlando. Apparently, she is the only one that cares about a quality product for KDKA.
  
  Jon Burnett and Bob Pompeanii were unwatchable.
  
  First, before the weather, Burnett goes off in some diatribe about some kid that won some running race. And then he said that the kid's time had to be fast because his son came in second last year and his son's time was such and such. It was ridiculous.
  
  Then Pompeanii fumbled through the sports and Burnett was heard laughing and clapping in the background for each of Pompeanii's mistakes.
  
  Pompeanni gave Neil Walker's stats for the last 10 day and a huge whistle was heard from Burnett.
  
  Then, Burnett gave the five day forecast and Pompeanii clapped and whistled for him.
  
  Orlando appeared embarrassed at the end of the braodcast and it was easy to see why.

  I was so moved by the Kelly Frey article in today's P-G online. For those who haven't read it, due to some brain abnormalities, her son, her first pregnancy, will probably end sadly -- he has only a slim chance of survival. However, where there is life, there is hope, so my prayers will be for all to be well.
  
  That said -- I wondered why this was my business? On the one hand, I have watched her newscast recently and did notice her pregnancy. I can imagine viewers would be sending her congratulations, so a "heads-up" on the situation would make the parent's life easier.
  
  On the other hand, this is a deeply personal, family situation. Obviously, she and her husband chose to come forward with the story. But does this cross the line? Are we privy to too much about these news anchors and their families?
  
  I wondered about the wisdom of Wendy Bell telling the world about her sons. Their own safety, in terms of crazy people, would be one reason that perhaps she should have drawn the line.
  
  I guess what I wonder is: How much should we know about the people who read our local news, weather, sports? And why do their employers not draw professional boundaries for those (like Bell) who don't know when they're probably going too far?

  Time and again, lately, Marty Griffin has had convicted felon Frank LaGrotta on his show, allowing the former legislator to get on his high horse and act like the moral majority, in the latest gem Monday, basically calling Tom Ridge a liar.
  Hey, Frankie boy, those who live in glass houses...Must be though these days not to be able to get your relatives ghost jobs on taxpayer dollars.
  It makes me sick that LaGrotta thinks he knows the ins and outs of the current legislative scene. And it makes me even sicker that Griffin gives him a soapbox.
  Shame on you, Marty. Then again, snakes stick together.

  According to my Webster's dictionary, one of the definitions of exclusive is "given or belonging to no other."
  I point that out to the fine folks at KDKA-TV, because they must not know what the word exclusive is. They continue to tout their interview with "PittGirl" as an exclusive. Funny, she also gave interviews to the P-G, the BCT, and others.
  It's not an exclusive. Stop calling it that.
  And honestly, in the grand scheme of things, is it worth crowing over that you got an interview with "PittGirl"???
  C'mon, gimme an "exclusive" with Obama, not with a local blogger.

  Rob is running a current commerical for one of his clients..a local cyber school and is talking about the "teacher of the month"..a graduate of Slippery Rock and who is working on her Masters' Degree at CLAIRTON University. Maybe I am not hearing him say Clarion correctly...but it sure sounds like he says "Clairton". I know Clairton has a good Class A football team, but don't think they award post-grad degrees, too.   Okay, this might not belong on the local tv blog, but just wondering if anyone else checked out how Sonni is doing at her new gig in Orlando. I watched the stations site a few times (btw..makes anything Pittsburgh stations have up look like crap) and the style of presentation they have seems to really have brought out a new level in her work. The station seems to not give the anchors a whole lot to say between stories and with most of thier reporting being done over the video rather than facing a camera and reading the script. She seems very comfortable and just looks better on screen than when she was working here. This could be a big step for her moving up the Fox network. IMHO

  It appears to me that almost every Radio/Tv personalities and program managers in Pittsburgh have been both criticized (mostly) and praised.
  But when it comes to Johnny Mac, the posts have been 99 44/100 critical, and they float! If his vocabulary and subjects on TV/radio were the same as it is in his blog, the 4/100 would be gone.
  Posters reply to the criticism about the others (mostly Marty) that the more he gets, the better management likes him. He brings the listeners. I believe this, but if management wants this type of on air personality, then why has every radio and TV station that has has Gutter Mouth on their airwaves have shown him the door??

  Been watching the game and listening to Tunch and Bill on the radio. I must say Billy is in midseason form already....unable to see possession, giving the wrong players credit, incorrect spots, and generally fumbling around with the broadcast. I like Bill in a strange way, but I must say this is getting kind of old season after season. Bill seems to have an issue with his eyes, his spotters or both.

• What's with the "We'll be back in XXXX minutes" on KD? -- Time Czech, 10:06:51 08/16/09 Sun [3]
  For the past couple of weeks, everytime a talk show host goes to a break he'll say that we'll be back in, and he mentions the minutes in which they will be back. Pratte even goes as far as to put an "exactly" in front of the number of minutes.
  Anyone know who's idea this was, and why??

• Bill Flannigan exposes Marty Griffin -- Sleepless in Seattle, 09:03:24 08/13/09 Thu [11]
  Since Marty changed his mind about the G 20 Summit being good for Pittsburgh, he's been playing sound bites from the movie, "Battle in Seattle."
  According to Marty this is what happened to Seattle when the meeting was held there.
  This morning Bill Flannigan was on his show. Marty preceded Flannigan's introduction by stating that Bill is paid to say good things about the upcoming meeting.
  He then introduced Flannigan and played one of his soundbites for him, explaining this happened in Seattle, it will happen in Pittsburgh. Flannigan told Marty that the movie wasn't about a G20 Summit being held in Seattle, it was a WTO (World Trade Organiztion) meeting.
