Can't you just see the talks with advertisers, who say: DON'T YOU DARE MESS WITH SUCCESS! I DON'T CARE IF THEY ARE LAME, HALT, OLD, UNIMAGINATIVE AND BORING! WE GET RESULTS, SO DON'T F---K WITH IT! NOTHING IS BIGGER THAN THE STEELERS AND THEIR GUYS.

So, as to not denigrate our bros/sisses who have rapped the boys so far, surely expressing their hearts, what happens if Tunch, Wolf and Billy are fired tomorrow morning? Then what, then who?

Billy is so darn likable, one forgets he hasn't had an original thought since the eighth-grade picnic (but be hard on evaluating your own attitude in light of ageism). Tunch and his goodie-goodie act sells in Pittsburgh, where eight out of 10 or so were schooled by Sister St. John of the Cross (better be good, I have a ruler and a paddle).

But the gem is Wolf, surely more so on the talk show than during the games. He is not only a great communicator ala Madden (John, not Mark), but he knows everything about football, sees and analyzes fast, and talks like a street-smart enthusiast, not talking down. But, and this is key, he is smart enough to stay out of the way of the Steelers during games. They are the show not him. A raft of throw-away lines to keep it light -- fans like light and fun, not deep and dark -- is about the right note. There's not a whole lot to say about a play on the fly but news -- he coulda got 10 more yards if he had cut left insteada right. That's not really about Wolf -- it's the Steelers, as it should be.

So, what are the bright ideas for replacements? Remember that even if you came up with William Shakespeare, John Madden, Dick Enberg, Vin Scully, Myron Cope, Mike Lange and Bob Prince, the advertisers would be asking: They're new, there's no guarantee of success, we pull the plug in a month if we lose a fraction of a point in listeners. LIKE WE SAID, DON'T MESS WITH SUCCESS, WE KNOW WHERE YOU LIVE.

The formula for success is mysterious and delicate. You mess with one inch of it, you may lose a mile of it. And there, I think, is your reluctance for change. And don't wait for the culture to figure out for a long while that football should stop because it is killing people.
