- What do you think? -- No name, 08:54:22 10/30/05 Sun [2]
I just figured out why I get blamed for everything. There is a lady in my city whose daughter no longer competes except once in a blue moon in a local pageant. But, she LOVES the bash boards. She goes onto all of them bashing everybody out there with her local IP that clearly spells out the name of the city (a big, well-known city). My daughter and my friends daughter are well-known on the national circuit to be from this particular city. We are the only ones who compete nationally from this city or state for that matter. So, when this lady goes onto the boards and bashes, people can't help but think it's us. I know that the owners of the bash boards look at the IP's and try to guess who says what. It's one of the perks of being a board owner. My fear is that the pink board owner is a well-known circuit mom with connections and its hurting my daughter in pageants. What do you think? Could this lady be ruining our reputation in pageants?

From the retoucher who started this challenge idea. Click in and I will introduce myself. -- Ken, 17:05:43 10/28/05 Fri [9]
My name is Ken and I do retouch for Donna, Troy and Jennifer. I have done so for years and they are the only people I work for. I am not looking for any other clients. They have been loyal to me and I shall remain so to them. That said, let's get started.
I started this challenge idea as a reality from a comment someone had made as a passing thought in another post. There are now several threads running about the idea and one of them has offered to begin the challenge and supplied an e-mail address for interested parties. They also stated some guidelines and such and seem to be trying to fast-track this rather than do it in such a way that everyone has a say in how it works. As I have said in other posts, I believe this to be a joint effort that everyone should agree on before proceeding. I introduced myself so that everyone would know that I'm not new to this and, hopefully will regard it as more than just a ploy. I have nothing to lose and nothing to gain rather than to protect mothers from spending their hard earned money on pics that are sub-par to the standards they expect.
I encourage competition as long as it continues to grow the pageant industry and not diminish it. We all have pics that aren't as good as we wish they were for whatever reason. The trick is to make those the exception. Right now, I fear that the influx of people trying this out to make a quick buck is diluting the talent pool. Let's try to refine the product once again to a level of excellance and not become complacent and accepting of a lesser product.
I'm sure that some of you will be inclined to respond with comments about me rather than the contest and, if that is the case, please do it in another posting. I want to try to keep this to retouchers discussing guidelines and such rather than a forum to critisize any retoucher who makes a comment.
The e-mail address I have set up for all of us to send to is "therealretouchchallenge@comcast.net". I will forward any and all e-mails that are sent there(unless otherwise specified) to all retouchers who wish to receive them. I am hoping that, at least, all of the bigger name retouchers will participate and some of the up and comers who want to see where they are. I don't want you all to think I'm being vain and claiming any kind of superiority to any of the rest of you, but I just wanted to point out that I'm not a newbie. We all know who the big names are and that there is not one retoucher for each photographer. So let's not be coy or play dumb.
I'll stop this post for now and add a suggested format in a post to follow. We can then take your suggestions and refine them from there. I look forward to meeting you all even if it is just through e-mail. Thank You.

News About POP MAGAZINE -- Caryl, 10/25/05 12:07:46am
Hi everyone... With a saddened heart I'm announcing that I have Sold - Pride of Pageantry...(aka POP Magazine) ...
As some of you know, I have had a small health concern lately, nothing very serious mind you, just something that keeps getting worse and worse with stress. As owner of POP, I wore many "hats". Going from Receptionist to being Layout and Design, I did it all..... It was getting harder and harder on me with each issue....
I spent many sleepless nights, trying to fix the problem, trying to come up with something that would lessen the stress and help me keep the magazine....but I wasn't very successful at coming up with ideas.... I even had quite a few friends offer to help lighten the load of the magazine by taking on different jobs so I wouldnt have to do them, but being like I am I still had to have "my hands" in everything as usual anyway.
I have Sold the magazine to a wonderful lady named Carla Creekmore, she lives in AZ and has been in the Pageantry business for over 10 years, either as a judge, a contestant's mother or as the Director of her own pageant.
I have known Carla for about 6 years, and I know she will be a great "mommy" to my "baby".... I believe she will love it as I have... she's a hard worker, a very creative person, and loves kids... I remember her pageant as being "always for the kids"..... I always felt like she had put 110% into it..... and I am sure she will do the same with POP
She has some great ideas in mind ... I know her first change is to add a new prize for Cover... $200 CASH... and it starts with ALL entries for the Winter issue, not just with the Nov 15th deadline...... Another thing she is adding is a Kid's Korner section to the magazine.... Articles & Interviews that kids will love to read and will interest them too, not just their moms.....
And with that said, I would like to ask you all to support her as you have supported and promoted me.... enter her contests, take ads out, write articles and subscribe to her wonderful magazine.... Look for new & exciting things to be added to POP
I have met a lot of great people though pageants, some of you have become close friends...... so I am sad and happy in the same breath about POP.... I have told people "its like giving up my child" when asked how I feel about selling it.... I started POP as a newsletter for the West Coast, it's "grown up" a lot in the 5 years that its been published.
I will continue to do the PAGEANT COVERAGES for awhile, until Carla has gotten the first couple of issues printed, and then she will take over this also....
When I accepted Carla's offer for the magazine, I will be honest, I cried and cried, not knowing if I was doing the right thing... oh I knew Carla was the right person, I just didnt know if this was right for ME.... but after many meetings with Carla and having a few special friends to talk to, I now know this is the best for all of us....
Please contact me at the email below... if you have any concerns.....
THANK YOU for all your support and love and friendship....
Caryl

DEAR SUZANNE: -- No name, 17:35:01 10/24/05 Mon [3]
I have read all this and I have to take a minute to say what you did was wrong. I work hard for my money and sent you my deposit before the deadline so I could take advantage of the "discount". I receive a letter one week before competition after hotel arrangements were made, travel arrangements (non-refundable) were made, among many other misc expenses including purchasing 10 gifts with bags to give to YOUR outgoing royalty.
This letter told me, a rather new pageant mom, that I have to pay another $200 for my dd to even have a chance at a title. You did not allow, like most pageants to choose one of the several overall titles, we HAD to do them all or nothing. Why? Why the points? I will tell you why the points, incentive, actually more like a no win situation, you do not enter, your dd does not stand a chance...you knew perfectly well that mom's will pay the price to assure their dd every opportunity to win. That put about 18,000 in your pocket and you did not care who or how many you put that pressure on that did not have that extra $200. You knew where the weak spot is with the pageant moms, bet you laughed all the way to the bank at these moms.
This is like the car sales-man selling you a car for $200, you hand him the money with no refund policy only for him to tell you that you the tires were not included they will be another $200.
I know for a fact that two girls received the same scores in your pageant, one did the overall and one did not do the overall. The girl that did the overall got a mini, the girl that could not afford to do the overalls took a division. You lied to me, you told me that the points would not cause that affect. I am not mad over my dd's placement, I AM mad at myself for falling for your dishonesty and deception, now realizing after trusting your word, that my dd never stood a chance if I did not enter the $200 overalls. It is sad that those girls that won titles on their own merit were robbed of them as a result of your hunger for the almighty $$$. One beautiful young girl in the 8-9 yr old division was damaged by your yearning for the $$. She earned her title on her own merit only for you to rip the glory & title due to your non-affective point system. How that young girl must feel, only to now be bashed on the boards due to your greed.
I have just finish placing my dd's $1,300.00 build-a-bear in a gold case with a brass label reading "An Expensive Lesson Learned". You were deceitful and that is the truth. Next year please try the honest route, put your overalls that you can purchase to win points on your website and ppw.

This was taken from their site.
Before the trolls (erm...mommies) come and start their sh*t, I thought I'd tell ya all why I'm here. I'll try to keep it short.
I have been lurking the VOY boards for a few years, checking out the drama and goings on in the pageant world. It started when my daughter in-law was doing research for a psych class and was directed to "bash boards". It was like a bad accident, I should have turned away but couldn't.
Aside from the hilarity potential, these moms and their daughters are a bizarre slice of humanity that can't be witnessed anywhere else; better than any soap opera. Also, I work with a child advocacy group (perveted-justice) whos main function is to keep child predators off the internet and away from our kids. Seeing what these pageant moms do in the way of displaying their children like prime meat gives me information that I can use for helping others not make the same mistakes.
Anyway, when I looked at VOY this morning and saw that the moms from hell had found this message board, I just couldn't help myself.
I came to witness the fireworks, shake my head and snark a little...maybe a lot. Just figured I would let ya know why I know a bunch about the pageant crap and the fools that will sooner or later make their way here.
edited to add: Notice how many guests are in this thread? Those mommys are just getting geared up, probably taking time to look up the words in the posts. Give them time to down a six pack of beer and grab an extra pack of smokes. They'll be here.

Stop having pageants in Arkansas. We are sick and tired of Alisha going in there and running the show. If you feel it is absolutely necessary to have your pageant in the metropolitan mecca of Arkansas, do us all a favor and get judges from states that do NOT border Arkansas. I'll tell you right now, we won't attend a pageant in Arkansas where Alisha and her crew are going to be. And, I am certainly not alone in this feeling. You will have kids, but they will only be Alisha's kids and you'll never survive that way.
