hello peeps!

just up for some 'alternative therapy' advice...... had some blood tests done and the results came back that i (thanks to my surgery 4 years ago now) the results have shown that i am pre-menopausal, and my hypothalmus (sp) has basically gone up the shoot!!

so i am suffering with some really bad hot flushes throughout the day/ evening..... luckily, so far they are not waking me up at night!!.......... and i have the tell tale certain very tender bits of body!!i have tried sage, which does help somewhat, apart from when i miss a drop!! lol then BANG!! it's all back!

i have also been informed by a friend that i am quite irritable of late.... i'm guessing this goes along with it! i know if i go to the doc's he will just want to try me with HRT.... and although it works for many, my concerns with starting on it so early in life are worrying me, with it slightly increasing the risks of certain cancers the longer one is on it! (and i don't want to even consider the whole cancer thing again!!)

the only problem is, these hot flushes (oh and my migraines have increased in regularity too)are really quite debilitating, and i find sometimes i just have to sit out in the cold ar by a fan at work or whatever, but because i am young for menopausal symptoms, the peeps at work don't really have any sympathy what so ever and it's as if they don't believe me.
so. in turn, that makes me even more irritable!! LOL
oh well.... lol shall i just get to the point!?
i'm looking for something i can do/take long term to help out with the flushes, migraines, irritability etc..... any ideas for a natural HRT?

i'll be grateful for some advice!!
love
sam xxxxx

Ahhh, just posting to send you some support Sam. I had a full hyst 4 years ago when I was 41, so a bit older than you ... but even so, young for menopause. I couldn't go on HRT for 4 months so got all the symptoms in one fell swoop and it was ghastly, so know what you must be going through. Hot flushes are the absol pits as they disrupt your sleep and make you feel so yucky during the day too!

It is difficult going through this early because as you say, most of your friends aren't at that stage and just haven't got a clue. And when you try and explain they think you are just a right old moaner! LOL

I hope some of the garden folk can give you some advice ... I'm sure Whitewolf will come up with some herbal preps you could try. Its also worth doing a Google search for natural remedies or look on Amazon for Natural Menopause books.

I use a natural progesterone cream as well as the oestrogen HRT (which is a low dose one) which might help you. With HRT you have to way up the fact that oestrogen is also protective for the heart and bones etc and often the advantages can balance the disadvantages. Probably better to have a few years on it now and then come off it then, than the other way round although if there is a strong family link with certain cancers this might not be advisable. I suppose a doctor would be able to tell you that.

And also when they say HRT increases the risk of certain cancers ... well they might say it increases it by say 50% which sounds a lot. But when you actually look at the statistics, it might really mean that out of 100 women instead of 2 getting it, 3 get it. In other word one extra woman over say 10 years will get it out of 100. Seeing it that way puts it more into perspective.

Controlling stress is very important during this time .. and you have had a fair amount of that recently! So lots of sleep, relaxation etc helps plus regular exercise and diet can also play a bit part. Lots of foods act as phyto-oestrogens and can help to raise your blood levels, such as soya, pulses and oats.

Anyway, hope you feeling more yourself soon Sam :)

Love Rowan x

Hey up Sam (((cooling hugs))). Sage would have been my first choice... at least 2 cups a day to get the best results, morning and night (to make a change from sage tea you could try making a sage infused wine / tonic and sip a small glass in the evening). Do you find your headaches are less when you are using the sage?
Mint tea is cooling, and might help with the headaches too. Did you find the catnip and peppermint tea blend (Mintea) helped with the flushes? or were they not so bad back then? The mints are rich in antioxidants too :) even better, blend with Stinging Nettles too, rich in vitamins and minerals!

Red Clover contains particularly high levels of phytoestrogens and is said to 'trick' the body into thinking it's producing more oestrogen than it is. You could try red clover tea, very tasty blended with raspberry leaf, or blackcurrant leaf. Blackcurrant leaf would blend well with the sage too, and is said to help with breast tenderness.
Soy (and soy products) is also rich in phytoestrogens - other foods which are a good source of phytoestrogens include flaxseed, licorice, chick peas, pinto beans (many of the beans) and pomegranate mmmmmmmmmmm
Evening Primrose Oil is particularly important as it provides gamma linoleic acid, which the bdy needs to make oestrogen.

Geranium and Rose are hormone balancing oils which you could try incorporating into a bath, or a massage oil blend, or an oil you could dab onto your pulse points / sniff when you feel the need... and for their uplifting qualities try Bergamot and Neroli. Ylang-Ylang and Jasmine are both good anti-depressant oils but use in small quantities as they can cause a headache in larger doses, and seeing as you're prone to headaches the other oils might be best. I would thinkg Lavender would be good for you - good for soothing headaches as well as lifting and calming moods.

I hope some of this has made sense - and helps! - am feeling a bit blurry headed, busy with pyrography tonight so all smoked out lol.
x Blessings x

Hi Sam

I'm 36 and have been told that I am going through the pre-menopause too. I get fairly random hot flushes (sadly, wine definitely causes them!) and my skin is very dry.

My local herbalist put me on a mix of agnus castus and dong quai. I'm currently trying some ayurvedic remedies but think I'll go back to the Agnus/Dong combination.

My gynae has put me on locally-applied oestrogen and I feel uneasy about that. I have decided to give it a fair crack for 6 months and if I see no benefit come off it and manage as best I can without.

One thing that might be a good idea if you don't opt for HRT is to ask your GP for a bone density test. You have to go to hospital for one but they test you early on, then every year or so just to check there's no problem.

As for your work colleague - mine just have no idea what to say, and as is usual in those sort of circumstances, they joke about it. But they're getting used to me flinging the window open!

Good luck with managing this next phase of your life.

Mountain Hare
