Subject: My Justin Timberlake CD Listening Party & Concert Review

Tuesday was my last day of summer break before returning back to work, and it just so happened that Mr. Justin Timberlake was making an appearance at the Best Buy near my house. Sounded like an entertaining way to spend the day. I'll type up a review of the listening party he did at the Best Buy and his House of Blues concert in the reply.

[> Best Buy CD Listening Party Review ----> -- Janelle, 00:38:38 08/25/06 Fri [1]

8/23/06 – Justin Timberlake CD Listening Party @ Best Buy - Downers Grove, IL

So, Justin is doing a handful of dates in major cities as a promo tour for his upcoming album release. Tickets to the concerts in almost all cities sold out literally before you could buy them. The reason being is so few were available because Best Buy/Samsung took 400 per show. These are club shows, so capacity isn’t that great. Tix were selling on Ebay for $1000(I kid you not!). So, I knew about this promo and how it worked. The morning of the show, a local radio station announces the location of a Best Buy, and the first 200 people get into an afternoon listening party/Q&A with Justin at the Best Buy and get a lanyard to exchange for a pair of free tickets to the night’s concert. I assumed it would take place at one of the Best Buys in the city because they are the closest to the venue. I decided to set my alarm to listen to the early morning announcement, but figured it was pointless because by the time I got into the city during morning rush hour, all tix would be gone. Seemed like wayyyy too much work. Alarm goes off, but I decide to go back to bed. Then my cell rings, and it’s a friend telling me they’re doing it at my local Best Buy. I rolled out of bed, and was out of the house in 5 mins. I got there about 7:45am, and was 53 in line. We had to bake in the hot sun in that line till 10am(who knew the sun was that hot in the morning!). At 10am, they slowly paraded us through and gave us a wristband(200 blue ones for 21+). Then, they drew 2 of our names for a spot to sit next to Justin on a couch during the afternoon’s listening party. We were told to leave and come back by 2:30. Went home and came back at 2:15 for more lines. I was toward the back because I had gotten there late, but I didn’t care. Around 3, they started letting us in with security scrutinizing us. Blue wristbands from the morning got in first, and I settled in about 8 rows deep. All day people had been lining up to try to at least squeeze into the listening party, and everyone in that line got in as well. The place was a zoo. At 3:20 Johnny Wright comes out and goes over the strict rules of absolutely no cameras, and NO cell phones out when any tracks are being previewed. He tells us they’re running behind because Justin was caught in traffic(what a surprise...traffic in Chicago?). A few minutes before he comes out, they preview the bonus track you get if you purchase the album through Best Buy. The track is called “Pose” and Snoop Dogg sings on it. It was alright. Justin finally appears on stage at 4. He has the DJ spin “My Love.” Meanwhile, Johnny Wright is in the back of the crowd with a mic rounding up people that want to ask Justin a question or two. Some typical corny questions, but they were at least funny. Then, they played “Love Stoned” which is my new favorite song. It’s got all the fun beats of “SexyBack,” but his voice isn’t so digitally filtered. More questions…what’s his favorite song on the album. “I’m not bias, I like them all. It’s a new one every week.” Some girl in the back got on the mic to announce that her mom ditched her in the back while she was up in the front few rows. Everyone was like, “huh, that’s bad!” So Justin mentioned that sounded like a Jerry Springer thing. The whole crowd was chanting “Jerry, Jerry, Jerry!” Justin jumped into the audience a few rows deep so the mom could speak her side of the story. It was entertaining. Next question was what’s his fave city to perform in. Really, who asks that and gets an honest answer? What’s he supposed to say? That’s pretty much what he said, and said he wouldn’t lie. Justin took a question from a girl in the front who was trying to get his attention. It was something about how she was at CFTC and got all the guys’ autographs except Justin’s. So Justin agreed to sign something for her. Played “What Goes Around” which is a ballad. It was alright(my opinion changes after I see it live that night). Next, they draw one of our names for 3 free Samsung phone. We put our cell numbers on the entry form, and Justin dials the winner. They cranked “SexyBack” as we left. Blue wristbands were to go get in LINEEE in the hot sun outside to sign off on a VIP lanyard. Stopped home for 10 minutes, and then headed into the city for the concert.

I have to say I haven't ever been a huge Justin fan, and that's even faded more in recent years. Didn't really care for his last CD all that much. But he earned back some brownie points! He seemed so much more mature, relaxed, and down to earth. He didn’t baby talk and try to make things sexy and cool.

[> SexyBack Club Tour Review ----> -- Janelle, 00:47:02 08/25/06 Fri [1]

8/23/06 – Justin Timberlake SexyBack Club Tour @ House of Blues - Chicago, IL

Got to the House of Blues at 7:15 to…you guessed it!…stand in LINE!!! The VIP lanyards had a separate line. At 7:30 doors open and they let us in a few at a time to exchange our lanyard and wristband for hard tix. But, then we have to go back and get at the end of the paying people’s LINE! Got a spot in the middle of the floor. Not bad! A lot of Best Buy people were still stuck in traffic(the train was the way to go). Show was supposed to start at 9, but it didn’t until 9:45. So that was over 2 hours standing packed like sardines at HOB. With new found respect for Justin as a person, I was hoping his music would be equally as mature and impressive. I had seen his 1am post-concert House of Blues show a couple years prior, and his songs just work better in a club of guys and girls doing call and response. He and his 11-piece band/backup singers wore 3-piece suits or part of it. I haven’t listened to his first CD since shortly after I last saw him in concert, so the lyrics came flooding back as the crowd was singing along. “Cry Me a River” was first. “Like I Love You” meshed with “Smells Like Teen Spirit” to get the place rockin’ hard! I know that’s a similar arrangement to a couple years ago, but this one seemed harder…although I can’t really remember 2 years ago. Since this is intimate and 21+, he gets incredibly more sexual with his hand gestures and body language. However, I think he upped it another notch on “Rock Your Body,” which somehow was one of my top 2 fave performances of the night. He’s one dirty boy! He played acoustic guitar and took to the piano where he really seemed to be pretty comfortable. Again, really liked “Love Stoned” and the beat. He danced a minute here and there…nothing choreographed. All just real smooth freestyle. Very mature, musical show. He played some slower songs. My least favorite new song of the night was a soft ballad, “Until the End of Time.” My favorite new song in CONCERT was “What Goes Around!” Remember it was just "alright" at the listening party? Performed live, it is this amazing power ballad that builds with wonderful crowd sing-a-long. I read a Chicago Tribune review of the concert, and they said that song has the potential to be a concert closer. I'd definitely agree as that was the performance that stuck with me as I left! Sang a little Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams.” Encore song was “SexyBack.” Show was over at 11:15.
