8/23/06 – Justin Timberlake SexyBack Club Tour @ House of Blues - Chicago, IL

Got to the House of Blues at 7:15 to…you guessed it!…stand in LINE!!! The VIP lanyards had a separate line. At 7:30 doors open and they let us in a few at a time to exchange our lanyard and wristband for hard tix. But, then we have to go back and get at the end of the paying people’s LINE! Got a spot in the middle of the floor. Not bad! A lot of Best Buy people were still stuck in traffic(the train was the way to go). Show was supposed to start at 9, but it didn’t until 9:45. So that was over 2 hours standing packed like sardines at HOB. With new found respect for Justin as a person, I was hoping his music would be equally as mature and impressive. I had seen his 1am post-concert House of Blues show a couple years prior, and his songs just work better in a club of guys and girls doing call and response. He and his 11-piece band/backup singers wore 3-piece suits or part of it. I haven’t listened to his first CD since shortly after I last saw him in concert, so the lyrics came flooding back as the crowd was singing along. “Cry Me a River” was first. “Like I Love You” meshed with “Smells Like Teen Spirit” to get the place rockin’ hard! I know that’s a similar arrangement to a couple years ago, but this one seemed harder…although I can’t really remember 2 years ago. Since this is intimate and 21+, he gets incredibly more sexual with his hand gestures and body language. However, I think he upped it another notch on “Rock Your Body,” which somehow was one of my top 2 fave performances of the night. He’s one dirty boy! He played acoustic guitar and took to the piano where he really seemed to be pretty comfortable. Again, really liked “Love Stoned” and the beat. He danced a minute here and there…nothing choreographed. All just real smooth freestyle. Very mature, musical show. He played some slower songs. My least favorite new song of the night was a soft ballad, “Until the End of Time.” My favorite new song in CONCERT was “What Goes Around!” Remember it was just "alright" at the listening party? Performed live, it is this amazing power ballad that builds with wonderful crowd sing-a-long. I read a Chicago Tribune review of the concert, and they said that song has the potential to be a concert closer. I'd definitely agree as that was the performance that stuck with me as I left! Sang a little Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams.” Encore song was “SexyBack.” Show was over at 11:15.
