Charlie mentioned, in his post about the fire whistles and sleigh riding... the quarry. There was quite an industry tied to those quarries, although none of us were alive at the time they were active.

I grew up in the 50's on Marbledale Road, two blocks up from Crestwood station, and one of the three marble quarries was in the back yard of the houses across the street. Another was down Marbledale at Jackson Avenue and the third was past the end of Lamesa Drive.

As kids we were warned to stay away from the quarries. Sure they were dangerous, but we were more impressed with stories of large fish which could view a youngster as a tasty "snack". Other impressions were that the water in the quarries was hundreds of feet deep, that there were submerged vehicles and cranes, and perhaps, bodies.

A Google search on "Tuckahoe Marble" shows more than 2200 hits: http://www.google.com/#hl=en&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=%22Tuckahoe+Marble%22&btnG=Google+Search&fp=1

Tuckahoe Marble appears in many famous buildings, and the local Masons called their chapter the Marble Lodge.
