Peter disappointed with Miss Universe judging

By VERDEL BISHOP

Miss Universe franchise holder, Peter Elias, has expressed disappointment over this year’s Miss Universe pageant judging in Vietnam.

PETER SURPRISED: Peter Elias, Miss Universe franchise holder, says he is surprised by the outcome of the 2008 Miss Universe Pageant.

Elias told Newsday he felt confident that this country’s representative, Anya Ayoung-Chee should have been among the top five finalists and described the judging process as subjective.

“I wish Trinidad and Tobago could have seen Anya in Vietnam. After the pageant, Miss Venezeula and Miss Colombia also expressed their disappointment. They too, expected TT in the top five with them. They too, wanted to know what happened,” Elias said.

Elias added that in his 15 years of involvement with the pageant, this is the first time he has written to the organisation to try to determine what went wrong, however, he is still waiting on a response.

“I am disappointed because we gave our best; the entire team really worked hard. In our judgement and in the judgement and opinion of others while we were there, and based on the positive feedback, we felt confident that this country would have done well.

“Anya is very intelligent, vibrant and amazing. She worked really hard and was very prepared. She deserved it and I had high expectations because of her performance,” Elias said.

Elias said Ayoung-Chee will return to TT in a couple weeks, as she deserves a little time to breathe and to travel a bit.

Pre-pageant favourites included Miss Trinidad and Tobago Miss Venezuela, Miss Mexico, Miss Puerto Rico and Miss South Africa. However, the big award of Miss Universe 2008 went to Miss Venezuela Dayana Mendoza – dubbed as the girl with modern beauty, dynamic and confident characteristics. The One on the left is my choice for Miss Korea, I dont know her name nor which providence in Korea she won the pageant in. On the right is Ran Lee my choice for 1st Runner Up and on bottom the winner of the Miss Seoul contest as 2nd Runner up. All I can say is that the MKO better not screw it up this time.

A Venezuelan tabloid reports that Venezuela's rep to Miss World 2008 Hannelys Quintero is purposely disobeying her director Osmel Sousa. It seems that the two have a bad relationship with each other. She refuses to attend the training that Osmel has designed for her, she has not attended her classes on make-up, hairstyling, communication improvement and good manners. She even cut her hair without permission and she's going to Miss World in the Ukraine not to win but to have a vacation. During the casting of Miss Venezuela 2008, Osmel ordered Hannelys to sit at the other end of the table because he didn't want to be near her. Osmel is so irritated with Hannelys that he is discussing with Miss World chairwoman Julia Morley about the possibility of sending instead the winner of Miss World Venezuela 2009 and to dethrone Quintero.

Beauty with a bit of nip & tuck?
A 'don't ask, don't tell' policy on plastic surgery surrounds local pageants
By Ho Lian-Yi

July 21, 2008

MAYBE she was born with it, or maybe she paid for it - that's the usual cattiness after every Miss Universe pageant.

This time, Latina gossip site Guanabee claims, with photographic comparisons, that the last three Miss Universe winners had plastic surgery, including the present winner, Venezuela's Dayana Mendoza.

'So while they don't officially endorse it, they manage to reward it every year with the crown,' it alleged, referring to the pageant organiser.

Guanabee's claims:

Stunning: Miss Universe 2006 Zuleyka Rivera crowning Miss Japan Riyo Mori during the competition last year. Miss Venezuela Dayana Mendoza won the crown this year. A website claims that they had work done to enhance their beauty.

Miss Universe 2008 Dayana Mendoza of Venezuela did her nose.

Miss Universe 2007 Riyo Mori of Japan rounded out her eyes in addition to her admitted 'lip work'. (However, the website's pictures were shown to be not actually hers.)

Miss Universe 2006 Zuleyka Rivera of Puerto Rico 'looks like Michael Jackson'.

But is it fair for contestants who had plastic surgery to compete in the beauty contests in the first place? And wouldn't it put countries without as much of a 'plastic culture', at a disadvantage at such contests?

Ms Teo Ser Lee, who was Miss Singapore International 1986 and Miss Singapore World 1988, said she had been to five international pageants and she found a lot of the South Americans had near-perfect bodies.

She claims she also knew a plastic surgeon who specialised in 'sculpting' these bodies.

But is it unfair? She doesn't think so.

'Come on, if you have the kind of experts and you have the money, just do it,' she said.

But Ms Teo, who trains beauty pageant contestants, tells them to think carefully about the risks of the surgery going wrong or not meeting their expectations.

Mr Daryl Pang of Derrol Steppeny Promotions, which organises Miss Singapore Universe, said the pageant has no rule against plastic surgery. 'If someone did it years ago, I wouldn't know anyway,' he said.

In Singapore, the pageant circuit appears to have a 'don't ask, don't tell' policy towards plastic surgery.

It is kept quiet, several sources said. It is not encouraged or common, but it is left to the contestant to decide what she wants.

To Ms Jackeline Carter, director of iGlamour and creator of the Sweetheart Pageants, the accusations of plastic surgery in the Miss Universe pageant doesn't come as a surprise.

To have a chance of getting in the top five of Miss Universe, you have to be near-perfect. 'And no one is born perfect,' she reasoned.

But she doesn't think many local beauty contestants go for plastic surgery. 'If our girls go through much of that they would be much more beautiful,' she said with a laugh.

Ms Cheryl Hansen, managing director of C T Hansen International, organiser of Miss Earth Singapore, said: 'I'm not quite certain what goes on behind the scenes at Miss Universe or other pageants, but what I know is that with Miss Earth - you cannot win with superficial beauty alone.'

Student Serene Wong, 19, the reigning Miss Singapore Sweetheart, said she can understand why people would go under the knife.

'In pageants, confidence plays a big role,' she said.

INNER BEAUTY

However, she said that if she had won because she had plastic surgery done, she would feel guilty about it.

She said: 'You won't be a good role model... You would actually encourage more girls to go for plastic surgery and they won't respect true beauty any more.'

Mrs Colleen Francisca-Maison, 26, multiple pageant-winner and the runner-up at Mrs World 2008, said she felt plastic surgery won't give any contestant an advantage over another.

Personally, she has no problem with plastic surgery as long as the person knows when to stop.

Sometimes girls get it not to fix something outside, but something 'inside'. That's when they get addicted, thinking the next nip/tuck will be the one that makes them feel good about themselves. 'But it never does,' she said.

Miss Nuraliza Osman, 31, the lawyer who won Miss Singapore Universe in 2002, said she is completely against plastic surgery.

She didn't know of anyone who went under the knife when she competed.

And, according to her, beauty contests aren't just about pretty faces and bodies.

'You also need charisma - and you can't buy that from a surgeon's office,' she said.

in Hind sight: Best flesh in the universe

Why do so many ugly women get crowned Miss Universe? It’s because these days importance is given to the contestants’ brains.

In the final round of the contest, the winner must answer questions of ‘public interest’ put by scholarly judges, who seem more hopeful that she’ll spread World Peace than her gams.

It’s hard to believe the audience are on the edge of their seats thinking, “Will she spread public awareness of AIDS and other diseases? Or won’t she?” Ideally she should be so attractive that they’d be muttering, “I wouldn’t mind getting it from her!”

Unfortunately those days of uprightness and balance are over. We have clumsy contestants tripping and falling in their evening gown during that part of the programme, which too should probably be eliminated and the swimsuit competition alone should count.

What are they trying to prove? That women have intelligence? Otherwise how do you explain that they never ask Mister Universe candidates such questions?
After the contest the winner is sent on a world tour where people listen to her grave pronouncements and nod their heads either in agreement, or in time with her bouncing breadfruits.

Some believe the Miss Universe contest is degrading to women. In 2007 Miss Sweden reached this conclusion two days before the finals, and dropped out. This year that country didn’t send a contestant either. However, prostitution is legal for women there.

In 2000 Miss India, Lara Dutta, passionately defended the pageant as promoting the uplift of women. Guess what happened? She not only won but achieved the highest-ever score in any category of the contest.

This year’s pageant was held in Vietnam. Before the swimsuit and evening gown sections there had been an ao dai competition. Now this has nothing to do with former contests or conflicts where rivals cried “Ow!” or “Die!” to each other depending on their end of the gun barrel. Today ‘World Peace’ has reached even Vietnam, which is a safer country experiencing the joy of doi moi. It has one of Asia’s most open economies.

If China is using next month’s Olympics to showcase itself, the Vietnamese also displayed their assets. Previously the communist government was disinclined to promote the ao dai, which is their national women’s dress (for men it’s the ao gam ~ to which my earlier comment about gams doesn’t apply). It’s a long silk top with trousers; and though not yet as open as the economy, it has been getting tighter in recent times. Breasts and curves are emphasized. It’s said that ‘the ao dai covers everything but hides nothing’. Moreover, nowadays some scoop necklines are falling faster than Miss USA did in her gown.

According to the authorities, apart from national dress there’s national progress and free press: and they’ll oppress those who deny it. The truth is that they still detain dissidents and restrict everything from the Press to religious freedom.

So is all this sexy stuff good for the traditionally totalitarian country? According to Aldous Huxley, ‘as political and economic freedom diminishes, sexual freedom tends compensatingly to increase’. But his contemporary anti-absolutist George Orwell considered sex to be an act of rebellion when people were supposed to love only the party in power. Who’s right? It’s a tough one: they should put it to the brainy babes in bikinis.

Hello my precious boys and girls,

Aunty Irene is back and has some comments.

I find that some people here are so amusing, hypocrite and beyond description. Prior to Miss Universe 2008, almost everyone here is rooting for our precious Dayana to win. Now that she has won, and instead of celebrating my country’s victory, everyone is going against her.

The artistic pics she did for some advertising campaign is not the same as porn/nudity as some claimed them to be. If some supermodels were to pose such artistic shots, does it qualify them to be porn star? Then please tell that to Marcus Schenkenberg who did the Versace ad that he’s a male porn star and also to those models who posed “naked” for PETA. Please differentiate them.

Please be realistic! The best girl has won Miss Universe 2008, and nothing will change that. So accept that fact. Dayana was among the best that night and she happened to win. Colombia was equally look but she almost forgot her question after she greeted the audience in the Vietnamese language. So watch it. Dayana was focused and she aced the interview. Dominican Republic was good but came across as too stiff. Russia… no comments. Mexico’s gown ruined her plus the fact that she didn’t even shined. She was lucky that she made the Top 5. I would accept Kosovo ANYTIME!

XOXO

from www.beautyinpageants.blogspot.com

1. PUERTO RICO - She's no doubt the most hyped unplaced Miss Universe 2008 candidate. Right after her national pageant, she stole the limelight by accusing fellow candidates of spraying pepper in her evening gown and to her make up which made her face swollen during the final part of the pageant. She was in the pages of newspapers side by side with the owner of the Miss Universe, Donald Trump. In a Puerto Rican discussion board, her fans were busy praising every little details about her gown to her hairstyle. Her fans were busy as well bashing and trashing other candidates in an effort to lift Ingrid Rivera. But the tactics did not work this time for this 2005 Miss World Second Runner-Up. She did not deserve the hype.

2. INDIA - Because of the sash factor (India became a beauty superpower only in the nineties); her seemingly rehearsed and pageant patty interview; and her inclusion in the Top Ten Best in National Costume chosen by Vietnamese judges, she was in everybody's list, including me. A newspaper even reported in her country that she won the National Costume award even before the announcement of the real winner. Too bad, she had a very poor swimsuit and evening gown presentations. She did not also deserve the hype.

3. IRELAND - The amount of hyping on Miss Ireland is no match on the hypes on both Puerto Rico and India. Ireland was hardly noticed by the press covering the pageant but she did impress the eyes of all the beauty afficionados all over the world as manifested by almost all discussion boards on beauty pageants. She showed an impressive performance during the preliminary but she failed to break in to the Top 15. She deserved the hype, she should has been a finalist.

4. BRAZIL - She is not the prettiest face her country usually send to any international pageant. She's an ordinary Brazilian if you're in her country. In fact, the pageant went through without much media attention on her. But there was an effort by a number of Brazilian based websites and discussion boards in Latin America to help her get media mileage. In an effort to hype her, an article was quoted saying Miss Brazil made the biggest surprise at the preliminary. Indeed, she was a surprise at the Final night for not placing on the Top 15. The hype was not picked up. She definitely did not deserve the hype.

5. THAILAND - The inclusion of Thailand in the Top 15 or 20 for the last two years (Thanks to Singha beer for being a sponsor of the pageant) helped this year's Thai representative get enough media attention. Like Puerto Rico, she was in everybody's list. Her fans emulated also the tactics of most of the Latin Americans of bashing other candidates in an attempt to make their candidate looks the best or superior in the pageant. She did not make it. She deserved it without a doubt.

Below is the list of the most hyped Miss Universe 2008 candidates who penetrated the Top 15:

1. VENEZUELA - The sash factor worked on Dayana Mendoza, a priviledge Venezuela has been enjoying since the eighties. Half of the world's beauty pageant fanatics predicted her as the winner. She was given favouritism during the pageant especially during a parade that required half of the candidates to wear the Vietnamese tradidtional dress, the Ao Dai. Dayana was the priority of the press covering the event for interviews and picture takings. Afterall, she deserved it.

2. COLOMBIA - Talia Vargas ahs been in every pages of all beauty pageant forums. Her fans did well with their hyping. But, all in all, Miss Colombia did a very strong preliminary performance. She had the best gown in the pageant and I really love it. She carried the gown very well. Too bad, she did not win but she deserved all the efforts to hype her.

3. JAPAN - Having a national director who has a very popular blog discussing about her, Hiroko Mima was indeed overhyped by Ines Ligron and her followers unintentionally. Ines is such a good person and she did it in good faith, I still believe. There is no doubt that Miss Japan deserved her placement on the finals but the hyping on her just went overboard.

4. KOSOVO - How many times you've seen a Miss Kosovo at teh Miss Universe? Only this year. That idea made her the apple of the eyes of all the beauty pageant fanatics. Aside from that fact, she is no doubt one of the prettiest faces in the competition. Her look is unconventional and she has resemblance to Angelina Jolie, a popular Hollywood actress. Well, she deserved the hype.

5. AUSTRALIA - Her resemblance to her fellow Australian Miss Universe 2004 Jennifer Hawkins made Miss Australia a top favourite to win the crown. She was indeed a favourite topic in all forums. Though she did not display outstanding preliminary performances, she made it to Top 15. I can say, she deserve the hype afterall.

To complete my TOP 15 MOST HYPED 2008 Miss Universe candidates, I am including in my list the countries of Mexico, Panama, Peru, Kazakhstan, Norway and Trinidad and Tobago.

Based also on my observation, the people of Latin America and the Caribbean especially Brazil, Mexico and Puerto Rico tend to overhype their representatives. They are prolly beauty fanatics in its true meaning as vindicated by their performances year after year.

another from www.beautyinpageants.blogspot.com

WARNING: What you will be reading is just relayed to me by a Vietnamese who was in Vietnam during the pageant. Most of these are second hand informations she heard from the people who followed the Miss Universe activities in less than a month.

Some informations were also gathered and collected from different blogs and accounts from the people behind the pageant.

These are may be true or not. These are maybe urban legend or just hearsays. Take in mind that I can't verify these matters. I just would like these "news" in my blog. You can refute it anytime you want. You are free.

We have heard stories of candidates to any international pageants acting bitchy to other contestants or the press. This is no longer an unusual knowledge for most of us who are beauty fanatics. I guess you also have your own stories to tell, stories you have read from the web. But this time I will tell you something about the just-concluded pageant in Vietnam.

I am giving you some of the "BITCHES" candidates of Miss Universe 2008.

Who could forget the incidents involving Miss Egypt Yara Naoum? The incident was popularised by the blog of Ines Ligron, the national director of Japan. Ligron blogged out that Miss Egypt slapped the then Miss Universe Riyo Mori on backstage while they were rehearsing for the pageant. Not only that, Miss Canada was allegedly fed up with Yara's inconsideration of smoking heavily in the room without minding the presence of the Canadian beauty.

Next to Egypt is India's Simran Kaur Mundi. She often acted prima donna and believed much in herself. She was acting like she was the winner while the pageant was not yet over. The report in an Indian newspaper that she won the National Costume was rumoured to be came from Simran. When she was not called as a finalist, she belittled the pageant and was allegedly qouted for saying the pageant is no class.

Dominican Republic's Marianne Cruz Gonzales was said to be hard headed. During rehearsals, she was seen - as per the talks are concerned - acting stubbornly and ignoring the some of the officials' and choreographers' instructions.

Another suprise is Norway's Mariann Birkedal. She was very vocal about her tantrums. She was said to have lost her patience about the long hours of activities. All she wanted that time was to go home and leave the pageant at once.

Another candidates who were said to be bitches were Korea's Sun Lee, Thailand's Gavindra Pothijak and Philippine's Jennifer Barrientos.

It is very hard to believe these gossips especially Misses Norway, the Philippines, Korea and Dominican Republic. But they say " there's no smoke if there's no fire". Whatever it is, these may be true or just a work of a wild imagination.
